Task-1
What is involved in being a successful leader?
Leader
A leader is an individual who effects individuals or a group of individuals towards the
attainment of common goals to accomplish. A leader is someone who inspires others to lead
in a surrounding environment with positive or negative attributes. It covers various attributes
as purpose to achieve with a common goal, which is committed with persons. The person
mentions as his or her behavior motivates a successful leader who goes first and set an
example to other people. To be a successful leader, a person must have a deeply rooted
commitment with the goals, which strives to achieve common goals (Wong, 2019). The
leader always focuses on helping and motivating others to act as a team and increases
productivity. They have control over their self, understand the perception of others and
always listen to others. A successful leader finds the best in others and he is always an
influencer to motivate.
Qualities
The primary responsibility of a successful leader is to lead and the root cause is building
more confidence and trust. Successful leaders have the control to intellect after their
organizations, their visions are steering their brands around pitfalls. They self-manage their
work with effectiveness and acting in a strategically environment to cope up with the
solutions. They guide others to focus on the future and thinks about company operations. The
successful leader is always responsible and set clear goals to persist in achieving them. They
manage the complexity with fostering originality and innovations. Team building, learning
agility and making lasting relationship are the effective management system that fosters the
behavior of successful leaders (Patel, 2019). The various qualities are essential for a
successful leader as a leader creates a positive surrounding of trust, building right team,
keeping the mind on big pictures, monitor performances, give feedback and they always
believes in maintaining open communications (Webster, 2019).
Theories and Models
There are various models and approaches, which followed by leaders in achieving the targets,
and each of them is contributing to the management system. Leaders follow some of them on
individualism and goals of the team with becoming a successful leader.
Big Five Personality Traits
The professionals and leaders use this model in achieving positive personality and individuals
can be motivated. The combination of these personality traits is openness, conscientiousness,
extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. This makes the combination, which is termed
an OCEAN. The five factors, which introduced as primary factors of personality, are
determined to openness with experiences. This tells in flashing the level of intellectual
curiosity, variety, creativity and preference for novelty. Conscientiousness is the tendency of
self-disciplined, focus on achieving goals and prioritizing planned instead of spontaneous

behavior. Positive energy, tendency to explore stimulations, sociability in the organization
will help to build successful leaders (Özbağ, 2019).
Source: (Five-Factor Model of Personality, 2019)
Agreeableness tells about the cooperativeness instead of suspicious attitude towards each
other. The fifth trait, which tells about the emotional constancy and also called Neuroticism,
this refers to the experience of anger, anxiety and most of the forms of negative feelings have
a high mark on neuroticism. The traits of conscientiousness and openness have a basic
strength to guide me in a positive direction with desirability. The main advances of this
model are the establishment of taxonomy, which demonstrates in a disorganized and scattered
way. The main weakness when conducting and examine this model is little research gathered
in collated form. These are not orthogonal to the concept of one another and this not explains
the perception of human personality. It relies on self-reporting questionnaires to be measured
and there is a falsification of responses which is impossible to deal completely (Hassan,
Asad, & Hoshino, 2019).
Path-Goal Leadership Theory
The founder of path-goal theory is Robert J. House, which describes the concept of leader
behavior is more contingent to performances of the employee, satisfaction, and motivation of
the employee. It is about how the leader motivates followers to achieve the designated
objectives. It intended to explain how leaders assistance followers along with their path by
choosing a pattern of behavior, which suits followers and removes the obstacles. The theory
focuses on the leader should give positive directions, gets involved in the achievement of the
goals and support all his employees. The major advantage of this model is suitable for
emergencies and there is more flexibility to implement. There are more ideas and concept is
easy to understand with other theories. The leaders are too complicated to describe,
controlled responses and there is more level of self-estimation. Time constraint is the best and
important feature of this path theory model. There are various disadvantages of this model as
this is undemocratic in nature, the negative leader has more flaws, more dependency on the

leader and leaders are always rational and act as a basis of delusions (Path Theory Goal,
2019).
Lewin’s Leadership Style
The father of social psychology is as Kurt Lewin. In 1939, Lewin framework defines a
combination of three styles of leadership as related to decision making as autocratic, laissez-
faire and democratic. Autocratic leaders are more focussed on making their decisions by own
and they do not want to consult with their team. When decisions made, they just impose those
and expect obedience, which is too follow by others. The Democratic leaders, on the other
hand, make active roles in the decision-making procedure and involve others to participate.
They carried accountability and look at the decisions made with the achieve targets. Laissez-
faire leaders are the one who is less involved in decision making and left decisions on their
teams (Leadership Styles, 2019).
Effective team members are motivated and enhance their skills by implementing decisions in
the management system, but it can create problems if not implemented successfully. In
Lewin’s experiments, he founded that the most effective style of leadership is democratic as
leaders play an active role in participating and take decisions which helps an organization or
becoming a successful leader. Autocratic and laissez-faire approach did not work together as
hard as they did when being actively led in the organizations (Kavanagh, 2019).
Transformational Leadership
This theory states that leader always works with their teams to create a vision, which guides
the change through inspirations, and identify needed changes in the effective management
system. This serves to enhance morale, performances of the job and motivation of the people
by a variety of mechanisms. This covers several aspects as emphasizing intrinsic motivation
and raises awareness of moral standards. The positive attributes cover in promoting
cooperation and harmony to appeal to the greater ideas of followers (Faris, 2018).
The strengths of this theory always serve the ideal role model for the followers and it
embodies the quality of the performances of the team. There are also some weaknesses,
which are concerned with transformational leadership as this develops the negative outcomes
if not applied in a true manner (. A & . J, 2019). Adolf Hitler is a perfect example of a
negative pioneer as he offered vision and more concerned with charismatic. Sometimes
leaders are more focus on not providing consistent feedback to the customers or employees.
The results may be disruptive if the risk is taken by transformational leaders (Gaille, 2018).
These are some of the approaches and theories, which effectively used by leaders to grow and
achieve targets with individualism and group targets. A successful leader motivates others to
grow with a chase and enhance their morale to stand in a competitive environment.

