INTRODUCTION
Management refers to the process where guiding the development, maintenance along
with allocation of resources are there to attain the goals of organisation. This process involves
the planning, organising and controlling followed by leading. In this report, Operation and
management is a process which is concerned with converting processing materials which is into
finished goods. In this report there is description about understanding the concept of
management along with operations for examining the impact on business. Tesco is the chosen
company which is the multinational groceries along with general merchandise retailer.
Headquarter is in Welwyn Garden city England. This is third largest retailer in the world in
reference to gross revenue and having ninth position in relation to revenues. This organisation
deals with variety of supermarkets retailers and hypermarkets etc. In this report there is
discussion about the role of leader and the function of manager in the organisation. There is also
discussion about the how to apply the role and function of leader and manager in different
situations. There is some discussion related with understanding of relationship in between
leadership and management in contemporary business environment (Leitch 2017).

P1 Define and compare different roles and characteristics of manager as well as leader
Manager- Manager is a person who is responsible for motivating supervising directing
their staff members for different processes of the business. Nu managers are those who are
having the authority to lead all the department and their functions, their employees in proper
manner for better productivity of the company. Here, main task of manager is to develop relevant
and appropriate strategies which can be performed effectively at the supermarket.
Leader- Leader is the one who is having the capability to make their work done from
their staff members where there is consideration of the objectives of an organisation. Leaders are
having the authority to instruct the employee along with able to influence them for better
performance to achieve the goal of the company. The main objective of leader instruct and
enhancing the level of productivity which is why motivating the employee in an effective manner
(Hall 2016).

Manager and leaders are said to be have same type of role and responsibility but they are
having different function than each other in an organisation. Managers are those who set the
objectives according to mission and vision. Whereas, leaders are those who communicate such
vision with their staff member and motivate them. This is regarding to follow the guidelines
which is given by leaders for attain the organisational objectives.

communicate with employees in an effective manner to completion of task as per us standards in
given period of time. The role of leaders and managers are to results in better growth and success
of the organization effective manner.
The suitable function of managers along with the role of leaders are defined as under
Planning- It is the significant function of Manager in Tesco, where deep learning and
setting objectives along with aim to enhance the sales in an organization. Strategies are
developed by the manager of Tesco where continuous improvement and enhancement is there in
the organization performance. Where as the role of leader in Tesco needs to communicate with

and objectives accordingly (Lin 2019).
Organizing- Managers of Tesco utilizes different resources to give two result as
fulfillment of desired goals. Leader's role is to allocate all the resources properly along with
motivating the staff members which can use the given resources to attend positive along with
best result in an organization.
Directing- Managers assign tasks to the staff members in the company. Whereas, leader
perform role of development where some instruction is there for performing different activities.
Staffing- Tesco hires talented and effective staff members who are able to do the work
in an effective manner and which are selected as per their skills. Leaders influencing and
motivating their employees, so they can use their skills for getting the objective of the
organization.
Coordinating- In Tesco, managers co-ordinate all the functions which is there in the
organization like production, research Finance etc. Here, leaders coordinates with their team get
the job done. (Tang 2016).
Controlling- Controlling refers to the control over all the activities which is there in the
organization. This help in performing well and give better result to the organization.

The role and function of leaders and managers help each other which is by working their
own task which is set to be done in the set period of time. In this time Tesco is facing a situation
which is increase in the price of raw material along with declining sales demand. In this situation
function of manager and role of leader is to develop an effective strategy which is related with
promotion of products along with services that can help in creating the demand and sale of the
goods in the marketplace (Litano 2016). The contemporary theory of management in Tesco, can
help in dealing with raising cost of raw material which causing low demand. Here, role of
operating manager is to focus on differentiating suppliers who offers raw material at lower price
is can help in reducing the cost of production. Moreover, leaders are able to influence and
motivate their staff member to focus on adopting new technology. This can help in dealing with

such issue in an effective manner. Managers are able to develop good relation with suppliers
which can help in guiding the marketing team to implement promotional activities. Leaders are
able to motivate and influence dear team members for implementing activities in the systematic
manner by analyzing their performance level which can give improvement in right way. Role of
leaders along with function of managers can help the company to deal with issues. This can also
help in improving the productivity and performance of the organization.
P3 Different theories and models of approach including situation leadership systems leadership
and contingency
Leadership have an important role within an enterprise which can help in increasing the
efficiency of employees. It's important for a leader to use specific form of leadership theory or
style which can help in achieving the goals and objective. There are different type of leadership
Theory which are like contingency situation alert system leadership Theory (Aldossari 2016).
Situational leadership- This is the one in which leader is able to change the objective
according to the situation. This can help the organization to get the better strategy for that
situation and can help in to improve to get more business along with higher productivity. This
theory is having better result with time in relation to better growth of the organisation.
System leadership- This refers to the organization where in large body rather than some
specific individual which is comprises of different subsystems stop subsystems include work
team groups individual departments facilities etc. This theory believes in success of entity which
depends upon interconnection communication and synergy. In Tesco, system leadership is
needed to completion the multitasking project. Manager of firm should be ensure about the
theory. So, can be used in proper manner where objectives can be achieved. It has also analyzed
that such leadership style helps in making decisions which is related to work area.
Contingency leadership- This says that there is no any best leadership style which can
give the success of an organization. This leadership mainly focuses on contingency where
different situation all factors which involves the behavior of followers of leaders (Behar-

Operation management refers to a function which can be used by an enterprise for
analyzing its function and achieving business objective which is by utilizing the available
resources. There are some of the approaches which are discussed below;
Six Sigma- This is the approach of operation management which is based on system to
minimize any defects which is in the organization and managing better work quality. In Tesco
this can help in setting of standard for future performance and managing in relation to reducing
overhead cost (Nasir, N 2017).
Lean production- It refers to the approach where there is reducing the wastage and
maintaining better quality of product and services which is offered by the organization for stop
this helps Tesco in using the proper use of resources which is according to market need.
Queuing theory- In relation to improve the efficiency along with working system of
company where queuing is a system approach. Tesco use this theory for decision making

its functionality to gain competitive advantage in several marketplace. The manager adopt CSR
activities by play very essential role in organizational growth and development.
Corporate social responsibility- This is one of the most important factor which affect
business at wider ordered series. It is integration of economical and social business where they
contribute to society. CSR having a large impact on environment of business which create

so on. In this role of manager along with higher authorities are able to communicate all the
policies with their staff members. Leader of TESCO, which must be sure about their plan along

various threat which is analyzed during survey. There are some factors which highly influence
operational management activities and decision making process of manager and leaders. CSR
refers to a process of company integrates with environmental and social factors and included
business operation. Such factors are create impact on operation management, managers and
leaders in context with TESCO develop new plan and strategy as per their decision which being
create positive impact in organization and enhance sale.

As per the above discussion, business operation are defined as the process which help
organization to increase their value and use their resource in such a way which is being profitable
