Jack Welch and his management style
The management style that was used by Jack Welch is a transformational management
style. His management style was direct and also employee centric. He knew how to manage his
members properly and set the goals and objectives in a very clear manner. He also helped his
employees by giving them all the possible support as and when needed. His management styles
were so popular and were so largely sought after that after he got retired from the General
Electronics he started an online all MBA course system called the Jack Welch Management
Institute. He was good at building trust within all his employees, and at the same time, they also
had to be direct. A true leader is one who will have to be direct and also transparent towards all
his employees. However, there has been criticism against his decisions as well. Larkin and Lee
(2017)) argued that Welch often took bad decisions because of which there was a huge cash
crunch, and all the stakeholders had to suffer from them.
Jim Collins, and his book Good to Great
Jim Collins talks about the different phases that must be followed by the companies to
successfully carry on their transformation from good to great companies (Collins, 2016). The 3
phases are disciple people, disciplined thought and also Disciplined Action. Thus he exhibits a
management style that is based on discipline. His management style is based on a method of the
constant improvement strategy. The book talks about a Flywheel that will keep on moving on a
constant basis.
