INTRODUCTION
Personal Leadership is considered as a central role which drives organization towards its
objectives. In Tesco, leader has to apply principles of leadership which will help the business to
extend its growth in making it successful. On the other hand, management deals in achieving
goals and objectives in an efficient and effective manner. Personal Leadership helps the
management to create a vision for future (Robbins and et.al., 2013). The firm undertaken in this
report is Tesco which is a British multinational grocery company and is considered as one of the
largest retailers in the world and it is the third largest enterprise in terms of revenue. This
Organization consists of wide-range of products with excellent quality and brand image. Tesco
has expanded its business around the world and it is currently having approx 6350 stores and
more than 5, 00,000 employees working in the company. This present report is based on
analyzing the impact of organizational objective on leadership and management role. Further, it
evaluates the personal leadership and management skills and identifies the development which is
required in achieving organizational objectives.
TASK 1Analyzing the impact of organization objectives, values and culture on leadership and
management role
The objectives, value and culture that is being followed by the firm causes necessary
impact upon the leadership and management. This is because, on the basis of given aspect only
the manager of Tesco has to carry out significant changes in its way of managing and dealing
with the people (Chhokar, Brodbeck and House, 2013). In this context, from the analysis it has
been identified that, Tesco has the major objective to provide best and high quality of services to
the buyers. The given objective of firm can be met if manager manages and leads its employees
in an effective way. This is because; it is by taking assistance from the workers only the best
quality of services can be delivered by the firm to its respective buyers. Thus, with an aim to
carry out best from the employees manager of Tesco have to use participate leadership skill in
which all the employees take part in decision making process (Goetsch and Davis, 2014). This
motivates the workers as they feel they are part of great family. In addition to this, by using the
given skill only opinions of the Tesco employees can be gathered regarding the skill which they
want to improve. Thus, by taking the appropriate action against the communicated skill the cited
objective of firm can be met.

Furthermore, Tesco gives values to the given aspect such as treating people how we like
to be treated ourselves. The given value of the firm forces the manager to carry out significant
improvement in the interpersonal skill (Chen and et.al., 2014). It is due to the fact that, with the
help of this skill needs and demands as being communicated by the customers can be effectively
met. Likewise, type of culture followed by the firm also causes necessary impact upon the
leadership and management role. For example, Tesco compliance with the person culture forces
the manager or leader to use more supportive approach while dealing with employees
(Townsend‐White, Pham and Vassos, 2012). Moreover, if Tesco comply with the task culture at
that time, manager has to play the role of director. This is because, it is the type of culture in
which employees has the major goal to accomplish the task which is being assigned to them. In
order to perform the same, they would require guidance and support from the manager (Dubrin,
2015).
Evaluating leadership and management skills to support achievement of organizational
objectives
By adopting suitable and specific leadership skills Tesco can achieve its organizational
objectives. For every business entity, there is a person who is responsible for all the activities
which are happening within the organization i.e. Managers require definite skills in carrying out
duties and actions. These skills are generally scientific, individual and conceptual. Scientific or
technical skills include information about a specialized field like computer, accounting,
administrative and accounting within Tesco (Farok and Garcia, 2015). Individual skills can be
regarded as working and helping other employees and dealing with the workers. . Furthermore,
managers having superior individual skills are capable in extracting best from the employees (Hu
and et.al., 2012). Conceptual skills show as how managers think and resolve the entire problem
and overcome difficult situations within the organizations.
There are several leadership and management skills which help in achieving
organizational goals and objectives. These skills are possessed by the management of Tesco.
Leader or manager has to understand Tesco's goals first and then only they can implement
various skills and techniques to achieve those goals. Manager need to have qualities and
leadership skills to perform well and they must know how to control employees within the

