EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The development of leadership and management is important so that the leaders and
managers of organisation can work efficiently and direct the work of employees in such a
manner that company goals are efficiently achieved. Leadership approaches and styles help
indirecting the work of employees while management help in organising the work so that they

INTRODUCTION
Leadership and management plays an important role in an organisation by influencing,
coordinating, directing, organising, motivating, integrating and controlling the employees and
their behaviour in company which help in achieving company goals efficiently. Leaders are
helpful in guiding the employees and building their morale so that they can work in a particular
direction which help in completion of work on time and in an efficient manner. Managers on the
other hand plans and organises the work in company so that it can function and operate smoothly
in the competitive working environment. Leadership development is program or activity that
help in making better leaders so that employees can be motivated to increase their productivity
and performance (Barkhuizen and et. al., 2014). Management development is a systematic
process of training and developing managerial personnel so that they can gain and apply skills,
knowledge and insights to manage the work so that organisations can work effectively and
efficiently. In this report differences and similarities between management and leadership will be
discussed along with their roles and responsibilities in company. Further a comparison between
three leaders will be done based on their skills and behaviours along with various methods of
developing leadership and management.

Similarities and differences between leadership and management
Leadership is a process by which an individual can direct, guide and influence the
behaviour and work of others so that they can behave in a particular manner which help in
achieving company goals and objectives. It is thus important that leaders have the ability to
motivate and influence work of others through efficient and effective interpersonal skills which
help in building trust and confidence in sub-ordinates so that goals can be achieved (Day and
Dragoni, 2015).
Management is related to planning, decision-making, organising, controlling and
directing all the company resources so that they can efficiently used and coordinated which can
help in achieving company goals and objectives. Management of an organisation play an
important role in achieving company goals by building a working environment so that employees
can work together efficiently and effectively.

Similarities between leadership and management: The management and leadership are
both concerned with working with people of company so that they can be encouraged and
directed towards attaining a specific goal. Both create the foundation and fictional structure of an
organisation and influence the way in which work is organised and carried out. They also
influence the work culture, organisational structure, power and politics in a company which
affect the performance of employees and their ability to use their skills and talents so that
company goals can be achieved ((Hall and Rowland, 2016). Management and leadership are also
concerned with allocation and utilisation of available resources in an efficient manner so that the
customer needs and wants can be profitably met which help in the success and sustainability of
company. Thus it can be concluded that the common function of management and leadership is
to achieve company goals in an efficient and effective manner by managing and directing the
work of employees.

efficient manner. Following are some of the roles and responsibilities of managers in modern
organisations: Daily operations: The main function of a manager is to ensure that daily functions of a
department or group of employees can proceed in a smooth manner so that overall
company daily operations can be done in an efficient manner. Staffing: The managers are responsible to evaluate the need of staffing and recruiting
new employees in company so that sufficient human resources can be maintained in
company which help in achievement of company goals on time. It is their responsibility
to hire, interview and train employees so that they can be directed to use their skills and
talents in achievement of company goals (Hübner, Holzapfel and Kuhn, 2015). Goal setting: It is important that achievable goals are set by managers of company so that
all the company resources can be efficiently utilised in achievement of these goals. This

the competitive marketplace. Administration: Managers are responsible for managing the administrative work of
company and corresponding the work of departments so that company goals are

own hard work, dedication an d optimism so that employees can be motivated to behave
in a similar manner. This will help in leading the group of employees more efficiently so
that team goals can be achieved within a specific time. Communicating vision: It is important that the goals that are to be achieved are
communicated in an effective manner to all the team members so that they can work hard
towards achieving those goals. Setting company priorities: It is important that the priorities of work are set by the
leaders so that workers can be motivated to work towards achieving the most important
work which can help in organising work of employees in an orderly manner.

