INTRODUCTION
Nursing leadership can be defined as the process of influencing others so that high quality
of care can be provided to individuals, along with direct participation in clinical care. Nursing
leadership includes and works in an environment which has clear vision and also the staff
members are skilled so that better services can be provided to patients. The role of leadership
in nursing is really important as this will assist in enhancing patient’s safety and also it assists in
enhancing patient’s health and well-being. Present report will lay emphasis on role of
registered nurse in prioritising care and delegation of task. It will also provide details related to
application of NMBA registered nursing standards for providing safe and quality care.

Leadership plays an important role in the field of nursing and in the work of registered
nurse. This is because leadership will act as a direction over which nurse have to perform the
duties and handle the emergency situation. In short leadership will act as a framework which
will moult the entire working of a nurse. Through leadership in nursing, nurses will not only able
to perform their duties but at the same time they can also take best moves to take care the
health of their patients (Duffey, (2017). Leadership will give a direction by which nurses will
plan their scheduled plan of work that from where they have to start right from collecting and
examining treatment result till managing patient's medical situation.

Leadership plays an important role in the field of nursing. This is because as under
leadership directions are provided that will lead to accomplishment of objective. Similarly,
implementation of leadership in nursing will help in prioritizing the task and as a result the
health of the patient will not suffer (Lunden, (2017). As Scott Mawson has recently finished
graduation and leading or supervision Casey Aged Care Home. Since, for leading and
supervising it is very essential to incorporate the essence of leadership in the working. As Mr
Scott is having a charge of duty of Easter which is a national holiday. So for performing the task
it is very essential that proper synchronization of activities has to be done. This means, on the
Easter situation of emergency has come where Mr Davis was affected from the symptom of
dementia and found unsettled. In order to deal with that Mr Scott, have to appoint a
permanent nurse and one second year nursing student so that continuous monitoring of the
situation will be possible. Likewise, in order to meet the daily routine activities including giving
of showers, serving meals, performing medication, monitoring insulin, serving breakfast and
lunch on time, Mr Scott can delegate the duties to one second year nursing student and 2
personal care workers so that routine work will not being affected and it will be performed
smoothly. As Easter is a national holiday so in order to meet the emergency situation regarding
Mrs Merkel who was in room 13 and having a history of UTI out of eight personal care workers
1 personal care work will be assigned so that not only the situation will be managed but further
occurrence of emergency will also be protected.

As Mr Macquarie is having a severe back pain problem which is very essential to be
attended by 930 so before assigning the duties MR Scott have to prioritize this emergency by
assigning 1 nurse for them. So that without arisen of emergency Mr Macquarie will be attended
at the scheduled time. In the same way as Mr Macron is expecting a call from niece who was in
France. So Mr Scott have to look that in comparison of handling other routine and emergency
situation this task will be given less priority because handling of emergency situation is more
important as compared to having a call to niece. However, in at the last the remaining personal
healthcare worker will be appointed to perform other routine work in addition of handling any
future emergency situation. Thus, through the implementation of leadership roles Mr Scott will
not only manage the work or supervision but at the same time emergency situation will also be
meet. In addition, of this with adequate delegation of duties to staff Mr Scott without having a
worry made a clear supervision over all the activities that no task should be left out and every
situation will be handled in desired manner.
Scott needs to be engaged in making sure that he takes responsibilities for actions which
is been taken by him. The prioritisation of patient is an advanced skill. In the present case
situation Scott will be engaged in making use of ABC concept so that the patient who requires
nursing attention more is been attended first. The assessment and analysis is main part which is
been used for making major decisions (Balsanelli, David & Ferrari, (2018). In present case
situation Scott will be engaged in making their team handle Davis first as he is going through
symptoms of dementia and has felt drowsy on lounge. He needs continuous monitoring and
support. The other prioritisation which will be done will be of Mr Macquarie. This is because he
is going through intense pain and also he should be attended on timely manner as the well-

being of patient can be affected because of this. The concept of Maslow hierarchy of needs can
also be used by Scott for prioritising of care. According to this triangle if the basic needs re not
been met then the higher needs cannot be fulfilled. Safety and psychological needs are one of
the most important basic needs which needs to be fulfilled. It is a human need made triangle
which can be used for analysing demands of patients. The third priority of Scott will be checking
and controlling BGL of all residents and providing them with meals.
Application of the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice in identifying leadership
responsibilities in the safe and quality care
In the present case situation, it has been analysed that Scott is working as nurse leader as
everyone else are on Easter holiday. Scott witnessed that one of their resident Davis is suffering
from behavioural and psychological symptoms of Dementia. He also witnessed that Mr. Merkel
was also due for IDC change. So in these certain case related situation various nursing standards
must be used by Scott so that safe and high quality of care can be provided to patients. It
includes the following:
The Standard 1 provides details that RN needs to be engaged in thinking critically and
analysing the situation. Like in present case situation Scott must be involved in making sure that
the highest priority must be handled first (Waite & Nardi, (2019). He should be engaged in
sending team for handing David situation and then make sure that all residents BGL and meals
are timely been done. This will assist in contributing to quality improvement and relevant
research.
The standard 3 lays emphasis on maintain the capability for practice. In this the standard
3.1 has elaborated that RN needs to be engaged in providing services to patients at timely

manner so that health and well-being of patients is being improvised (Murray, (2017). Like in
this case situation Scott must make sure that Mr Macquarie is been handled on timely manner
as they are suffering from acute pain and then Davis must be looked upon so that their health
and wellbeing can be enhanced and improved. Then Scott needs to make sure that Mr. Macron
is been taken into consideration so that he can be able to talk with his niece. This will assist in
enhancing patient’s conditions. The standard 3.4 has also explained that nurses must be held
accountable for their actions and the responsibility which has been taken by them (Miles &
Scott, (2019).
Standard 4 provides details that comprehensive assessment must be done so that better
care can be provided. 4.1 provides information that holistic and culturally appropriate care
must be given so that it can enhance wellbeing. It has been analysed that Scott must make sure
that all residents to whom meals and monitoring is being done should be done holistically, so
that they also do not face any type of health related difficulty. It is really necessary to be done.
CONCLUSION
From the above report it has been summarised that prioritisation and taking responsibility
is one of the most essential aspects in nursing leadership. There have been various standards
which is being followed by nurses so that health and well-being of patient can be improved. It
has also been analysed that timely and holistic care is been given to patients so that their well-
being can be enhanced. The nurses have been engaged in providing person centred care.
Professional therapeutic relationships are being maintained so that wellbeing can be enhanced.
This has assisted in improvising patient’s quality of life.
