LO1
Differentiate between the role of a leader and the function of a manager.
P1 Define and compare the different roles and characteristics of a leader and a manager.
Definition
Leader: The person who guides and leads a group of employees in order to achieve a selected goal of
the organization is called as leader. The medium of interpersonal communication or group
communication is mostly use to run this process. It is not necessary that it always need to be a group of
employees it can even be just a person.
Manager: The definition of manager refers to a process in particular which states that a man is
managing a group of people through different process, in order to achieve the common goal of the
business organisation. The position of the manager includes different functions such as organising,
planning, motivating the employees and decision-making (Allen et al.,2017).
Characteristics
Leader: A responsible leader should have various characteristics in order to run his business. In order
to give solutions to the business problems, research of the market and identify the areas of development.
An immediate attention in the sector those are collaboration with the needed companies, intact
communication, time management, team management, diplomacy in between the employees, guiding
and directing the employees.
Manager: A manager has the characteristics like relevant skills of analysing the business skills, the
critical thoughts and situations of the organisation. The manager needs to strategise that, is proper
planning of the business, development of the business, identification of the interest and the preferred

employees in order to achieve a selected goal of the

Inc and it has been seen that, the strategies applied for
the organization has given fruitful result in domestic as
well as in the international market.
of analysing the business skills, the critical thoughts
and situations of the organisation.
The medium of interpersonal communication or group
communication is mostly used to run this process.
Moreover, the managers of the Apple Inc, has come
out with in innovative strategies based on which they
can implement the ideas provided by Steve Jobs.
The manager can just serve a notice or a mail to let the
information reach to the employees. This strategy is
followed in the Apple Inc, in order to maintain
sustainability in the organization.
In the case of leadership one need to gain the trust of
the people, they are working with.
The manager is way more about the matter of
controlling, if the decision is accepted by the majority
of the organization agrees to a decision of
management, then the individual complaints do not
matter that much
A leader who has the relevant skills to run their team
will always guide and motivate their employees in
order to get the work done. The time management
skills, the visionary approach and the innovative IT
skills of Steve Jobs has been suitable for the company.
On the other hand, the managers look for the short
range of vision in the business (Bolden, 2016).
Managers of the Apple Inc, has managed to provide all
their efforts to motivate the employees and the reuse
the materials to cut down the production cost.
M1 Analyze and differentiate between the role of a leader and function of a manager by effectively
applying a range of theories and concepts.
Two types of leadership are applicable for the role of a leader and manager effectively in an organization, those
are Auto-critic leadership and another is transformational leadership.
Auto-critic leadership: In this kind of leadership, the management and the leader get to have the power to take
more of the decisions, the employees do not have that huge kind of involvement in that. The leader of the Apple
applied this kind of leadership for many times to achieve the targeted goal of Apple.
Transformational leadership: This type of leadership style states that the employees of the business
organization do have the freedom of decision suggesting to the organization, and there are certain cases where

the organization even take the opinion of the employees. Steve Jobs used to think that this kind of freedom of
the employees is needed for the organization; this is why he applied this leadership to the organization as well.
D1 Critically examine the scope, development and growth of entrepreneurial ventures.
The scope and development of the entrepreneurial venture do have a scope to growth. in order to give the
business a new hike, research of the market and identify the areas of development. An immediate attention in
the sector those are collaboration with the needed companies, intact communication, time management, team
management, diplomacy in between the employees, guiding and directing them properly (Bolman and Deal,
2014).
LO2
Apply the role of a leader and the function of manager in given contexts.
P2 Examine examples of how the role of a leader and the function of a manager apply in different
situational contexts
The leader and the manager of an organization do have the capability to take the organization into a desired
direction of the goal. There are few of the theories, which help the organization to deal with the situational
contexts. Those are described below.
The theory of contingency of Fiedler
The theory of contingency of Fiedler, it states that different situational aspects demand different type of
leadership that is even applicable to the managers. Fiedler looked at under three basic elements. Those
elements are the structure of the task, the relation with the leaders; the power is positioned towards the needed
person properly or not. First of all there are a lot of situational context occurs because of the structure of the
task, if the task is properly structured then there is no point of problems, other than the employee relation
depends on the factor of environment of the work place. The brand Apple takes care of all this factors.
Hersey-Blanchard’s situational model
Hersey-Blanchard’s situational model depends upon the behavior of the task, relationship behavior and
maturity. There are different types of duties divided to each of the employees or sometimes in individual
groups. The task behavior includes different kind of things, which says what to do, how to do, when to do,
through which way to do, and the leader gets to be engaged in particularly one-way communication. In the
segment of the relationship behavior the communication becomes a two way process, because both the leader
and the employee is taking part in this conversation and the work is done in a smooth way. Maturity states that,

