INTRODUCTION
Management is the activity of dealing with or controlling things or people. Operation is the area
of management which is associated with the process of controlling and designing the process of
production and manufacturing in the organization. Operations and management ensures that the
operations carried out in an organization makes use of resources efficiently and effectively.
Operations produce products, manage quality and creates service. Present study will lay
emphasis on Google. It is the American multinational company that deals in services which is
internet related. The services provided by them is online advertising, search engine, cloud
computing software and hardware (Shimojo and et.al., 2015). Report will provide the differences
between role of leader and managers. It will also focus on the role of leader and manager in
different situational context. Study focuses on the different approaches of operations
management. It will also provide the importance of operations management in business

P1. Different roles and characteristics of leaders and managers
Leader- A leader is a person who is engaged in the activity of influencing and motivating
people. This individual holds a superior position in the organization.. They are also seen as the
idol by their followers. Leaders in Google are the person who provide support to the other
employees. They assist other employees and their team members in improving their performance
by providing them constant motivation. Leaders make use of open communication so that they
can easily understand the needs and demands of team members in the firm. Google have the
most fascinating leaders because of which the rate of turnover in company is very low.
Managers- A manager in a company can be defined as a person who is involved in
managing various activities in the organization. The activities can include handling of human
resources, promoting the products and services of firm can also act as a negotiator (Alharbi and
Raahemifar, 2015). Google is involved in hiring those managers who are responsible for
overseeing a department or a group of employees.. Managers of Google are engaged in providing
training to workers and employees so that they can enhance their skills which can help them in
outshining their career. This also supports organization in retaining the workers and attracting
new and efficient employees. Managers are also involved in monitoring and controlling the
expenses and budgets. They provide motivation to workers and employees by giving them
monetary and non-monetary incentives. This assists Google in reducing employee turnover.

employees or management of the firm. They make better relationship through open

Google has to follow the advancing technology, in order to gain the competitive advantage. The
new business world is made up of connected device, secured connections and artificial
intelligence that provides solutions to various problems.
Functions of leader- The leaders of Google has the most important role, when the organization
is going to change the technology. They are engaged in providing more flexibility to their
workers and team members whenever these types of changes happen in the company. A leader
now has the most wide-reaching channels of communication available. They can influence their
employees, motivate their sales teams, build customer loyalty and connect with peers through
various social media platforms and blogging (Gu, Li and He, 2015).
Functions of managers- Managers of Google are involved in providing training to the workers
on the new technology, software or hardware installed. This will support employees in
performing better on the new techniques used. Training on these things can also remove the
frustration of workers which can come because of the changes. It can also motivate and support
workers to perform better (Marzband and et.al, 2016). This increases their efficiency to work.

the efficient and skilled employees. This increases the operational efficiency of firm.
Labour turnover- This is a situation where the employees or workers are leaving the
organization either because of conflict or dis-satisfaction with the management. A company
which high level of employee turnover faces the cost of recruiting and hiring the employees. This
situation can reduce the profitability aspects of Google.
Functions of leader- Retaining employees is one of the most important role for the Leader of
Google. Workers can be retained by leaders through motivating them, inspiring them and
appraising them. Also leaders make use of communication, so that they can analyse the needs
and demands of workers so that they can fulfil them. This can assist them in reducing the
employee turnover in Google. Motivated employees create a sense of belongingness in the firm.
So improved relationship between leaders and team workers can reduce the attrition rate.
Functions of manager- Employees who are uncertain about the future of the company may
leave the organization, so managers have the role to provide them with clear vision and mission.
This assists them in reducing the turnover rate in Google. A vision sets out the company’s future
direction and the employee’s place in the company, helping to dispel rumours and other
misinformation that can destabilize a workforce. Employees can also leave the company because
of the unclear roles and objectives, so manager has the role to provide them with clear mission.
This can support them in staying motivated (Van Dooren, Bouckaert and Halligan, 2015).
Conflict- Situation of conflict in Google can arise because of the miss-communication, dis-
satisfaction or no support from the management. In this type of situation, the employees
generally leave the firm. When this situation arises the good will of the firm can get hamper and
also the brand image can be hampered.
Functions of leader- Leader of Google has the main role to accommodate with the situation.
They are engaged in creating the better environment for the employees of Google. Mostly open

Situational leadership- Situational leadership is that type of approach in which leaders

employees and supports them to perform better in Google. It creates an environment which is
productive (Chopra and Meindl, 2016). In this type of leadership, the leaders and managers have

made by them. In this type of leadership, the workers simply do what is been asked from them..
This can also help them to retain the employees in the firm.
System leadership- Systems Leadership enables the leaders in an organisation to create
the conditions where people at all levels can work productively to their potential (Ferguson,
2018). It uses sound principles about human behaviour to create models of good leadership,
organisational strategy, systems design and social process. In this type of leadership, the leaders
and managers of Google has the role to motivate employees working at all levels. In this type of
approach, the leaders and managers ask the employees to choose the task they want to perform.
They delegate responsibilities to them. Also they are assigned with the role to make the workers
more responsible and confident. Delegating responsibility can develop the confidence in them.
Contingency leadership – Contingency leadership theory is associated with where the
leadership styles matches with the situation and is correct. Contingency Theory of leadership
says that a leader must be able to identify which management style will help. achieve the
organization's goals in a particular situation. It can also assist the leaders and managers in
making the work better of all the employees working in Google. The leaders and managers of
Google also have the responsibility to provide bonus to the employees and motivate them to
meet the sales goals. Leaders and managers also assist the team workers in achieving the

From the above study, it has been summarised that leaders and mangers assist the
organization in improving the quality and services of the products and services. Thy also
supported the organization in overcoming the various situations that includes technological
changes, labour turnover and conflict. The organization has also made use of total quality
management to enhance the quality and making effective utilization of resources. Also leaders
and managers has motivated workers to perform better. They have motivated them by giving
monetary and non monetary incentives.
