INTRODUCTION
Management is the process of managing people in organization and utilizing company’s
resources effectively. All these activities support the manager in minimizing issues and
enhancing working performance of enterprise (Shen, 2015). Present study is based on TUI which
is the leading travel and tourism organization in UK. Current assignment will discuss various
management styles and characteristic of leaders. Furthermore, it will conduct own SWOT
analysis. In addition, report will define the ways to motivate employees so that they can
contribute well in accomplishing goals of business unit.
TASK 1
1.1 Different management styles
Managers are responsible for managing business activities in the organization. Managers
have to look at available resources of firm and need to manage these resources. Individuals
organize plan and monitor activities in an effective manner that support in accomplishing tasks
on time. For that, manager takes support of various management styles (Shinde, 2015).
Description of management styles is given as below:
Human relationship approach
It is considered as one of the significant approaches in which higher authorities develop a
strong relationship with their employees. They believe that if there is strong bonding in between
employees and manager then it will help in smooth running of the operations. TUI adopts this
management approach that helps managers of company in creating a positive environment and
minimizing confusion at the workplace (Vinkhuyzen and Karlsson-Vinkhuyzen, 2014). Strong
relationship in between employees help in improving communication. By this way, all workers
communicate with each other properly which help in completing tasks on time with quality.
Classical management approach
It is another type of management style in which managers are more concerned for the
productivity and efficiency of business unit. They always aim to generate more profit in the
organization. Earlier, TUI was taking support of this classical management style in which higher
authorities were not paying attention on the needs of employees (Wang, Noe and Wang, 2014).
This style helped organization in raising productivity of organization. Thomas Cook is another
travel firm that adopts this management style. This sometimes create negativity among all

employees and it demotivates them but it is beneficial in enhancing profit and productivity of the
organization (Lo and et.al, 2015).
Contingency management style
It is another kind of approach in which managers concentrate on situations and
accordingly, they react at the workplace. They always observe condition of company and
behaviour of employees. This helps the manager of firm in allotting responsibilities to all staff
members as per their skills and improving working efficiency (Njanja and et.al, 2013).
1.2 Leadership characteristics
Leaders are the persons who lead team in the organization. They always inspire people in
the organization and encourage them to perform well at workplace. Characteristics of leaders in
TUI are described as below:
Positive behaviour: Leaders of TUI always behave with positivity in each critical
situation. They believe that if leaders behave positively then it encourages others as well
and in critical situations, all people perform well without any issue (Vinkhuyzen and
Karlsson-Vinkhuyzen, 2014). Leaders of TUI take support of democratic leadership style
in which leaders involve the employees in decision making process.
Empowerment: Leaders of TUI also have empowering capabilities. They always give
power to their employees to take decision for the welfare of business unit. Company
involves them in decision making process and take their suggestions. It makes them feel
valued and they always contribute well in accomplishing goal of the business unit
(Hashim and Wok, 2014). Empowering employees motivate workers and make them
positive towards the brand.
Communication skill: Leaders of the organization always have to coordinate well with
other workers. Leaders of TUI take support of formal meeting and email communication.
Both these mediums help leaders of t organization in circulating important information to
all employees (Njanja and et.al, 2013). Effective communication is helpful in making
people aware with their roles and responsibilities. By this way, all persons perform their
work significantly in the business unit.
Innovative: Leaders need to have creativity and innovative skills. Innovation helps in
bringing positive changes at the workplace and support in improving overall performance