when the employees themselves be responsible for the kind of work they are doing. This happens mostly when
the employees finish working in a organization for a long time (Burgoyne et al., 2014).
House’s path goal theory
House’s path goal theory states about different things such as it is highly oriented to achievement, directive,
supportive towards the employees, they can even take part in this, another thing which is included in this that is
the environment and the followers. It is very important to encourage the employees of the organization, to set a
standard goal in front of their eyes. After the permanent settlement of the goal they leader have to be directive
towards the organization. The fact that each of the employees should take part in the work and then supporting
the employees is one of the greatest things, in this way the work can be done in a better way possible. This
entire process can help the organization (Apple) to have good work environment and help to get new followers
(Montgomery, 2012).
M2 Assess the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to situations within the work
environment.
Weakness: Hersey-Blanchard’s situational model stats that the task behavior includes different kind of things,
which says what to do, how to do, when to do, through which way to do, and the leader gets to be engaged in
particularly one-way communication. The theory of contingency of Fiedler if the task is properly structured
then there is no point of problems, but if it is not then there is a probability of problem.
Strength: Those elements are the structure of the task, the relation with the leaders; the power is positioned
towards the needed person properly or not, is the major strength of the theory of contingency of Fiedler.
House’s path goal theory states about different things such as it is highly oriented to achievement, directive,
supportive towards the employees, they can even take part in this, another thing which is included in this that is
the environment and the followers (Certo, 2018).
D1 Critically examine the scope, development and growth of entrepreneurial ventures.
The scope and development of the entrepreneurial venture do have a scope to growth. In order to give the
business a new hike, research of the market and identify the areas of development. The task behavior includes
different kind of things, which says what to do, how to do, when to do, through which way to do, and the leader
gets to be engaged in particularly one-way communication. In the segment of the relationship behavior the
communication becomes a two way process, because both the leader and the employee is taking part in this
conversation and the work is done in a smooth way. It has the ability to bring the entrepreneurial venture.

P3: Apply different theories and models of approach, including situational leadership, systems
leadership and contingency
Leadership can be defined as the quality of an individual where he or she has the ability to lead and guide. A
leader is one who has an optimistic and positive approach towards critical situations. A leader is also a source
of inspiration and motivation to the team members and employees (Krajewski et al., 2015).
There are various models and styles of leadership that can be evaluated and the models implemented and
followed by Apple are as follows:
Transactional leadership methodology is one of the few styles followed by Apple. In a transactional leadership
approach, the management presents a direct interactive structure on how the process is to be done. Here, the
management provides a blue print of the work and target that needs to be completed in a given span of time.
The idea of promotion, incentive and bonuses are introduced so that the employees of Apple can build a
competitive spirit so that the efficiency of the work increases. In a transactional leadership scheme, the idea is
transaction of effective work in return of incentives and promotions. It has been observed in case of Apple that
there has been a huge rise in the functioning and processes of the business after adoption of the transactional
scheme. Situational leadership scheme is a part of contingency scheme, which states that the leaders and
management of the organization introduces strategies and ideas that depend on the situation or state of the task.
Another model of leadership approach that Apple has incorporated in its system is the transformational
leadership scheme. Late Steve Jobs had incorporated the transformational style of leadership in the
organization. In a transformational organization, there is a translucent mode of communication among the
management and the employees. In this model the management and the concerned leaders aim to motivate and
support the team which leads to a better work environment and a efficient business output.
Autocratic leadership style is another model that the organization has adopted. However, this type of strategy is
appreciated in certain situations. In an autocratic leadership scheme the primary authority is in the hands of the
leaders and the management department. In this type of model, the members of the team have little or no
authority or function in the process of decision-making. The structure and decision is presented by the higher
authorities, in this kind of strategy the organization strictly sticks to the general rules and regulations and there
is no window for external suggestions and strategies (Heizer 2016).
M2: Assess the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to situations within the work
environment.
In an organization there is a huge section that is determined by the management and the leadership because it
the duty and function of the leaders and the management wing to focus and determine the business policies and

