In today’s competitive business world, leadership plays an important role in
organisations where operations are performed by the management. So, both leadership and
management are the essential part of an organisation. It is necessary to understand leadership
for the company’s management in an effective way (Bls, 2019). Also, it helps every
employee to excel and develop with building an environment. Leadership helps in
accomplishing and driving goals potentially while driving group efforts with the help of
formal sources provided by acquiring managerial position in the company. Thus, it is vital to
robust management and leadership for optimal efficiency in an organisation (Allen, 2018).
The aim of this essay is to know the importance of management while performing community
services in a non-profit organisation. The non-profit organisation taken as an example is
Zero2Hero based in Western Australia. The company is not able to work without its
community and corporate partners for aligning the level of culture and values. Zero2Hero is
for increasing the mental health issues and related awareness services understanding in terms
of young people and children through communication (Haki, 2019). This essay is going to
cover the leadership styles to understand the successful working with knowing the difference
between management and leadership. Further, discussing challenges face by the company’s
managers and leaders in Australia considering community service sector.
In leadership, every leader in the company has different perspective or attitude where
few adopt carrot approach and others stick approach. But, the one thing that is similar is their
working manner and the way of getting things done (Becker, 2019). Thus, the variation is in
their styles that are leadership styles depending on the kind of individuals they deal or
interact with helping to assist for making best out of them as followers. The leadership styles
mainly used by the leaders in the companies for their followers are Laissez-Faire,
Democratic, and Autocratic Leadership Styles (Ng & Sears, 2012). Autocratic Leadership
Style is used where there is authority or full power in the hands of leader and makes every

decision without consulting and communicating to employees or team members. In
Democratic Leadership Style, the leader is participative and makes team members involved
while making decisions (Skinner, 2014). It is a successful style where employees are highly
experienced and skills, and communication is from upward to downward actively. This style
requires leaders that are considerate, intelligent, competent, and creative. Lastly, Laissez-
Faire Leadership Style is for the leaders delegating responsibility to its team members and
telling them to work on their own with no or minimum interference (TEC, 2019). This style
provides maximum scope for flexibility and innovation, with creativity having experienced
and self-motivated individuals not require in-vigilance or supervision level.
Zero2Hero is a charity company and the chairperson of the company is Paul Stone
who works with the CEO Ashlee Harrison of an organisation as a leader. Accordingly, the
leadership style best followed in the company is Democratic also known as Participative as it
works with both Laissez-Faire and Autocratic characteristics (Cowen, 2018). In this style,
leader will listen to the opinions of employees to keep them creative and motivated but will
make final decision rationally. The leader makes sure to be involved in daily activities and
also allowing thinking more creatively for nurturing (Pierro, Raven, Amato, & Bélanger,
2013). Thus, it is effective, encouraging and offers guidance and engages team members
while contributing in the process of making decision by providing higher quality. Also, the
leader creates followers as an important part of their team that helps in fostering goals based
on the commitment of the team within the company (Cherry & Morin, 2019). Further, it is
essential to understand the difference between leadership and management for the success of
the company in relation to community service sector performed by leader and its team
members with the help of management in Australia (Robbins, Coulter, DeCenzo, & Woods,
2013).

Leadership and management are the primary parts of the company but there is a
difference between both and so between leaders and managers. Leadership is an action to
lead a team to achieve a common goal performed by a leader having attributes of inspiring
others by sharing vision, motivating them by acting on the same, and lastly, encouraging
them and others to help overcoming hurdles in relation to that vision (Bridges, 2018). The
core values and skills required in leadership of leaders are motivation, positivity,
communication, delegation, creativity, responsibility, flexibility, trustworthiness, feedback,
and commitment. However, management is the process to control or deal with individuals or
things where focus is more on things than individuals (Ryan, 2016). It is the duty of managers
to coordinate, plan and organize always being methodical, and keep reassessing the process
continuously for ensuring the progress as planned. Managers need to work systematically
with the requirement of tools and metrics to measure the success while accordingly adapting
the company’s process (Robbins, Coulter, DeCenzo, & Woods, 2013). Moreover, the skills
required in a good manager are communications, organization, interpersonal skills,
motivation, forward planning, problem-solving, mentoring, delegation, strategic thinking, and
commercial awareness (Liphadzi, Aigbavboa, & Thwala, 2017).
The difference between both management and leadership, and so in managers and
leaders is in terms of mission, self-awareness, risk and trust, two-way learning, and lastly,
find voice and speak truth. In leadership, the team cannot get its jobs done without
management while management cannot work with passion in the company without leadership
(Hudson, 2017). Moreover, the similarity between both is influencing and motivating by
involving others necessary with experience improvisation. Further, leaders creates vision
where managers create goals, leaders change agents where managers maintain the status quo.
Also, leaders are unique where managers copy, leaders think for long-term where managers
think for short-term (Arruda, 2016). Other than this, leaders grow personally while managers