leadership styles to manage their employees
There are many management skills which can be adopted by Tesco’s top level
management to improve efficiency of Tesco. These are Effectiveness Communication and
Interpersonal skills (Fullan, 2014). Effectiveness skills shows that, manager is concentrated in
achieving organizational goals and focus on client, Communication skills have the capability to
convert the idea into work performance as it helps managers or leaders to get feedback from their
workers At last, interpersonal skills assist managers in training and mentoring as well as
provide networking within the Tesco in order to work in groups.
For the purpose of achieving organizational objectives, it is necessary for Tesco to adopt
bureaucratic style of leadership.
Bureaucratic Style- Under this, leaders will make clear and intelligible policies for their
employees in order to follow procedures precisely. It is also beneficial for manpower that
performs routine tasks (Fisher and Briel, 2012). It is based on fixed duties under a hierarchy of
authority which based on applying rules for management and decision making. Administrative
and management tasks are drop down into few hands who will lead to authority, responsibility
and accountability
Tesco must implement a bureaucratic style to achieve business goals as this style
understands business objectives, values, culture and also employee’s requirement as they can
achieve self objectives.
Highly structured nature of bureaucratic leadership enables the management of Tesco to
oganise the work in different functional areas and division in systematic and planned manner.
This leadership style functions on principle of decentralization of work that is assigning duties
and responsibilities to employees that are expertise in their areas. This helps in accruing lucrative
results and benefits to organization with the perfect management. This style is best suited for
large organizations like Tesco. At the same place, there are some drawbacks of Bucratic style or
leadership as decentralization is done only in the context of duties and responsibilities not in
power. Due to less people-oriented nature, it hinders the inculcation of creative and innovative
ways to resolve problems and obstacles comes in company's operations in different fields.

Assessing personal leadership and management skills to achieve organizational objectives
I have carried out assessment of my own personal leadership and management skill
which will enable me to attain the Tesco objective which is being specified in above question. In
accordance with the given context, I have good motivational skill which I use in the situation at
the time when the employees of the Tesco highly demotivated (Fisher and Briel, 2012). It is with
the help given skill only; I can be able to enhance the motivation of workers in the situation of
heavy workload. In addition to this, I have good planning and problem solving skill. Here, with
the help of planning skill, I can prepare appropriate plans to maintain the satisfaction of the
respective buyers in an effective manner. Thus, by complying with the given type of activity
only, the Tesco objective of giving the best quality of services to the workers can be met in an
effective way. Likewise, I can recommend appropriate and timely solution to the problem which
is being communicated by the Tesco workers by using problem solving skill.
Besides this, there are some skills assessed in which I found myself ineffective. It is due
to the presence of given aspect, sometimes I face difficulty in terms of attaining given objective
of firm in an effectual way (Goetsch and Davis, 2014). The skills that I would like to develop or
improve are time management, communication and negotiation skill.
Assessing opportunities for developing leadership and management skills
In my views, top management in an organization needs to develop criteria for assessing
effectiveness of leadership and management staff so that, organization can move towards
success. (Moran, Abramson and Moran, 2014). There are various ways by which skills can be
accessed and developed. Majorly, it is done through training and development, friends and
relatives and also by using case studies and observations. In this regard, there are various
opportunities available in market that I can utilize to carry out significant development in the
assessed personal leadership and management skill in which I am having certain problem. The
detailed description regarding the identified opportunities is depicted in below: To prepare the skill chart: I have the opportunity to prepare my own personal skill
development chart. This chart will give detailed description regarding the area in which I
am lacking. In addition to this, it is with the help of given chart only, I assess and target
the particular management and leadership skill. For example, on the basis of analysis I
have assessed that, I do not possess good communication skill. In this regard, it is

analyzed that, the communication is very broad concept as it have several types such as
verbal and non verbal etc. Thus, with the help of skill chart, I can target the specific type
of communication skill which requires improvement. Attending the training programs: It is another method which I can employ with an aim to
carry out significant development in the assessed leadership and management skill. In
accordance with the given context, I can select and join those training programs which
are being organized by the government of country. Thus, through this way only I can
improve varied type of skills. Reading books and articles: I have the opportunity to read the books and articles which
are being written by famous authors. For instance, I want to improve ways of negotiating
with the people. Thus, in order to improve the same, I can read the book related to the
negotiation. By performing the given type of activity, I can deliver my best services to
the firm like Tesco. This will result in increased profits and sales in an effective way.
 Attending conferences and seminars: Finally, I have the chance to attain the conference
and seminar which is being organized by the company. Overall, it can be said that, with
the help of all these given approaches I can perform necessary improvements in the
assessed ineffective skills.
Constructing personal development plan to develop leadership and management skills
In my opinion, constructing personal development plan with clear objectives help the
organization in developing leadership and management skills (Landsberg, 2015). In order to
carry out improvements in personal leadership and management skill, I have prepared my own
personal development plan. It is depicted in the below given table.