scenarios. The leader provides assistance and support to the team members and employees of an organization.
However, there are certain situations that may arise where the leadership and the management plays a key role.
The different models and strategies that Apple has implemented have its own strengths and weakness.
Model of leadership Strength Weakness
Transactional leadership
scheme
In a transactional scheme of
leadership, the most important
factor is the increased efficiency
in the processes. In this scheme,
there is an idea of motivation in
the members because the
management provides a structured
target or goal and provides
incentives and promotions for the
employees (Smith et al., 2014).
An organization works on
commitment and creativity.
However, this kind of leadership
does not appreciate out of the box
ideas and creativity of the
employees.
Transformational leadership
scheme
In a transformational leadership
scheme there is a transparent
medium of communication among
the management and the members
and employees along with this
there is enthusiasm in the system.
In a transformational scheme of
leadership, the most necessary
parameter that reduces its
application is the huge difference
between the estimated structure
and the realistic figures. In this
type of leadership, there is
negligence from the authority in
case of details.
D1: Critically examine the scope, development and growth of entrepreneurial ventures
There has been a huge boom in terms if business growth and development for Apple after the organization has
installed certain changes in the management scheme. The founders of the organization Steve Jobs, Steve
Wozniak and Ron Wayne had implemented the transformational leadership theory. The theory suggests that
there needs to a translucent medium of communication among the executives, the management and the
employees. With the implementation of the transformational leadership theory there was a exponential increase

in fresh ideas and strategies that were suggested by the employees. In the initial phase, Apple needed to
incorporate new and fresh ideas in the organization, which helped increase the efficiency of the business. With
change in time, there were certain changes in the system and transactional scheme of leadership was introduced
which resulted in an exponential increase in the business revenue because there was an increased spirit of
competition and efficiency in the work setting (Antonakis and Day, 2017).

Demonstrate an appreciation of the role leaders and managers play in the operations function of an
organization.
P4 Explain the key approaches to operations management and the role that leaders and managers play.
Operations management can be defined as the process of presenting a structure, planning and implementing new
ideas and strategies, and providing necessary changes and improvements necessary for maximum business
output. Apple has incorporated certain theories in the system in order to have maximum output.
In this context, there will be discussion about the role of the renowned leader Steve Jobs for the Apple
organization. Before going to further discussion, there will be discussion about the biography of Steve Jobs. He
was born in 1955 in San Francisco completed his study in Wisconsin University. His innovative idea of
launching Apple Computer was a grand success in the country. After passing out from college, he started co-
founding Apple with Steve Wozniak in 1976. In the year 1985, he left his job founding Pixer Animation studios
and after a few decades, he returned to Apple. After this, he does not to bother about anything else to be a
successful entrepreneur. In 2011, his net worth reached almost US$ 6.5 billion by selling of Pixar to Walt
Disney. While Steve jobs left, the company after a decade past his net worth touched almost $36 billion. Since
2010, Time magazine has recorded Steve Jobs name as among the 100 wealthiest and most influential people in
the world. Steve Jobs was ranked 10th on the Forbes list of World’s most powerful people. Steve Jobs was
aligned with the Auto-critic leadership approach based on which, the issues and the further improvement of the
Apple platform can be done. Hence, in this context, there will be discussion about the factors of the
revolutionary factors via the IT and the technological platforms. The several areas where the leader and the
manager need to play the most vital part are as follows:
Theories of operations and operations management:
Six sigma Theory: The primary idea of this theory is to present a flawless output in terms of business. This
methodology mainly focuses on removing any kind of error and issues (McCleskey 2014).
Lean production: The main principle of this kind of theory is to implement ideas for maximum output and
minimum wastage. This aim can be achieved by empowering the employees and present a structure to meet the
needs of the customers.
Queuing theory: Queuing theory is defined as the type of operations management where the focus is on the
productivity of staffs and workers and improvement in interactions with customers.

