Intersession 7: Leadership & Team Performance Project for Final Presentation (Part 2)
Description of the issue faced during the project
As per the instruction of my supervisor, I had been assigned as the tea m lad of a project.
The name of my project was Cultural competence improvement project. And the purpose of the
project was to enhance the cultural competence between the employees as well as between the
client and the employees (Ang & Van Dyne, 2015). Considering the fact that I work in a
multicultural organization, it is highly necessary to enhance the cultural competence of the
employees to prevent frequent conflicts as well as to enhance the number of consumers from
different cultural background. While conducting the project I faced several team issues. First of
all, two of the team members was not ready to work with colleagues who are from a different
religion. The second issue of lack of cooperation from several team members. I stated the issues
to my mentor and he provided me with effective solutions of the issues that have been discussed
bellow.
Suggestions provided by my Mentor
As per my mentor, cultural incompetence is one of the most common issues faced by
both the leaders as well as the employees of a multicultural organization. Lack of cultural
competence possesses the potential to cause huge attrition of both employees and clients and thus
reduce the revenue of the organization to a good extent (Dauvrin & Lorant, 2015). The first
technique suggested by my expert to deal with culturally incompetent employee is to
communicate clearly and explicitly. As a leader, I am supposed to establish a communication
system that is expected to be followed by everyone (Dreachslin et al., 2017). The employee

needs to be educated about why cultural diversity is important for the organization and how lack
of competence can affect the same. Another thing that needs to be conducted is periodic one to
meeting with employees. As a leader, periodic meetings will help me to understand the degree to
which the one to one conversation and education has been able to reduce the cultural competence
of the employees. In order to enhance the cooperation of the employees, face to face meetings
should be conducted. Along with this as a leader, I need to demonstrate effective communication
skills in order to demonstrate empathy towards their issue and persuade them to demonstrate
effective cooperation.

Question 1
This week, I developed an effective understanding of how to deal with team issues like lack of
cultural competence as well as cooperation of team members. These issues can be considered as
major contemporary business problems that are often faced by managers. Thus, the learning of
this week is highly relevant to my current course.
Question 2
I applied my communication skills as well as educate the employees about the importance of
cultural competence in order to deal with the team issues
Question 3
While conducting the project, I encountered several barriers. However buy conducting one to
one interviews and communicating effectively with the employees, I was able to solve the issue.
