Introduction
Authority help with setting another course alongside the vision for a gathering so they can
take after. Administration helps with giving viable controls and in addition coordinate the
general population alongside the assets in a gathering according to the standards and qualities
that ought to be set up. The ability of the leader is high as they manage the work in the
organization which is equivalent to an effective leader. Leaders of the company put more
efforts into completing the task and attain the goals and objectives. I have worked for
Debenhams by adopting effective leadership styles which help me in improving the skills. In
this report, discussion to be done on the importance of a successful leader. Along with this,
demonstration needs to be done on the difference between the leadership and management.
Moreover, personal reflection is to be provided on leadership while working as a line
manager for Debenhams.

1. What is involved in being a successful leader?
The best pioneer in the organization is having a mix of three spaces which incorporates
individual, logical and social. Individual incorporate the fruitful pioneers which having best
and right qualities, abilities alongside the styles so they can perform viably. Contextual
includes the capability to adopt different approaches so that they can meet the need of
diversified situations. Relational perspective help in developing the positive or valuable
relationships with the people.
Individual: This category of perspective includes traits, skills and styles. Traits include great
man theory or big five personalities. Skills and styles include skills-based model and Lewin’s
leadership styles. Great man theory defines that some individuals are born with the attributes
and these traits are responsible for the positions of power as well as authority. Through the
followers, goals can be attaining. Leadership includes the qualities which include personality,
charm, aggressiveness, persuasiveness as well as intelligence. These are the qualities which
help in increasing learning. When this theory implied to Debenhams, then leaders use the
qualities with the power. The inborn qualities of leadership are essential and sufficient for the
leader so that they become successful. By doing the education, qualities related to leadership
cannot be acquired. This theory impact on personal charisma, wisdom and political skill by
using the power in the best way (Veblen, 2017).
Contextual: This perspective includes the situational approach, path-goal theory and
contingency model. Path-goal theory refers to the theory which depends on specifying the
leader's style along with the behaviour. This theory fits the employee along with the
environment of work so that goals can be attained (Changing Minds, 2018). Path-goal theory
having an aim to raise or boost the level of motivation of employees, satisfaction and
empowerment which help them in becoming part of productive members of the organization.
This theory is classified into four parts which are supportive, directive, participative and
achievement-oriented leadership. Supportive leadership provide the effective concern for the
welfare and create a friendly working environment. Direct leadership help in providing the
effective guidance as well as need to maintain the schedule to complete specific work in
specific time. Participative leadership need to collect the ideas and should be taken into

effective models and use effective knowledge. It is essential for the individual to become a
good leader so that they can understand and analyze the own thinking as well as other
thinking (Henriksen and Børgesen, 2016). If leaders want to attain the success, then they
having improve the qualities. There are three perspective which assist in improving the
leadership qualities which include:
Individual perspective: In this perspective, when leaders of Debenhams working, then they
are facing so many traits which create difficulty to develop the leadership. Along with this,
some skills and styles can be adopted for development. Trait theory help in analyzing the
personal traits which is the key to leadership success. It is categorized into different parts
which include abilities, personal traits and motivators.

Skills also help in improving the leadership which include commanding, visionary, affiliative,
democratic, pacesetting and coaching. Commanding help in fulfilling the demand with the
immediate compliance. Visionary help in mobilizing people towards the vision. Affiliative
assist in creating harmony as well as assist in building emotional bonds. Democratic help in
managing fair participation. Pace-setting help in setting high standards for performance. Last
is coaching which helps in developing the skills of people for future by training (Hays, 2018).
Contextual Perspective: This type of perspective also helps leaders in developing the
leadership by analyzing the ability to adapt their leadership approach so that they can meet
the needs of the situation along with the subordinates. There are four styles related to

remain skills always fresh. There are so many challenges which leader face at the time of

3. What distinguishes leadership from management?
Management: It refers to the process which assists in dealing as well as controlling the
diversified things as well as people. Managers analyze that all the available resources need to
utilize by the leaders so that they can offer the best resources. Effective management is
essential which help in attaining the objectives of business (Răducan and Răducan, 2014).
Along with this, management needs to use best managerial functions include planning,
organizing, coordinating along with the controlling as it helps in increasing the performance.
Management or administration of Debenhams needs to do effective conversation within the
company as well as outside the company. There are some activities which are included in the
management such as interpersonal, decisional and informative activities. The employees of
management make the effective coordination among each other as it is important to attain the
goals. Management is an ongoing process as it includes the cycle which helps in completing
the operations (Bolden, 2016).

contribution which is directly linked to the process of leadership. There are four factors
which are included in leadership includes followers, situation, leaders and communication

managers need to focus on setting, measuring and analyzing goals.

brand. Whereas, Manager evaluate the competencies as well as behaviours so that they can
learn from others (Arruda, 2016).
Leaders having a willing that need to take more risk so that they can try the new things. But
on the other hand, managers work in the company to minimize the risk so that they can avoid
or control the issues or problems.
Leaders of the company focus on people that is all the stakeholders as they having an impact
on analyze the vision. Leaders assist in building the loyalty along with the trust. Whereas,
managers of the company provide effective focus on the structure or procedure which help in

4. What have you learnt about leadership from your own experiences, on this course
and elsewhere?
I am working as a line manager in Debenhams, I have learned about leadership is needed to
analyze the vision and on the basis of that, motivation should be provided to the team. Leader
and manager both need to fulfil the expectations of the company and attain the goals and
objectives. Natural leaders should do right things by putting more efforts with the exceptional
performers. Leaders always are decisive as a leader need to make an effective decision as it
helps in attaining the success. If a leader takes a wrong decision, then it affects the progress
as well as assist in destroying the morale.
I have learned that if leaders of the business entity utilize the diversified styles then it helps in
managing and dealing with the situation so that performance can be enhanced. This provides
the effective assistance to leaders in dealing with each and every situation. When I am
working I came to distinguish that how the leaders deal with the different problems and how
they manage by using effective solutions. The management of Debenhams with the
leadership as it helps in enhancing the performance by doing the effective operations so that
success can be attained.
I am working in Debenhams and facing the issues that are I cannot make a fast and quick
decision. I am agreed with each and every situation without thinking. It is necessary that I
have to use best and effective skills to improve the decision making. For this, I have to take
suggestions from experts or from my senior members. I have to do effective conversation
with the other individuals of the team. When I am doing work, I am facing insecurity and
help other team members. Along with this, I have to put extra efforts so that work can be
complete with the effective security.
I have learned about the leadership that leader always is confident as it helps a leader in
completing the work with the best way as well as also in the decided time. The leader should
be an influencer as a leader should influence so that staff members can complete the work
effectively and efficiently. It is essential that I have to work on my personal skills and need to
improve so that I can deal with the number of diversified staff members who are having
different behaviour and nature. I have also learned that leader needs to analyze the work and
deliver best products which help in increasing productivity.
