Management in context
Effective communication and practical problem solving
It is necessary for managers to have effective communication and problem solving
skills such that the employees can get job satisfaction and for the purpose of reducing the gap
between the employees and the management (Certo, 2003). Therefore I also need to develop
these skills for becoming a good manager. I have been faced with a lot of issues due to lack
of proper communication and therefore I understand the importance of developing effective
communication and problems solving skills.
Roles of management
The term management refers to the coordination and organization of different
activities in order to achieve some defined objectives (Augier & Teece, 2009). Management
is important because of the role that it has. It helps in planning, organizing, staffing, directing
and controlling for improving the organizational efficiency. This topic is relevant to me such
that I can understand the roles and responsibilities of management. In my past, I have been
engaged in planning activities therefore for becoming a good manager I need to be able plan,
organize, staff, direct and control.
Challenges faced by managers
Managers have to face a number of challenges due to the changing business
environment such as workplace diversity, change and innovation and others. Moreover the
managers also need to align the employee goals with the organizational goals. This topic is
relevant to me as it can help me in developing and growing myself by overcoming a number
of challenges and improving my knowledge about the same.

Motivation and influence
Motivation, influence and power and politics
The term motivation refers to the desire to do something or not to do something. And
influence on the other hand means the impact of an event, person or idea upon the desires to
do something (Cruz, Pérez & Cantero, 2009). And the terms power and politics in
organizational context includes influencing and controlling the group members. The topic of
motivation and power is relevant to me because it can help me in influencing my team
members and also avoiding any conflicts and for improving the efficiency of my employees.
In my past, I had been a part of team where there was lack of motivation and therefore I
understand the importance of motivation of employees (Mezirow,1998). Therefore with the
help of relevant knowledge, I will be able to influence the behaviour of my team members
with the help of proper reward and recognition.
Communication, conflict and negotiation
Conflict and negotiation refers to the clash of interests that arises between two
different parties due to differences in attitudes, though process and also perceptions
(Edelmann, 1993). I feel that the topic is relevant as conflicts are a common phenomenon and
therefore with the knowledge I can be able to handle conflict situations in a better way. I have
been faced with issues related to conflicting interest, lack of influence and motivation in the
past. I had been a part of the team where there was lack of any alignment between the
individual gaols and the organizational gaols which again led to conflict between the parties.
I have understood the various concepts related to conflict and negotiation (Edelmann, 1993).
And with the help of these concepts, I feel that I will be able to become a good leader.
