Indra Nooyi is a successful leader, and she used her skills and knowledge to expand
the operations of PepsiCo by making it second largest food and beverage business globally.
Nooyi’s career matches with the leadership pipeline model; she started her career as a
product manager for Johnson and Johnson and Mettur Beardsell, a textile firm in India. In
this period, she contributed in determining how to manage products and sell them to
customers (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy, 2014). She was first line supervisor in these positions
where she learns how to manage herself and others effectively. In mid-level manager
position, she gains experienced in the Boston Consulting Group after which she become
functional leader in Motorola and Asea Brown Boveri. In the spin-off of Tricon, Nooyi played
a crucial role as business unit leader, and she played the role of group manager by forming
Yum! Brands Inc. and acquiring Tropicana and Quaker Oats. She became CEO of PepsiCo in
2006 after which she had expanded its business in international markets and addressing
issues such as restoring its public image in India which highlights her leadership skill ( Geer-
Frazier, 2014). Therefore, Nooyi’s career matches up to the leadership pipeline, and it
assisted her in becoming a competent leader. Three things which Nooyi learn as CEO of
PepsiCo include sticking to your guns even in adverse market conditions, for instance, she
restored PepsiCo image in India rather than changing its business strategy. Second learning
is brutal honestly; Nooyi looks at things from both perspectives before making decision
(Chitnis, 2018). Lastly, she learned to be herself which enable her to work with people who
followed her till the end.
