Leadership and Team Working
Introduction
Leadership and teamwork are essential features of group communication. While working
together as a team, one maybe called to lead at a particular point. One can rise to that role since
the group identifies their specific skills fixed in relative to the job, or one can be chosen to a
position of duty for themselves and others. One’s communication skills will be their basis for
victory as an associate and as a leader.
Teamwork
A team is a group of individuals who work together to achieve a common goal. A team is
created to accomplish a short term or a long term goals. Work is an activity that needs effort and
commitment (Chuang, Jackson &Jiang, 2016). Each member of a team must fulfill their
requirements for the team to emerge triumphantly, and a team, like a chain, is only as strong as
its weakest member.
There are high chances that we will attain an advanced level of performance than
individuals due to our joint energies and abilities. Group efforts always produce creativity and
motivation that cannot be found in a single contractor project (Yang, Huang & Wu, 2011).
Every member of our team has a sense of belonging to the team, and the variety of opinions and
diversity can strengthen the success of the assignment we are working on.

Challenges faced
There are challenges we faced while working as a team. The first one is that the
assignment can be compromised when the members of the team are expected to follow and
pressured to go along with a strategy that they have not established (Goetsch & Davis, 2014).
Secondly, the propensity of individuals to accept the group's opinions and actions despite the
individual's concern reduces competence. Lastly, competition among my team members and
personalities played a role in the inconveniences we incurred while working on the assignment
I identified that my team members are more eager to express their views and follow over
with actions if they observe that they are a significant part of the team (Ford et al., 21016). I also
feel that creating time for preparation and providing time for each member to learn and reflect
allows us to obtain essential perceptions from each other and enables us to give information that
challenges the quo. Original thinking can show insightful and serves to challenge the operation
positively. Our respect for diverse opinions encourages open discussions.
Difficulties encountered
There are some sections that we encountered some difficulties while working as a team.
For example, effective communication amongst my team members was a challenge at some
point, but our team leader stepped in with a plan for an effective cross-cultural communication
system that helped in the realization of high team performance (Sohmen, 2013).

Data collection
Some of the data collection methods we used in this assignment include:
o Administering questionnaires where we randomly administered questionnaires to a group
of selected individuals
o Making observations where we visited different organizations and observed how leaders
of a team conducted their day to day operations
o Interviews conduction where we interviewed some employees on how their leaders
operate and solve problems
o Library we went to the library to do some research on the pertaining team working and
leadership aspects
o Internet we used the internet sources such as Google to gain information on the
importance of leaders in a team.
The factors to consider when setting up a team are:
Selection of team members wisely
Selection of responsible leader
Clarification of goals
Classification of responsibilities
Elicit commitment

Leadership
I recognized that apart from effective communication, problem-solving, and sharing a
common objective, leadership is another crucial aspect of a strong team that always seems
missing. A leader is critical to the success of my team. The absence of a clearly defined leader,
the entire foundation of the team will dissolve (Bearman et al., 2012). Below are some of the
reasons why leadership is essential for our team while performing this assignment
My team leader keeps the team accountable. It is easy for individuals in my team to
dodge their duties because they can hide among other colleagues. That is where our leader comes
in. Our team leader is accountable for the final results of our team; hence, he must keep the team
members accountable for their work.
My team leader empowers us. My team leader is in charge of assigning duties to the team
as well as enabling us to perform the job assigned to us in our way.
My team leader keeps projects moving forward through following ways: ensuring that the
team members understand the idea of the project, establishing distinct deadlines, defining roles
within the team, and describing how every part adds up to the project objectives.
How I would apply the knowledge I have gained in future project management practice
I will embrace a team structure that is multi-cultural because it is resourceful in solving
issues and in giving solutions. Even though diversity can increase problems in communication, it
can benefit the project significantly when managed proficiently (Alias et al., 2014). I would also
ensure that a stakeholder management plan is updated since it helps in understanding the
shareholders and their cause-effect relationship as well as dealing with them in a proper ethical
manner.

For the success of my project management practice, I would classify the stakeholders
using methods such as interest and power, influence and impact and power and influence.
Classification of the stakeholders is of importance since I will be able to know the impact that
the shareholders have on the project (Mir & Pinnington, 2014).
I would also ensure that an internal and external communication plan is adopted. An
efficient internal communication assists the project team to get updated about the project, and
also assist in building the culture of the firm and work competence in times of disaster. External
communication plays a vital role in ensuring that the project team knows the steps to follow
when engaging with shareholders.
Conclusion
In conclusion, leadership goes hand in hand with teamwork in that a strong teamwork
depends on an effective leader. Good leadership lays a foundation for the entire team. We were
able to complete the assignment because our leader clearly defined the roles each member of our
team had to take.