There are certain approaches towards operations management. Certain operations management
approaches are:
Total Quality Management (TQM): There are certain set of principles, which determines the Total Quality
Management approach. TQM focuses on regular improvement in the business processes. The key principles
includes primary focal point needs to be the customers, there needs to be maximum input from the employees
and the workers, there needs to be a firm structure explaining the functioning of the system (Dale 2015).
Just-in-Time Inventory and the concept of continuous improvement (Kaizen): The main principle of this kind of
approach is manufacturing the products keeping in mind the level of demand in a particular scenario. Just in
time approach towards management is necessary to minimize wastage and produce necessary and required
materials.
Role that leaders and managers Operational functions:
For any function of management and operations, the management department and the leaders have a huge role
to play.
Control and Distribution System: For operations management it necessary to present a structure determining the
process of manufacturing and distribution of the products and here the management and the leaders are
necessary factors in order to deliver the final products.
In case of transforming raw material into finished goods, the management has the responsibility to look into the
matter of labor and efficiency of the workers and the employees.
P5 Explain the importance and value of operations management in achieving business objectives.
For any organization to run there needs to be equal contribution of all the departments. Operations management
is the department of an organization, which deals with presenting a structure, proving a compact plan and also
deals with the management and control of certain functions. For a specific business output operations
management is necessary (Wang and Cruz 2018).
In case of Apple’s operations, management department is one of the principle functioning units of the system.
The necessity of the operations management department is determined by the final business output especially
the concerned products. There are several departments in the Apple to control the individual task. Therefore, it
can be suggested that, to accomplish the ideas of the leader the several department of the organization need to
work properly to complete the given task within the allocated time with proper care. The foremost duty is to
fulfill the issues faced by the users and to incorporate all the essential technical features in the social media
platform. However, the Auto-critic approach is helpful to incorporate the future development of the IT and
technological platform for the company and to solve the challenges faced by the managers and the customer of
the organization. The operation management department of the organization need to be efficient enough in order
14
Document Page
to adopt the suitable strategies based on which the desired target can be achieved in the social media platform.
For the other departments to function without hindrance the operations department needs to be active. As the
operations department works on planning and presenting the structure on the processes and functions, all the
other wings are dependent on the operations department. For the department of finance the operations
department presents the estimated structure the organization might address. In the functioning of the human
resource department the operations management team works on the type and description off the jobs and the
factors affecting employment relations. If there is a low work efficiency of the operations department then the
accounting and the finance department will not be able to estimate costs and processes and this will affect the
business output.
M3 Evaluate how leaders and managers can improve efficiencies of operational management to
successfully meet business objectives.
In a business, the operational management department has a lot of functions to perform and the leaders and
management of the organization plays an important role. A better management system if incorporated in the
operations department then the functioning of the task becomes much more efficient.
A firm leadership in the field of operations is necessary for a better control and distribution of the products that
have been manufactured. In case of logistics and development, a leader looks into the matter of quality check of
the products and proper distribution in the concerned areas. It is also the duty of the leader and the management
department to maintain and control the amount of labor needed for a particular task, it is the management,
which determines the necessity of labor and a healthy relationship with the workers (R Răducan and R Răducan
2014).
D2 critically evaluate application of operations management and factors that impact on the wider
business environment.
The applications of operations management include functions the determine the output and revenue of the
business. The main function of the operations management team is to present ideas and strategies that the
organization needs to incorporate in order to have a proper functioning of business. The operations department
provides plans and structures that determine the process of the departments (Heizer 2016).
However, there are certain factors that affect the functioning of the business:
The impact of the environmental factors on business functions.
The fluctuation in the economy leads to severe structural changes in the functioning and policies of the
organization.
In certain scenarios, the social environment often determines certain policy changes in the organization.
15

