1. 2 Need for effective leadership and management
Effective leadership and even management within healthcare and social care have
brought about various healthcare policy changes being advocated and most of these are meant to
offer healthcare coverage to the less fortunate like the poor in the society. Moreover, some of the
policies being advocated are meant to offer preventive care to the populations that are considered
to be at risk. Furthermore, some of the leaders have gone ahead to advocate for various changes
that are meant to ensure that healthcare delivery is made to a large group of people including the
population in far regions or those that lack quality medical services (Nicol, 2018). Therefore, it is
the responsibility of every manager or even leader to ensure that suitable reforms are met and
that the community gets to benefit from whatever reforms are advocated for by the leaders.
Furthermore, effective management plays a crucial role in ensuring that the doctors and the
nurses offer quality services to the patients who go to hospitals to seek medical care (Burke et
al., 2017).
Furthermore, the managers have to be certain that the budget is properly managed and
this ensures that the hospital offers the best services to its patients whenever there is need.
Moreover, a well-planned budget by the management will ensure that the planned activities by
health care or even the social care organizations are met and carried out (Plsek, 2018).
Leadership together with management have played a crucial role in boosting the morale of the
various health and even social workers and this has led to improved output and performance of

services for in and out patients. The hospital is completely equipped with modern facilities.
There are over 5,500 registered nurses, with around 900 registered nurses at the Princess of
Wales Hospital from ABMU.
In an incident on May 2014 some of nurse staffs of the hospital were criticised for the
death of an elderly patient who was treated at the hospital. It was reported that the there had been
poor professional behaviour in the care of frail older people who dies due to it. The Healthcare
inspector carried out a mental health unit review in 2015 and found that it had insufficient staff
to carry on safe levels of care (Jackson et al., 2016).
A old age patient who was diabetic and also had some more health issues. Everything
was not recorded properly. The Fir contained inadequate recording of daily fluid intake. There
were no specific details of the care and treatment plan. A care strategy plan was also missing.
Due to lack of leadership qualities and mis-management police have already charged three
nurses. They are facing the charges of falsifying medical records and the wilful neglect of
vulnerable patients. The administration at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board
(ABMU) tried their own policy check and after finding that almost seventeen nurses were
involved in malpractice they were suspended (Condon et al., 2018).
The hospital started to take its disciplinary action against those who were responsible for the
damage to the patient the reputation of the hospital.
2.1 The management at fault
The purpose of the Nursing measures is to introduce new legal duties on the NHS and
Local Authorities in Wales so that they can work together and in consultation with Nursing
policy. All the Measures taken are not targeted for any specific service provider but applies to
all. The test result of the management came out to be very strategic and specific. The ABMU has
to refocus the present health service and training of the nurses (Connolly, Jacobs, and Scott,
2018). They need to spend more on maintaining good health of the existing patients by training
the prevailing nurses at the hospital.
Existing policy and practice are signalling a move towards NHS system with a bigger
focus on the services in the community. It is important to refocus on strengthening the
services for in and out patients. The hospital is completely equipped with modern facilities.

the health system.

to lower the quality of services that are set to be offered in case the issue is not resolved.

has led to an increase in the cases of unprofessional service provided by the nurses. Patients
within various countries need abundant leaders and even the staff to handle any kind of