Leaders are the people who have ability to influence the behaviour of others in such a
way that they can be made to work in a particular manner so that company goals are efficiently
achieved. Leadership is the art of motivating group of people so that thy can work towards
achieving company goals. Following are the different leadership styles which can be used by
leaders to provide directions, implement plans and motivate people:
Democratic leadership style: Under this style the leaders involve team members in
decisions making and give importance to their views and ideas which help in taking efficient and
effective decisions which are adopted by all. This style is used by organisations where team
members are highly skilled and experienced which make their opinions count in decision-making
(Lawton and Páez, 2015). This style of leadership is followed by Robert Mueller who is an
American lawyer and government official and who also served as the sixth director of FBI. He is
well known for his integrity and honesty which help him in becoming an efficient leader and
influencing his followers so that they can be motivated to work in a particular direction. The
power of Robert Mueller help in making him successful as he take efficient decisions as a
government official. People follow the decisions made by him as they have hopes attached to
him that he will take fair decisions which will help in increasing justice in the society. Mueller is
honest and believes in integrity which help in increasing the support that he receive from people
thereby making him a successful leader.
The leadership theory which can be applied while using this style of leadership is
situational theory which help the leaders in critically analysing the situation and interpreting the
consequences of their decisions so that effective results can be produced. The leaders using this
leadership theory are most knowledgeable and experienced which help them in making decisions
in accordance with situations. Robert Mueller use this theory in making legal decisions that help
him in increasing justice and integrity in the department thereby making him a successful leader.
Autocratic leadership style: In this style of leadership leaders take control over all
decisions and do not consider the opinions and views of team members which means that the
team members have to follow instructions given to them. Through this style of leadership
decisions can be delivered in complete organisation easily and quickly and also help in quick
decision making which help in completing work within deadline. This style of leadership is

followed by Bill Gates who is a software developer, business magnet, investor and philanthropist
and is also the co-founder of Microsoft Corporation. He follows autocratic leadership style so
that the work can get completed on time and in an efficient manner and also to take quick
decisions as in the software and IT industry fluctuations arise quite frequently which needs quick
decision-making power. The knowledge of Bill gates helped him in becoming a successful leader
as due to his knowledge he was able to develop software and gain a competitive advantage in the
world. Also the autocratic leadership followed by him helped him in making the vision and
mission of company clear to employees and gave them clear instructions on doing their work.
This helped in increasing the efficiency with which work was done and also quick decisions
were made in company. People follow Bill gates so that they can complete the work given to
them with complete responsibility so that they can contribute towards company success. Also
they follow Bill gates so that they can become efficient in the areas of their work which is
important for becoming successful (Maddalena, 2016).
The leadership theory which can be used in autocratic leadership style is contingency
theory so that the leaders can take actions based on situations which is important to take quick

services which help in fulfilling the needs and wants of their customers.
Transformational leadership style: This style of leadership is considered as the most
desirable styles as it help in creating a thriving work culture through effective communication
among team members. This leadership focuses on setting high goals and deadlines so that
challenging tasks can be completed by working together which help the company to gain a
competitive advantage in the market. This leadership style is followed by Satya Nadella who is
the CEO of Microsoft Inc. This style of leadership help him in being responsive to the market
needs, increase employee engagement, deliver high financial return to shareholders. This style
also help in building an efficient work culture and integrate the work of all members so that
company objectives can be achieved. The position of Satya Nadella helps him in becoming a
successful leader due to which he can take efficient decisions in the company and bring policies
and strategies which will help in increasing company profits. People follow him so that they can
grow and develop in the areas in which they work and also so that the work at hand can be

three successful leaders who possess many skills and their own leadership styles which help
them in becoming successful leaders. Following are the skills and behaviours which can be
further developed in them so that they can build efficient relations with their followers and
influence them to work in an efficient manner: Striving for feedback: It is important that the leaders give constructive and encouraging
feedbacks to their followers so that they can be made aware about the areas where
improvements can be made. This will help in making the work of their followers more
efficient which will help in improving their efficiency of work that will result in
completion of work on time. When constructive feedbacks are given to the employees it
help in encouraging them that they can do better which result in diverting their efforts so
that their performance can be further improved. It is important that all the three leaders
give their followers feedback which help in encouraging them to make improvements in
their work (McIntyre and Alon, 2014). Trustworthiness: It is important that the leaders increase the trust of their followers in
them so that they can efficiently motivate to follow them. Trustworthiness can be
increased by giving clear visions to employees so that they can understand the level of
