INTRODUCTION
The management and operations is refers to management of raw materials into final
products to attain the maximum profits of the company. It also includes the designing and
manufacturing process according to the customer’s needs. In this, it helps the employees to
perform well in the company by performing their rules and regulations efficiently with in the
organisation. This will help the organisation to achieve the satisfaction level of customers which
enhance the business of the organisation (Gibson and Parkman, 2018). The chosen organisation
in this assignment is Sainsbury. This company is a UK based international company which retail
dealing in supermarkets and clothing products. In this assignment, the roles of a manger are
cover of the organisation. The different types of functions of leader are cover along with the
different management theories that are important in operations. Lastly, the impact of decisions
making of leaders and managers on organisation is also discussed.
TASK 1
1) An introduction to the chosen organisation and its management structure
Sainsbury is the largest chain of supermarket which includes clothing and groceries in the
UK. This company is founded in 1869 by establishing a shop but later on, it includes in retailing
of groceries in 1922. The products of this company is available across all countries by online.
The main business of this company is to dealing clothing and other products by establishing
supermarkets all across the world. There are approx 186,900 employees with in the company. I
the 2019, there arr approx 1428 stores are available in the country in which 820 are convenience
store and the rest of it are supermarkets (Hammer, 2015). The organisation follows hierarchical
structure in their company. In this structure, there are series of people occur which controls each
other. As each people have the responsibility of the above.
2) Definition and roles of both managers and leaders, highlighting the differences between
management and leadership.
The manager and leader plays an important role in mission and vision of the organisation.
They must have effective managing qualities so that they can attain required goals of the
company.

Manager:- They are the part of the company who manages the people and department of the
company. The managers controls the activities in the organisation so that the work done can be
occur as the requirements.
Role of managers:-
The role of managers includes to ensure about functioning of employees and departments
of the Sainsbury so that the required aim can be achieved (Heizer, Render and Munson,
2017).
It also includes to hire efficient employees so that they can bring changes and also help in
providing training programmes as per the requirements of the organisation.
Characteristic of manager:-
The manager of Sainsbury motivates the staff members so that they can bring
productivity in the company.
The person is confident and have time managing quality which helps in growth of the
organisation.
The characteristic of managers is to ensure about proper functioning of departments of
the company. They have some responsibilities by conducting trai8ning programmes in company
that can help in achieving goal of organisation.
Leaders:- It is defined as the capability of an person to motivate the group of persons so they can
perform well in the organisation (Ivanov, Tsipoulanidis and Schönberger, 2017). Their main aim
is to motivate people of all department of a company.
Role of leaders:-
The role of leader is to support the employees so they can work according the
requirements of Sainsbury. This result in enhancing the productivity which help in
gaining the profitability of the company.
Their work role includes to solve any kind of problems which may arise in group
members from which they can perform more efficiently in the organisation.
Characteristic of leaders:-
The leader has optimistic attitude towards the team mates from which they can fulfil the
requirements of the as per the goals decided.
They are capable to motivate the employees so they can work according to the
strategies of Sainsbury.

The management and leadership plays a vital role in growth of an organisation. They
control and manages the activities according to the requirement of the company. There are some
theories which support the company in achieving the goals.
Situational theory:- This theory refers to the changes that are adapt by employees that
occur due to some situations. The role of the managers is to manage the work accordingly to the
situation. For example:- if the situation arise that the Sainsbury need to manufactured the
products in given time so it is the responsibility of an manager to take decisions to achieve the
target goal. The role of leaders is to motivate and encourage the employees so they can attain the
goal as per the requirements of the company (McCrie, 2015). Sometimes manager adapt the
democratic style from which the employees can solve their problems. The leaders and managers
can use their leadership style by engaging the employees in their decision and by considering
their values. So the employees can work properly in order to produce new products. If the
managers and leaders are not able to solve the problems that they need to change their working
style in order to attain the required goals of the organisation.
Contingency theory:- This theory stated the condition of company that depends on the
internal and external situations. With in an organisation, there are lots of changes occur in
activities that are performed on a regular basis. For example, due to insufficient stock of raw
material of an urgent delivery can make over some problems in the organisation. The role of
managers is to manage the situation by making decision to purchase the raw materials from local
or other suppliers so the products can manufacture on time. The role of leader is to motivate the
workers so that they can complete the work as per the requirement of order.
System theory:- It is important for a company to follow a system from which the task
can be completed appropriately. In this, the management develop some strategies and condition
from which the employees can work properly at all level according to their potentiality. As an
example, the manager of Sainsbury sets the quality of raw materials so that the good quality of
raw materials can be used and best quality of products produced (Meredith and Shafer, 2019).
The role of leaders is to support team members and employees so they can maintain the quality
of products by adapting the system effectively. There are lots of changes occur in the inner
system of an organisation which impact on production of the company. The leaders can adapt

also use this from which efficiencies of employees can be increase in case of new technologies.
Relationship theory:- this theory refers to leaders from which they interact with people in
order to motivate them. They more interact with their employees in given time period so that

4) The strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to leadership and management
There are various approaches which are adapt by the Sainsburg so that the goals can be
accomplish. There are some strengths and weaknesses of approaches occur which are described
below.
Strength and weakness of situational approach
The strength of this theory is that it can be used in various training program from which
the employees can learn about decision-making and also enhance their skills. This theory can
easily applicable in various situations as it helps in placing the different types of leadership style
in different types of situation. With the help of this theory, the leaders including employees can
develop their skills by performing the tasks better. The flexibility occur from this theory in an
organisation as the employees can adapt the changes according to the needs of task. This will
help the Sainsbury to work in a flexibility manner and can help in attaining the required goals.
The weakness of this theory occur when the management and leadership lacks decisions
from which various problems arises (Song and Parola, 2015). The appropriate solution can not be
identified and this will effect the productivity of an organisation. There are various situation may
arise from which managers are not able to take decisions which results in increase of conflicts
between the employees. This will lead to low productivity of products of the organisation.
Strength and weakness of Contingency approach
The strength of this approach is to provide the ideas to leaders and managers so that they
can take decisions according to the occurrence of an event which occur at workplace. It helps the
managers to maintain the quality of product and to raise the growth of company.
Some problems may arises at the time of decision-making due to presence of contingent
condition. So it makes hard for the managers and leaders to take an effective decisions according
to the situations. The decisions of managers includes in making the new policies and plans
according to the conditions that arises.

company. With the help of different approaches, the managers can take effective decisions which
produce productivity of the Sainsbury. By applying different approaches, the managers can
control different operational activities which influence the success of the company. The leaders
can motivate employees so that they can perform their duties efficiently. This will make the
positive impact on the organisation by raising productivity of organisation. So both of them plays
a significant role in success of the organisation by achieving determined goals.
Recommendation for future improvements
It has been recommended from the above is that the organisation must plan various
training programmes in order to develop the skills and knowledge of employees.
The new policies and plans should implement with in the organisation so that the
new productivity can develop in the company.
The managers of the company should manages the situations by taking effective
decisions. They also should monitor the activity of employees so that they can help
employees in enhancing their skills and knowledge.
The leaders should encourage the employees so that they put their potential effort
and can perform effectively in the tasks.