of organization. Innovative ideas enhance the working efficiency of staff members as
well (Hashim and Wok, 2014).
Motivation: Leaders need to have motivational skills. Individuals need to encourage
others and have to make them feel happy in organization. Leaders of TUI have these
characteristics that help them in enhancing satisfaction level of employees and retaining
them in organization for longer duration (Shinde, 2015).
1.3 Communication process in organization
Communication is the process of exchanging information from one person to another. It
is very important for the organization that to develop communication among all employees in
workplace so that all persons can interact with pothers properly without any confusions. It is the
way of sending and receiving messages within the business environment among all interrelated
individuals (Njanja and et.al, 2013). It is beneficial tool that supports in accomplishing the task
without mistake. Organizational communication process mainly concentrate on developing
healthy relationship between employees and higher authorities so that they can share their views
with each other easily. Communication process implements in the TUI is described as below:
Sender: Sender is the person who circulate the message to others in meaningful way
Encoding: Once message is sent then encoding is done and it has been turned in
understanding ways
Receiving message: Receiver receives the message that has been sent by the sender and
individual try to understand meaning of this message (Vinkhuyzen and Karlsson-
Vinkhuyzen, 2014).
Selection of medium: TUI selects appropriate medium for making communication with
consumers, employees and other stakeholder.

TUI is the leading travel and tourism organization which takes support of upward
communication process. In this process higher authorities are the senders, they develop a
message and sent it to all employees. Workers receive this message and they read it and
understand this information (Shen, 2015). They can revert on this email if they have any issue
regarding the information. This is communication that is adopted by TUI leaders in the
workplace.
1.4 Organizational culture and changes in the business
Organizational culture can be define as values, belief of the enterprise. On the bases of
their culture company conducts their operations and treat all employees accordingly. TUI is the
popular tourism brand that always concentrate on providing high quality services to its
consumers. For meeting with their needs entity conduct market research and accordingly it
design travel packages for the employees (Wang, Noe and Wang, 2014). Company aims to retain
its skilled labour in the workplace for longer duration. For that it gives reward to the employees
and provide them training so that they also feel happy and retain in workplace for longer
duration. TUI believes in resolving complains of the consumers soon, for that it has developed
customer services department where employees give quick response on quarries of clients.

2.1 Assessing own management skills and performance
There are various types of skills that are required to be present in a manager so that any
situation that may crop up in TUI can effectively vibe solved through it. These management
skills are inclusive of decision making aspects, problem solving, delegation of authorities,
effective communication between the management and subordinates and also improve time
management aspects. It helps in ensuring that all the functions that are related to managers are
appropriately being conducted so that employees are able to understand their responsibilities in a
well-defined manner.
Measuring the performance, it was then analysed that it is important for the management to
have management as well as leadership skills that can help in coping up with the issues that may
crop up in the organization. In this scenario, I have been able to perform in a team since last few
months which makes me eligible enough to be a manager. Further, I am able to delegate duties in
the absence of manager. Further, no issues are faced by the team when I am acting as manager
and everyone tend to work quite cooperatively. Further, I tend to have prudent decision making
aspect that makes me fit for this job.
2.2 Analysis of personal strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats
Based on the training period in TUI, own SWOT analysis can be performed in the
following manner:
Strengths:
Creative and analytical thinking have helped me in finding positive in every uncertain
situation as well (Berman and et.al., 2012).
High range of networking with having large connections with the corporate people. Corporate achievement experience that can be applied on TUI as well.
Weaknesses:
Lack of confidence and being short tempered can drag me back in achieving my dreams
High end educational and training skills.
I am not able to conduct meetings on regular basis due to public speaking being my major
weakness. Slightly underconfident when involved in talking to large group of people.

Threats:
It is challenging to lead a large team if all the people belong different thought process.
Constant change in the technology threaten me as I not very technical friendly. It takes time
to gain knowledge regarding the new one. Staff shortage can increase overall work of the organization, it can negatively affect my
creativity and analytical thinking aspects.
Opportunities:
Adequate knowledge in marketing can help me in convincing the team in an effective

There are various objectives that can be set at personal and professional level both. In
order to achieve those objective, it becomes important to brush up the knowledge aspects for
effective and efficient returns. Hence, the framed objectives can be:
To enhance the overall output of the team by 20%
To rightly track the performance of each employee and delegate the responsibilities and work
accordingly.
To find out the ways that can help in making the environment more technological friendly in
the team.
It is important that all the goals and objectives that have been ser by the manager are
appropriately being achieved and prioritized in a chronological basis. It helps in ensuring that
which objective is required to be performed and achieved when. Being a manager, al the
objectives are linked to team and organizational success. Hence, it is important to have adequate
knowledge regarding functions of the business so that ultimate objectives can appropriately be
placed and then achieved. Further, having strong formal connection with the employees can also
play an important role in achieving the overall functions (Brewster, Chung and Sparrow, 2016).