Due to certain technological changes in the market there needs to be an improvement in the structure of
the system.
LO4
Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between leadership and management in a
Contemporary business environment.
P6 Assess the factors within the business environment that impact upon operational management and
Decision-making by leaders and managers.
The managers of an organization play a vital role to take essential decisions for the improvement of the
business. The decision making process of an organization depends on the leadership qualities of the managers
and leaders of the organization. Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple designed a plan to run the organization
effectively and successfully. The main aim of Steve Jobs was to keep the management simple and flexible to
build a healthy environment in the work place. The organization prefers small team to run the business because
small team is useful to maintain the relationship among the workers. In this organization, teams about 100
people under a team leader are preferred. Smaller team is essential to maintain the quality of works because the
team leader is able to communicate with every team member. To maintain the flexible work environment, the
managers perform some activities in the organization. The managers of the Apple always communicate with the
team members to take an effective decision for the benefit of the organization. The managers of this
organization are honest, reliable, innovative and creative, so that the employees abide the decisions of the
managers. On the other hand, the managers always encourage the workers to work efficiently (AbouAssi et al.,
2017).
There are various factors that affect the operational management and decision-making process in the
organization. Sometimes, the uncertainty of the managers affects the decision making process of the
organization. On the other hand, the managers are not able to develop probable alternatives for the business of
the organization. The managers and the leader of the organization need to be properly communicated in order to
incorporate all the necessary planning for the betterment of the organization. Therefore, Apple arranges proper
training to make efficient managers for the organization. The organization conducts practical training program
to provide them proper knowledge about the leadership activities. During training, different problems are given
to the managers to solve them. By all this approaches the leader of the organization has managed to lead, the
organization further in the market at the same time has managed to incorporate all the innovative technological

changes in the social media platforms. Apart from this, the valuable suggestion from the users of the social
media platform is being helpful for improving the condition of Apple as communication media. Therefore, the
managers are able to solve all the problems in the work place. The organization always provides support, which
help the managers to take proper decision. On the other hand, the employees trust the managers, so that the
managers easily take decision for the overall operation of the organization. Besides, Apple appoints managers in
different stages such as market leader, store leader and manager to operate the business efficiently. The
managers of Apple are able to define the problems, so that they can easily solve the difficulties that the
organization face to operate the business. The senior Vice President of Apple maintains the standard of the
organization to hold the reputation of the organization. Apple has a holistic approach to ensure the quality,
which helps to take right decision for the operation management. On the other hand, the organization provides
Code of Conduct to use their human resource management. The decision making process of the managers
depends on the behaviour of the employees. Therefore, the managers of Apple discuss with the employees to
take proper decision for the business (Bernardino, 2017).
Social responsibility of Apple
Social responsibilities refer to an ethical framework that has obligation in order to act for social benefits at
large. Social responsibility is considered as the specific responsibility or duty that needs to maintain by an
individual or by an organization for balancing between ecosystems and economy. All the business organizations
have different duties to balance these factors (Kim et al., 2017). Apple is one of the leading business
organizations across the globe. Thus the company has to maintain various social responsibilities for maintaining
their brand image and revenue in the market. As per the market researchers, Apple has implemented several
polices and changes within the firm to commit highest level of social responsibilities. The company has
announced that the suppliers of the company provide a safe working environment as well as the entire
employees are treated with respect and dignity. On the other hand, the company has taken some changes to
allow environmental responsibility within the firm.
Environmental responsibility of Apple
In order to keep our environment fresh as well as pollution free, it has become very essential to uphold
environmental responsibilities properly. Every organization is responsible for increasing environmental
pollution as the entire business firms produce several harmful gasses and elements that affects the environment
and allows pollution. Apple has implemented several changes within the organization to influence
environmental responsibilities. The company is using renewable energy sources across the firm to reduce down
the pollution. In addition, the company is taking adequate steps to cut off the carbon footprint problem by
lowering emissions within the firm. Carbon footprint is one of the biggest problems that are affecting our
natural environment at a large. The companyy is discussing to use environment friendly materials in their
17

