INTRODUCTION
Management and leadership are playing vital role in success and growth of companies.
As it help to achieve greater progress in competitive business environment that affects strategic
management and leadership tactics. The current assignment will be based on Primark, which
falls under category of leading clothing companies in UK, apparel sector. This study will discuss
role of and relationship between leadership and management styles within historical context by
using appropriate theories from 1900 up to latest day.
MAIN BODY
Role of management and leadership styles in new situation by utilizing theories
COVID- 19 is one of the new situations in which leadership and management styles
within Primark Organization plays important role. Management can be defined as set of norms
related to functions of planning, organizing, monitoring and controlling and application of these
principles in a specific situation, like above one. There are range of management styles are
accessible in the world of business that manager in Primark firm can use to manage performance
and practices of workers as well as business according to norms of new pandemic, named corona
virus.
Autocratic is one of the most used to management styles that manager in chosen clothing
company can use to work accordant to situation and norms of COVID-19 (ZAMANI,
POURATASHI and JAHANSEIRKAJANI, 2017). This style is really very essential in this
condition, because workers needs to work according to government rules and policies and has to
follow guidelines, which is only possible when manager can use right management style such as
Autocratic. It plays role guiding and monitoring applicant’s performance and act at workplace
while providing services to consumers. It is a management style wherein one individual controls
all judgements and takes few little inputs from other team members. Autocratic manager make
decisions based on his or her own beliefs and do not include others for their recommendation as
it may increase risk as failure when advice does not work effectively. Manager with this form
can take decision about how to make plan to train workers which makes them able to work by
taking proper precautions and considering pandemic guidelines that is quite beneficial for
employees as well as customers.
Situational leadership style also contributes in new situation facing by Primark and
other clothing retail companies (Fernandez and Shaw, 2020). It plays significant role by

motivation workers and encourage them to satisfy people through hard work, which is quite
beneficial for organization in term of building positive brand image in market and gaining
attention of new buyers. Leader with this style, can implement plan relate to training and
development of workers because it allow each applicant to work even better with proper
precautions that satisfy customers. They may respond to COVID – 19 situation by commanding,
training, persuading, delegating, and collaborating staff.
Relationship between leadership and management within historical context
Leadership is art or act of motivating workers to perform towards achieving a set
objective and aim. While management is refer to administration of managing work of company
and applicants. Both terms provide several benefits to Primark and allow them to gain
competitive advantages. It can be said that management and leadership drive all workers and
team members towards achieving business goals and gaining competitive edge, which is actually
very essential for chosen brand. With the help of both terms firm can obtain desire outcomes, so
it can be analysed that leadership and management have strong relationship that plays crucial
role in company (Choma and Kowalczyk, 2019).
Historical context refers to religious, political, social and economic conditions that
existed during a sometime or place, like pandemic. In regard to COVID-19, management and
leadership within Primark company provide many benefits as it help to guide workers how to
work by considering safety and health needs of human.
Scientific management theory is one of the earliest management concepts that help
manager to work effectively and manage organizational performance in effective manner. It aid
to analyse and synthesize workflows (Su, 2017). The main objective of this theory is to enhance
economic efficiency and productivity, especially workers performance in pandemic which turns
into increasing consumer’s satisfaction. This theory helps to reduce cost of production and
manufacture better quality items according to needs of buyers. For example, due to corona virus
many buyers prefer to buy purchase quality products made from natural ingredients that are less
harmful and chemical free. Scientific management concept goals at higher productivity and
applicants get increase wages. With this theory, manager carries out their work systematically
and effectively in accordance with predetermined plans or tactics. It helps to guide workers and
instruct them in order to carry out act according to situations and plan prepared in advance by
manager.

Situational leadership theory is the modern leadership styles that most leaders in recent
time are used to create positive work environment at workplace and manage workers
performance (Wright, 2017). It can also apply in COVID-19 situation where employees need
right directions and guidance from their seniors like leaders within Primark. It is an efficient way
of leadership because it adapts to group needs and sets a beneficial balance for entire company.
It can be said that situational leadership theory and scientific management concept
manage operations and functions of Primark in systematic manner (Charoensukmongkol and
Phungsoonthorn, 2020). As it aid to balance demand and work of staff according to situation and
enhance their performance level successfully. By using situational leadership theory, leader in
chosen company can take action to manage workers works and activities systematically.
CONCLUSION
From above analysis, it has been concluded that by using appropriate and suitable
management and leadership style, leader and manager within Primark Company handling every
situation in effective manner. As it support develops productive and positive working culture at
workplace that provides benefits to organization in term of increasing their sales.