long term business goals can be achieved. As per the above objective it is necessary to increase
time management skills, communication skills and negotiation skills. It is essential in retail
organization like Tesco that work should be divided in teams which as it will assist in making
effective decisions (Daft, 2014). This will support democratic leadership style within Tesco.
While working in a team it is necessary for leaders and managers to evaluate performance and
increase their decision making ability. By considering this, manager of Tesco will be able to get
idea about team members and their skills (Robbins and et.al., 2013.).

The second objective of a plan is to develop communication skills as manpower at times
might face problem in speaking English. . So, manager or leader has to participate in training
programs so that, they can develop habit of speaking English. For developing personal skills,
individual is required work on its reading. Next objective is to increase negotiation skills which
manager or leader can learn through experience. But in order to get this knowledge, it is
important for manager to participate in training and development programs because it will help
in enhancing thinking ability. Managers can also increase their skills by going through different
types of negotiation case studies. In addition to this, manager can also improve the given skill by
conducting role playing activity. .
Development plan as stated above includes democratic, communicating and negotiable
skills which should be aligned with the entire developmental aspect of organization. Plan should
first do self evaluation to find weakness and other areas which needs development (Day and
et.al., 2014). After implementation, managers have to practice within business enterprise and
find out the errors in the development plan.
In a firm like Tesco with the large family of employees, customers and suppliers, it is
very essential to undergo effective personal development plan to enhance leadership and
management skills. It is imperative to develop efficient communication skills to consolidate
larger stream of customers, trading partners and suppliers with the organization. Communication
manifests both verbal and written. Improved communication skills results enhanced relational
constructs and profitability. Efficient time management enables senior officials of Tesco to
mange slew of tasks and work in structured manner. Improper communication and time
management hinders the growth and development of organization. As it can lead to task
processed in haphazard manner, that results in decreased efficiency and profitability.
TASK 4
Reviewing personal development plan against original objectives
The plan that I have framed is according to the original objective. In accordance with the
given context, my first objective is to improve time management skill. In order to improve the
given objective, 6 months’ time will be consumed by me. . Here, the time in which I will have to
improve my skill is not sufficient as I will spend this whole tenure in the process of attending the
training and development programs. In addition to this, I have another goal that is to carry out

improvements in the communication skill. In this regard, I have read varied books and articles.
Here, with the help of this activity I have found significant improvements in verbal
communication skill. But, I am still facing some problem in the situation where I will have to use
my facial expression and gestures to communicate with other individual. Thus, I require some
more time to improve the given skill. In addition to this, I have aim to amend negotiation skill. I
have found major improvements in the given skill and it is possible because of the available
approach.
Evaluate effectiveness of personal development of leadership and management skills
It is utmost necessary to evaluate effectiveness of personal development plan and it can
be done by using various techniques and methods. To analyze democratic leadership skills it is
essential for the manager or leader to focus on team work activities and should welcome the
decisions of team members so that most effective decisions can be made. Further, he need to
calculate how many products have been sold within a given time period. . Manager can also refer
to case studies based on democratic leadership styles to improve its efficiency (Lussier and
Achua, 2015). Further leader can implement these case studies and see the response and changes
visible in Tesco's members.
When communication skills are implemented, managers starts getting feedback from
consumers and on basis of this, Tesco will be able to find its progress, weak as well as its strong
areas. At the same moment, leader will also get feedback from superiors and subordinates and
through this he can analyze the improvement in the skill. (Lussier and Achua, 2015).
Analyzing areas for further development and update personal development plan
After conducting and implementing personal development plan, managers will further
find more weak areas which are related with the personal development plan (Dubrin, 2015).
Thus, it is by complying with the given type of activity only, managers makes efforts in terms of

Tesco's objective. Personal development plan has been constructed to develop leadership and
management skills by using democratic leadership skills, communication skills and leadership
skills. Lastly, personal development plan has been reviewed in comparison with original
objective of Tesco and the areas were analyzed for further development by using case studies
and attending public group..
