Introduction
Management is an important function to run a business or organization effectively and
efficiently. Management is a long process which includes many functions and communication is
one of the important functions of management (Griffin, 2012, p. 4). To share all the information
with the employees of organization, managers use communication function that called
managerial communication. Communication is very helpful to transfer the information from one
person to another (Tofanelli, 2012, p. 19).
If employees do not communicate with each other in an organization, then that
organization has to face many problems because organization is a group of individuals in which
they work together to achieve organizational objectives (Austin, 2015, p. 8). The report
discussed about how to manage people and organization. In the following scenario, it is assumed
that Sam is working in a small organization. In this framework, manager should maintain good
communication with his employees consequently that Employees could share their work
problems with him. This report will describe about the management concept which help to
improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization.
Overview of Case Study
Sam is a manager for small size organization who is appointed recently for this job. Now
his job is very tough and crucial because his team members are busy with their personal works
and problems. The scenario portrays that the manager Sam’s way of communication and
confidence level is very low. But he has to discuss the new project with his team members but
every team member has their different weak points. No one is showing their interest in the
project but as per the instructions given by executive manager Chris, this project is very
important for the business.
Main issues which are mentioned in this case study:
Lack of confidence

Less motivation

Advice
The manager should improve his own communication and managerial skills thus all the
employees can get benefit from these skills. Besides it, manager should divide the work equally
thus work’s pressure does not come on any single employee but all employees can get work in
equal part. Such as in this scenario, Anne was overloaded with work because Megan was on
maternity leave and in this situation, Sam should give equal responsibility of the work to every
employee. Thus, Anne does not get pressure of work on her and she can pay attention to the new
project. Employees should get motivation and appreciation from senior authority time to time
and they should be trained properly.

There are many management theories that suggest communication is an important
function for organization as well as training and motivation is a way to maintain the efficiency
and effectiveness of the organization (Iloafu, 2016, p. 94).
Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs
This management theory is a motivational theory which involves five types of human
needs. According to the author, it is very important to fulfill employees’ basic needs to maintain
the productivity of employees and it also motivates the employees (Oved, 2017, pp. 537-538).
The author Maslow displayed his theory as a pyramid which starts from the lower level that is
basic needs. Basic requirements comprises of food, sleep, water and warmth. Employees are
motivated by a hierarchy of needs (Thielke, et al., 2012). As per the theory, Sam should
recognize the needs of employees.
Maslow suggested that motivation is the aftereffect of an individual's effort at satisfying
five essential needs: physiological, wellbeing or safety, social, esteem and self-actualization. As
per Maslow, these necessities can make internal pressure which can impact an individual's
behavior.

new in the team. She was not trained well by the manager. Maslow’s theory suggests that every
employee have esteem need in which employee want growth. To fulfill this need, manager
should give proper training to the employees which help them to progress in the organization.
Henri Fayol’s five rules of Management
Henri Fayol suggests five important functions or rules of management which are based on his
experience. As per this theory, the manager should plan, organize. Lead and control the
organization (Godwin, Handsome, Ayomide, Enobong, & Johnson, 2017, pp. 78-85). These four
are the essential rules of management. The first and most important function is planning.
To make accurate plan manager needs to follow some steps which are:
Collect the information regarding work
Analyze that information
Determine different actions and choose the best one
Develop some other plans
Implement and follow up that plan
After making plan, the next function is organizing. In this function, Sam should organize
everything as per the plan. There is no place for confusions, misunderstandings and disloyalty in
an effective organization. Commanding is also an important function to perform (Chartered
Management Institute, 2012). In this function, Sam should understand the team members and
handle every situation very smartly (Uzuegbu & Nnadozie, 2015, pp. 58-72). This function
motivates the employees. Maintain harmony in work is essential for success of business and
company. To make harmony, coordination is necessary because coordination ensure that all

common goal (Burney & Widener, 2013, p. 115). In this scenario, Sam needs to maintain the
harmony in organization.
According to the theory, direct coordination among manager and employees helps to
avoid confusions, misunderstandings and conflicts (Simms, 2009, pp. 349-363). And in this case,
