INTRODUCTION
Operation management is the practice to increase the efficiency of the existing resource
to get the maximum output within the organisation. It is a matter of converting material and
labour into goods and services in an efficient, so that organisation can earn maximum profit
(Battaïa and et. al., 2018). It involves the planning, organizing, directing and controlling all the
resources of the organisation, which are needed for the production process. Operational
management include Product management, Supply chain, Inventory, Forecasting, Scheduling
and Quality of the product. In this report Aldi is the chosen organisation owned by two German
families. It is discounted supermarket chains currently operating over 10,000 stores in 20 nations,
and an estimated combined turnover of more than €50 billion. Its headquartered is located in
Germany. and the report will cover the roles and characteristic of leaders and manager. It also
includes various theories and model of leadership approaches and role of leaders and manager in
operational management. Furthermore, Report will explain the importance and values of
operating management in achieving business goal and the factors which impact on the
operational management and decision making by leader and managers.
TASK 1
P1 Roles and characteristics of a leader and a manger with their comparison.
A leader is a person convince other people to follow their actions in order to achieve the
specific goal. A leader comes first in a line to execute their followers and this process is called
leadership. It is the ability to build confidence among people to motivate them to follow their
actions. A good leader will achieve a desirable action from their subordinates. There are two
types of leaders, Formal leader is one who is created by formal structure and elected by the
persons. It has the responsibilities of fulfilling the demands of the company, while on other hand
leader is supposed to guide and direct their subordinates. Informal leaders are not formally
elected, got the opportunities from their influencers to lead them (Dahlgaard-Park, Reyes and
Chen, 2018).
Characteristic of a Leader:
Honesty and Integrity- This is the moral duty of a leader to be honest with their
subordinates and have some integrity to be loyal to everyone in the organisation.
Good Communicator- A leader should have good and clear communication for the
explanation of every action in context of goal achievement of the organisation.

Provide a vision- this is the foremost duty of leader to give the vision to their employees
and for the organisation in order to work in a centric manner.

Comparison between a leader and a manager:
A manager is one who give the code of conduct and made all the rules and polices foe
their employees in order to achievement of their goal but the leader is a one who implement and
direct the certain polices. And motivate their employees to do the right action with the
consideration of profit maximization.

In today's competitive world it is very important to modify the role of leaders and
functions of the manger in dynamic environment. This will assist the management and the
administration of Aldi UK to retain potential staff members for longer time period which is a
positive sign for the company. In order survive in the competitive world, both leaders and
managers assist the company to survive by performing their duties (Hogg, 2017). The managers
and leaders of Aldi UK needs to focus on executing theories as per situation demand as

below points:
Condition 1: Potential staff members’ turnover ratio reduced
The Aldi UK implement relationship oriented approaches so that it can reduce raising
number of potential staff members. This helps in building strong and healthy relations within the
workforce so that employees can work day and night to meet their desire goals in this intense
competitive world. Additionally, market value helps in increasing goodwill of the company in
the eyes of the customers (Krishnamurthy, Lamba and Singh, 2017).

because they work to formulate different tactics as per their situation. However, a leader and
manager play diverse roles and functions in order to survive the competition. Their roles are
discussed below-
Role of leader:
Whenever within an organization any changes take place, the main role of leader is to
motivate the workforce to adopt to new change so that smooth functioning is ensured.
Also it helps in assuring the skilled staff about the various benefits which they will get
after bring modern techniques and tools in their workplace (Manzini and et. al., 2018).
Before executing any modern machinery in Aldi UK, the manager formulate different
and strong techniques it can successfully execute them in the workplace. Managers focus

is best or cannot stick to one approach. Leader will adapt the approach according to the
situation and essential factors like type of task, nature of group many more will
contribute to the task done in the organisation. A good leader is one who adapt a suitable
and best leadership approach and work according to that approach in order to solve a
specific problem (Sawathsangson and Bunchpattanasakd, 2020). For example, if the Aldi
UK uses this leadership approach then it will be best fit in every situation because
adjusting themselves according to the environment and situation. This will help in

in order to improve the quality of the product and services. It involves modification in their
product according to time. According to this approach company provide updated product to
match the current trends of the marketplace. Aldi UK adopts this approach to get advantages of
current trendy product to their customers and increase their sale by offering modified products in
the market. This approach will help the company to build good brand image with maximum
revenue (Valliappan and Sadek, 2016).

Ethics- This is the code of conduct of the individual than reflect the decision making of
leader and a manager. It is the moral behaviour of the individual that reflect someone
actions. Aldi UK is following all the code of conduct and value the ethics of customers
in consideration of profitability of the organisation.
Corporate social responsibilities- This is the duty of the organisation to do the CSR
activity for the betterment of the society. CSR is a social activity that concern with the
something is have to be contributed by the company for the welfare of the society. In this
Aldi UK company should offer better quality good at fair price and also taking positive
measures to protect the environment. Furthermore, organisation will contribute to
increase the standard of living in the society by proving proper remuneration to their

technological factor have positive impact on the company and political factor have negative
