P3 Different approaches & theories of leadership
There are different approaches and theories of leadership which are adopted by
organisations and top management to perform various function in a organisation (TL, 2019).
Document Page
These leadership theories & approaches can be used by managers & leaders in Corsu as
discussed below:
Situational leadership
A Leadership is implementation of new environment and resources. Also, leader is
successful only when its followers are ready to listen. Collaboration is crucial in between leaders
and followers. So, brainstorming should be done in leadership process as it will create a positive
impact on both the parties. Situational leadership refers to adaption of changes in relation with
situation and time. Thus, this helps in better thought process as well as improvement in the
attributes of leadership and a leader (Tyagi, Kurcz, Grushin, and Nanda,201). Communication,
faith, ideas and motives are some of the important key factors of leadership. A leadership is
incomplete without leader and followers.
Situational leadership helps in forecasting of its contingency that may arise in future . Thus, it
boost and enhance the leadership style of a leader. Followers are the key assets of leader so, they
should be ready to adopt sudden situations at any time.
Hersey and Blanchard model
Also known as H&B, it states that leadership style should be dynamic in nature. Leader
should work under different types of styles according to its followers eagerness. This model is
best known for its factors which depicts the relationship statistics between leader and its
subordinates. Moreover, this model changes the perception of both the leader as well as
subordinates. As both parties are dependent on each other. Hence, it is overall transparent
framework of leadership.
It has following key factors which have been discussed below-
Telling style- This style states that leader directs and assist the subordinates in order to
achieve desired objectives. Thus, its a learning phase of leadership style in which followers are
in training period and unconfident. Corus, a steel making organisation of UK, its leaders are
always ahead and cooperative with its employees as well as subordinates in case of new service
implementation. That is why it has goodwill for its engagement with public.
Deligating style- In this style, leaders gives authority to its subordinates to make the
decisions amongst group members. Corus, always gives its employee best opportunities to show

their capability without any fear. Hence, subordinates feel independent and their morale
increases (WANG, and ZHANG, 2016). This style helps employees to work with honesty and
confident. Better the resources, more effective will be results.
Selling style- This style suggests that makes leaders fifty percent free because in this
situation they give their ideas, or share their thoughts with employees and guide them and
motivates them to complete the given task. When Corus implement new software, websites, or
applications which are sometimes on order basis, their leaders mention their ideas and innovation
and subordinates are always ready to cope up with them. It assists the subordinates in developing
their thought process and working style.
Participating style- Another style is participating style in which firm allows its team
members and subordinates to take part in decision making and activities (Wiwik Rachmarwi,
2018). In context to Corus, employees enjoys the freedom of expression. Enthusiasm is present
in the organisation and optimistic environment revolves around the entity. This style has helped
Corus from becoming private limited company to leading software company or global firm
(Ä°kinci, 2014).
System Leadership: This theory states that there are various functions and activities
which are associated with a particular project and task to be performed in a systematic way. This
assist the company in achievement of objectives in a more effective manner. In Corus
group PLC, this leadership approach is used by management for performing various functions
and operations in a more systemic way. System leadership theory is also assisting organisation in
dealing with changing market conditions. While system leadership theory is also very helpful in
achievement of targets in the specified time period. This theory is beneficial both for
organisation and also for individuals.
Fiedler's Contingency Model- According to this leadership style, leaders should not
stick to one specific approach when it comes to managing the situations. In other words, every
event should be handled by choosing the most suitable approach which can go with the overall
working of the organisation (Zhou, Ge and Wang, , 2020). With reference to Corus, this model
can be used after conducting detailed analysis of internal as well as external factors affecting the
workplace. This may assist the management with effective implementation of the idea about new

much difficulties. The results obtained with this include higher motivation to employees for
achieving the goals and objectives. In addition to this, it may help the management in building
healthy relationships with the staff. Some of the key factors in this model, have been elaborated
below:

accomplish the goals within the time period fixed for the same. In relation to Corus, the
management can be at better place to handle the activities by avoiding any delay. This also leads
to lower conflict among sub-ordinates working in a group. Furthermore, Corus can launch its
new product smoothly.
Position power- It is the authority which gives power to a leader to appreciate as well as
punish individuals on the basis their performance. The main purpose of this is to motivate them
to put their efforts. In the context of Corus, the application of this may help the management to
overcome issues arising for the employees at the workplace.
Leader-Member relations- This refers to the element of trust present among the sub-
ordinates working in the same team. Corus should help the team members to build trust in order
to lower down the conflicts for obtaining favourable results.

which will help their customers in having their orders received in minimum period of time. Here,
managers are using Hersey and Blanchard model where four stages of this model help in
completion of the functions in a more effective manner so that employee performance can be
affected in a way that there is no resistance being faced by the organisation.
