Leadership styles and management theory 2
Introduction
This report provides a detailed discussion on learnings from the group work and the
development of the leadership and management styles. The task was to contextualize the
leadership skills of a leader and the weakness and the strength of the individual (Daft, 2018).
The presentation provides a detailed outline of Jack Ma founder of Ali Baba and the
leadership qualities he possessed. It describes the challenges faced by Jack Ma. The group
members were Yuen Yi, HO, Hamid, Ahmad, and Kat. We formed a group because of
similarities in perception and nature. I have used the inkblot personality test to analyze my
personality and filled the questionnaire of a charismatic leader (Antonakis and Day, 2017).
Reflection is an inter-subjective process that promotes deeper learning; it involves
consciously thinking about and analyzing what one has done. I have developed a reflective
model by consciously learning management and leadership skills to employ them in the
future. The leadership and the management style which will be covered under the main body
are transformational and transactional leadership, Charismatic leadership, the trait, and the
behavioral theories (Renko et al, 2015).
Main Body
I have learned from the concrete experience of completing the task along with the difference
in opinions of the group members. I realized that every human has a difference in perception
and have to work in a collaborative manner to complete the task efficiently. I felt that all the
people in the group members want to complete the task in their way which created conflicts
among themselves. I observed that all the members applied different styles and skills in
completing the task. However, the main focus was on to develop the skills that help in the
completion of the task (McIntyre, Dix, and Ward, 2018).

In the competition of the group task, I have realized that I have developed pragmatists
learning style because I believe in applying different approaches and theories to take the
required action. Moreover, believes in applying the different concept to accomplish the goal.
I have learned that the person must have the leadership traits to influence the actions of the
followers and must perform the duties with all honesty and integrity. By following up the
character of situational leadership, I acted according to the prevailing situation at a particular
point of time. While working on the presentation I have developed the characteristics of
behavioral theory to motivate and influence the team members and overcome the barriers
faced in the competition of the task (Mullins and Schoar, 2016).
In coordinating with the team members I have developed the quality of transactional and
transformational leadership as I was able to analyze the perceptions of the other members and
was responsive towards their needs. I possess the qualities of a great man leader because I am
able to influence members by having quality such as charisma, wisdom, and intelligence.
Moreover, I have also developed the quality of applying principles of scientific management
to progress the ways of achieving efficiency in the task. I was able to simplify the task of
each member of the team and effectively complete the presentation (Miles, 2012).
During the implementation of the task, I faced the personal disputes between the members
and their quality of a charismatic person. They believed that they are right and forced to take
actions according to their views. To overcome such barriers I provided the equal opportunity
to all the members in order to deliver their suggestions and have implemented their strategies
towards the assigned task. I have applied the transformational character of influencing the
members through my actions (Fincham and Rhodes, 2005).
Other than these, I have also applied principles of Taylorism by breaking the task into simpler
forms and developing the best method to complete the task. I focussed to develop

coordination among the team by defining the roles to each person and simplifying their task. I
have developed the style approach by focussing on completing the task and maintaining a
healthy relationship with the members of the group (Combe, 2014).
The main limitations from the application of such theories were the individualistic approach
and the wrong assumptions made by the members. Every member was focusing on their
performance rather than considering the group performance (Dubrin, 2016).
Application of the transformational leadership can create conflicts among the members as
they feel that I am not considering their decisions. The member’s started feeling that I am
prioritizing one member over the other and not making rational decisions. This created a lack
of communication and conflicts among the members (Witzel and Warner, 2013).
Conclusion
The key learning’s which I have gained from the group task is the development of qualities of
a charismatic leader and application of the transactional leadership to influence the members
and complete the task efficiently. While creating the presentation I realized to act according
to the prevailing situation and have the patience to effectively handle it. I got influenced by
the traits (refer to Appendix 2).
Moreover, from the above discussion, I have realized the importance of the development of
leadership and management skills to nurture future employability skills and become an
effective leader. From the discussion of the Jack Ma working style, I will develop the skills to
provide equal opportunity to all the members and deal with the complexities in an efficient
manner. Lastly, I have developed a career plan to be a famous leader who effectively
manages and develops the popular image in the country.