products to decrease the rate of pollution within the organization (Charter, 2017). Additionally, the company is
working on a new approach that is a durable device is considered as a greener device. While it is possible to use
products longer, then fewer resources are needed to be extracted from the environment for making the new
ones. Keeping this on mind, the company is focusing on more hardy products that can be used for a long time.
Through this way, the company also allows lower pollution within the firm.
Importance of stakeholders in Apple
Stakeholders have their great contribution in enhancing the overall performance of the firm. Keeping this on
mind, Apple has always tried to require the needs of the stakeholders. Lenders, software developers, Apple
employees, customers, investors are the stakeholders of Apple. The success of Apple partially influenced by the
stakeholders those play a crucial role in increasing the physical as well as financial condition of the firm. In
addition, the stakeholders have the ability of affecting business organization in the terms of sales revenues and
customer perception (Cai et al., 2016). Apple has the high performance in addressing social responsibilities
through satisfying the stakeholder’s interests. Apple needs these all stakeholders to continue the flow of
company’s success. In addition, stakeholders are essential to address the different critical issues that can affect
the business firm.
M4 Analyze how these different factors affect the business environment and wider community.
The different factors of the organization affect the environment of business. The managers of the Apple are
conscious about the employees, so that they give emphasis on the opinions and ideas of the employees to take
final decision for the organization. On the other hand, managers of Apple are well organised to control the
employees and as well as the organization. Under the leadership of Tim Cook, Apple has conducted some
changes in the organizational operation system. The present CEO of Apple is more autocratic, so that the
employees face some problems in the work place. The managers are not able to motivate the employees and as a
result the work place environment is spoilt. Therefore, the factors have changed, so that the business
environment faces a huge change. The managers of Apple are now uncertain, so that they are not able to control
the team effectively. On the other hand, the quality of the managers is decreasing day by day, for this reason the
organization lacks to take innovative decision for the organization. The autocratic quality of the managers
damages the work environment of the organization. In recent times, the managers do not communicate with the
team members to take right decision (Jaques, 2017).

D2 critically evaluate application of operations management and factors that impact on the wider
business environment.
The managers of a organization play a crucial role to operate the overall business environment. The operation
management team takes various effective decisions to improve the business of the organization. The operation
management team has the abilities to identify the requirements of the organization. After analyzing the
requirements, the operation management team is able to fulfil the requirements using their skills. On the other
hand, the overall business process is well structured by the help of operation management team. The managers
focus on the structure of the organization and they design plan according to the business structure. Coordination
is necessary between managers and employees to build a healthy work place environment in the organization.
The innovative and creative skills of the managers are the key factors to run an organization effectively (Paam
et al., 2018).
In recent times, Apple faces various problems to build a healthy relationship in the work place because of
autocratic nature of the leaders. Therefore, it is necessary to change the behaviour of the leaders to maintain a
healthy atmosphere in the work place. The managers should be conscious about their responsibilities to control
and guide the team leaders. On the other hand, the management should develop their patience to communicate
with the team members. Apple provides IT based products, so that modern technology is essential to run the
business. Therefore, the managers need to develop their technical skills to improve the business. Besides, the
managers should implement problem-solving skills to solve all the difficulties in the organization. The most
necessary component of operation management is clear communication, which helps the mangers to perform
their duties effectively.
Conclusion:
This report states that the brand Apple generates one of the largest revenues in the market of smart phones.
However, it is considered as one of the niche brand that has a reach across the globe, but still the brand is able
to make its mark because of its good leader and management qualities. The founder of the brand is Steve
Jobsand he is known as one of the most motivating leaders towards the employees. The management and the
leader get to have the power to take more of the decisions; the employees do not have that huge kind of
involvement in the work.
