1- WHICH STORE MANAGER- PHILLIP JORDAN OR JAN WHITALL WOULD YOU
PREFER WORKING FOR? HOW DID EACH LEADERS STYLE IMPACT THE CULTURE OF

THE PER STORE? EXPLAIN

Jan Whitfall was a woman of order and discipline as on the very first day of her hob role she

has made an announcement that new compensation policies will be strictly followed in the

store and the wages of few people will be reduced based on the pay scales. She has fired an

employee just in a month because of violating the return policies. One of the other

employees was reprimanded because of providing a sample of new organic pet food to the

customer before purchasing it. The culture of the store vanished as the employee became

indignant and bristled. The style of the Whitfall was strict and autocratic and she felt proud

to stand up to the expectations of District Manager (Romager, et al. 2017).

The culture of the store under the Phillip Jordan was quite friendly as the workers loved to

come to a store and deal in a friendly manner with the customers. Jordan supports the

employees’ decision to grant the refund to the employees and would bend some policies of

the store to retain their loyal customers. The employees of the organization were

encouraged to think independently when it comes to meet the needs of the customers. In

this culture every employee was helpful to each other, everybody has a cheerful attitude

and they have been rewarded by the manager (Anderson and Sun, 2017).

So, I would like to work under Phillip Jordan in the cheerful, friendly and productive culture

as compared to a strict and not so friendly culture. The leadership style of Jordan was

democratic as all the employees were involved in working for the welfare of the

organization.

2- WHAT KIND OF FOLLOWER WAS ADAM GERRIT? WHAT ARE THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF FOLLOWERS THAT YOU ADMIRE? WHAT ARE THE

CHARACTERISTICS THAT WOULD YOU WANT FROM THEM TO DISPLAY WHILE

WORKING FOR YOU?

Adam Gerrit was a very dedicated employee of the Jake’s Pet Land. He was a follower of his

store manager Phillip Jordan and devotes himself for the welfare of the store. Adam Gerrit

was an effective and dynamic follower as he was able to think critically and was very

respectful to the leaders’ authority. He was able to take independent decisions in the

organization for the welfare of the organization as well as customers. Adam Gerrit has

certain effective qualities as a follower like enthusiasm, knowing the responsibilities,

emotional awareness, and initiative follower, seek to serve, lifelong learning and many

others (Salehzadeh, 2017).

The characteristics of the followers which I admire are their abilities to learn lifelong and to

think independently. These characteristics also include self-leadership, taking

responsibilities, commitment towards the work and the organization, ability to continuously

improve their performance by taking feedbacks and self-audits. The consistency of the

followers, their high-quality contribution and their trustworthy attitude and behaviour are

most admired. There are some traits of the ideal followers which I admire the most which

include effective communications, flexibility, strong social skills, commitment and

competency (Weller and Ruff, 2016).

There are certain characteristics of the followers which I want them to display while they

are working for me. This includes the ability to communicate fluently in the organization

with the seniors and juniors, ability to improve their performance continuously, self-

leadership, taking good care of the responsibilities, good team players, and flexible attitude

and high level of commitment towards the work (Garcia, 2017).

3- IF YOU WERE THE DISTRICT MANAGER THEN WHICH STORE MANAGER THAN
WHICH STORE MANAGER WOULD HAVE BEEN PREFERRED BY YOU AND WHY?

WHICH MANAGER DID A BETTER JOB OF MANAGING UP AND WHICH DID A BETTER

JOB OF MANAGING DOWN?

If I were the District Manager then I would have preferred Phillip Jordan as a Store Manager

over the Jan Whitfall. There are certain reasons based on which I would be preferring Phillip

Jordan which includes-supporting attitude towards the employees, maintaining a healthy

working environment and friendly culture in the store, retained potential employees,

rewards and recognition policies, ability to keep the guarded secrets. As, under the

leadership of the Phillip Jordan, the employees of the store were happy and performing

well, the revenues of the organization were increasing and the loyal customers were

retained which were beneficial for the store so, Phillip Jordan as a store manager is

preferred more. Although Jan Whitfall was working according to the policies laid down by

the District Manager in her leadership the employees of the organization were not happy,

they were punished for small things and they started leaving the organization which

resulted in the decreased revenue of the store so she was not able to properly manage the

things in the store (Yahaya and Ebrahim, 2016).

Phillip Jordan did a better job than Jan Whitfall of managing up the job and make the

organization grew and contributed to the increased revenues of the organization. As he

made a friendly culture in the store and was ready to bend some policies for customers

satisfaction he managed the job better. While Jan Whitfall has followed strict procedures

and policies in the store and was not worried about the employees or customers she

managed down the store (Glauser and Holland, 2016).