3.1 Leading and motivating team to achieve agreed goals and objectives
It is important that the team is formed in such a manner that they are motivated enough to
achieve their functions that have been allotted to them. The goals and objectives that are framed
by the managers are prepared in such a manner that they are appropriately been achievable by
team. Motivating them will not only help in achieving the overall goals and objectives of the
organization, but it will also play an important role in employee satisfaction aspects leading to
enhance the overall employees’ retention ratio of the organization as well. There are various
methods that can be used as a manager of TUI, in order to motivate the employees in a maximum
possible manner.
In this scenario, performance linked benefits can be initiated and rewarding them at their
effective performance can help. The manager can also take steps in creating a friendly working
environment so that they can resolve their formal and informal issues appropriately without any
type of hesitation. Encouraging friendly competition in the environment can also act positively in
ensuring that the overall goals and objectives of the business are appropriately being achieved.
Being a leader and not a followers can always motivate employees to work in the most effective
manner.
3.2 Justification on managerial decisions being taken to support the achievement of aim and
objectives
There are various managerial decisions that are required to be taken by the manager so as
to ensure that with organizational objectives, the personal objectives of each employee can also
be achieved. In this scenario, steps are made by the manager where employees are rewarded
based upon their performance. A word of encouragement can always motivate the employees to
work in their full swing in such a manner that maximum output can be generated out of them. It
also helps in making sure that they are motivated enough to work with the organization. Another
step taken by the manager of TUI can be encouraging a friendly competition in the environment
of organization, where people do compete with each other in a friendly manner.
Researchers have stated that healthy competition in the business always help in
enhancing the overall output ratio of the organization (Jiang and et.al., 2012). The manager has
also initiated to be a leader who always try to motivate his follower, which can always help the

organization to grow in such a manner that employees are able to achieve their both personal as
well as professional goals. These steps not only help the organization to fulfil their goals and
objectives, but it also plays an important role in ensuring that maximum amount of output can be
generated by the employees.
TASK 4
4.1 Own managerial and personal skills that help in supporting career development
There are various management skills that are possessed by me which can ultimately help
me in increasing the output of TUI where I may work as a manager. In this scenario, I need have
decision making skills as it is the must have skill that a manager should have that can help him in
growing his personal skills as well as professional competency. It increases areas of growth for
individuals in such a manner that one can explore his area of job in most effective and efficient
manner. Development of personal and professional skills in an individual helps in ensuring that
there is adequate growth in the career with utmost increase in depth of knowledge of subject
matter as well.
Other managerial skills that are quite important to be hold by individuals are related to
critical thinking which help in drawing out specific results for the organization ultimately leading
to achievement of business growth and thereby, its set goals. Having all skills to be a manager is
an important aspect where it helps in career development of the individual. It becomes easy to
proceed with constant growth in the field of manager and get promoted on the job as well. It also
helps in balancing economic and monetary life of individuals as well in the best possible manner.
4.2 Reviewing career and personal development needs to produce developmental plan
There is the requirement to have career and personal development needs to be fulfilled in
a manner that maximum amount of benefits can be generated in production of self-development
plan. A major role is played by the skills that are hold by individuals in such a manner that plan
can be created to improve overall skills of the individuals which can ultimately lead to overall
development of individuals. Constant growth in skills and variety of knowledge present with the
individual, strengths and weaknesses can be initiated so that skills can be diversified in various
areas. Further, assessment can be made that which career path will be most suitable for
individual.