are relied on proven and existing skills, and leaders build relationships while managers build
processes and systems. Lastly, leaders coach by being competent and optimistic where
managers direct by assigning tasks ad providing guidance, and leaders are capable to create
followers where managers have employees following directions (Belcher, 2015). Thus,
difference between managers and leaders shows the difference between leadership and
management as well.
Though, there are various challenges managers and leaders face in the community
service sector. In Australia, the company taken as an example for considering non-profit
organisation is Zero2Hero. So, even chairperson and CEO of the company with its team
members faced numerous key challenges in case of leadership and management for getting
successful now and further (Robbins, Coulter, DeCenzo, & Woods, 2013). In community
service sector, managers are operating in an uncertain and volatile environment that generates
issues while delivering community services. Firstly, the challenge for managers is to belong
to the “Smart State” mainly applied to the private-sector and government organisations
meanwhile managers in community sector organisations are not protected. It is from
developing need of “smart” solutions for delivering services effectively and make sure about
the viability in future (Paulsen, 2019). Secondly, companies in Australia’s community sector
are not protected from the occurrence of the environment’s dynamic changes respectively.
Further, current trends are also a concern for managers in social policy towards partnership,
collaboration, and amalgamation. Also, accountability, funding and financial management are
the issues for managers as well at the time of services delivery effectively (Hudson, 2017).
In Australia, leaders in the companies face challenges of maintaining profitability and
strategic advantage while focusing on maintaining effectiveness and efficiency in an
environment of political and public accountability (Fratantuono & Sarcone, 2017). There are
challenges of facilitating and enabling community and welfare services delivery. The key

challenge for leaders is to be clear regarding the kind of support required while releasing
responsibilities and working process within the company. Further, establishing the core
mission is also one of the challenges for leaders and to know its response as well. For
instance, intergenerational issue for Zero2Hero due to the influence of parent literacy on child
literacy, wider structural issues such as employment opportunities, and lastly, engagement
poor levels from the community consists of undermining the potential of program’s inclusive
and collaborative aspirations (Palguta & Shea, 2013). The company’s concerns are related to
the disability of implementing positive results from challenges faced while implemented. It
consists of poor communication between disability service providers and participants, rigid
systems and structures in Australia, procedures and structures complexity for the participants’
vulnerability lacking with education struggled to understand. Also, problems accessing
supports with workers providing poor quality services, unavailability of services in remote
and rural areas, and some individuals unable to advocate their own selves (Savtchenko,
2012).
Hence, community service managers and leaders are needed to be committed and
highly-skilled within the company while facing the challenges of increase in services system
complexity among challenging external policy. It requires sustaining, developing and
implementing for being able to respond and adapt demands offering integration, meeting
equity objectives with person-centred services (Wolven, 2019). Moreover, the challenge of
retaining and attracting new entrants is also a challenge in the community services sector with
the increase in current trends. The key challenge for leadership in the company is accurate
governance mechanisms establishment and also getting sure about the diversity (Hayward,
Ramcharan, & Thompson, 2018). In the increasing competitive environment of funding, the
company look for better people in business with leadership and management skills. The
community service sector systems are changing continuously and complex at different levels.

So, managers and leaders need to keep responding on emerging and current challenges in the
context of diversity within an organisation. It requires efficiency ensuring capabilities of both
related to delivering high quality community services (Figueroa, Harrison, & Chauhan,
2019).
To conclude, in the Australia’s community service sector, there are many challenges
face by the company, leaders and managers but using accurate leadership style and
management operations while knowing the working difference between the both can make
the company lead to success. The company taken as an example Zero2Hero is doing great
currently being a non-profit organisation related to charity. Thus, it is not easy to work for
long-term without effective management and leadership, and leaders and managers with skills
and positive motivation within the company (Hudson, 2017). Managers in community and
social service implements and suggest programs and services improvisation. They coordinate
and supervise community organizations and social service programs for non-profit
organizations with working full time. Further, they work with the community members and
other stakeholders identifying programs and services as necessary. Also, look after the
administrative aspects while meeting the objectives through programs related to stakeholders.
Thus, leaders lead the team and managers plan and manage activities to outreach while
advocating for increased awareness of programs, and lastly, write proposals of funding for
social services.