Task- 2
Can good leadership be developed, and if so, how?
As per Hersey& Blanchard, leadership is a process of influencing others by participating in
the activities or guide the team with specified goals and targets. It is interpersonal influence,
communication process, situation exercise toward the accomplishment of clear targets. It is a
function of knowing yourself with building trust among yourselves and taking effective
actions to realize the potential of leadership. Leadership is about change and helps an
organization or an individual to grow their opportunities and avoid future threats. It starts
with a challenging person to move and to unleash their untapped potentials. Leaders are not
born with skills, they learn to do practice in their surrounding environment to cope up with
the situations and grow their skills. Some of the positive leaders always set an example to be
positive and learn their attitude and skills to grow effectively in any surrounding
environments.
Good leadership requires developing the inner traits of a leader by practicing more towards
achieving goals and targets. No one is born as a leader, the one who participate more and
practice more develop positive styles of leadership. Every leader has their own definition, but
a good leader is someone who led others and influences others. A good leader develops
qualities with practicing, learning and influencing others with regular practice in their
surroundings. As a leader, one should be so clear with the thoughts he wants to pursue and
lead in life. Leadership believe in others who perform better and achieve targets by leaders.
The leadership can be developing by keep learning, communicate, looking for a bigger
picture and let your actions and goals speak for you (Julka, 2019).
Pace Setter Leadership
This is a type of leadership where a leader focuses on setting their bar high and expects work
to done at the right time with high productivity. The targets are sets to accomplish before
time and they are mostly obsessive about doing all the things faster and ask the same for
everyone. This is first set by Daniel Goleman in 2002, pacesetting leaders set high
performances for themselves and with their followers and they always exemplify the
behavior, which seeks from other groups. The leaders quickly pinpoint poor performers of
others and advise them to participate more (PACESETTING LEADERSHIP, 2019).
Behavioural Theory
This theory refers that leaders are the focus on particular actions and actions of pionners
rather than their personal characteristics. The behavior of a person may vary from one person
to another. Effective leadership is the result of many well-educated skills that motivate to
perform in the surrounding environments.
Servant Leadership
The main goal of the pioneer is to serve the surrounding environments wherever he is
standing. This is different from all other leadership as leader main focus is to flourish for the
organizations. As described by Robert K. Greenleaf, servant leader should be the focus on
serving others rather than looking at his personal behavior, give healthier advice, more

autonomous and they love to serve and motivate others with their capabilities. The strengths
of these leadership styles results in leaders grow themselves with the mind-set and serve
others first, they keep benefiting others with acquiring personal growth. The number of big
organizations and leaders uses these types of leadership styles in their lifestyle. The principle
of servant leadership states about the concepts that relate with listening, understanding,
healing, awareness, persuasion, prudence and stewardship ( Meuser, . Liden, Wayne, & Liao,
2013).
The strengths of this theory state about the main decisions always based on benefits to all, it
encourages empathy, and leaders serve their customers in the best way they can. Servant
leadership gives a sense of ownership to work in healthy environments. It enables that person
who feels a sense of ownership in their work and this turns to increases dedications and sense
of positive pride. The major qualities of servant leaders are they need to motivate, support
their people, inspire and encourage accomplishing company objectives and goals. They
involve other people in making the decision process easier and serve with their contributions
to lead with them. There is the various weakness of this theory, as a leader does not work in
environments where followers are not open to being empowered and support them. The
oxymoron quality of servant leadership has to deal with lots of confusions (A Systematic
Literature Review of Servant Leadership Theory in Organizational Contexts, 2019).
Abraham Lincoln is a good example of a servant leader, he considers all his action in US civil
war and able to strive so hardtop feels the slaves in actions for being servant leaders. Mother
Teresa spent her life in working selflessly for the destitute and she is a more wonderful and
inspiring example of servant leaders. Mahatma Gandhi also serves best for his country to
promote non-violence and yet strenuous efforts to free India from British rule. He has gained
international recognition for the same and his aim is to work for the welfare of the people
( Servant Leadership Theory , 2019).
Strengths-Based Leadership
As the name suggests, it is a concept of identifying and leveraging your own strengths and
building more strengths of others to achieve results and goals. The strengths of a person fall
into four categories as executing, strategic thinking, relationship building, and influencing.
When all these leadership styles and qualities fall in the category, then the strengths of a
person increase to reach goals and targets (Conchie & Rath, 2019).
By adopting these types of leadership theories and styles, one can develop leadership traits to
grow for him and for organizations goals. By practicing more towards goals, one must learn
about the different styles and approaches to develop leadership. These are some of the
approaches and theories, which help to strengthen the development of leaders and
individuals.

What distinguishes leadership from management?
Management
According to F.W. Taylor, Management is an art of knowing what to do and getting things
done through with people in formally organized groups. It is a problem-solving process,
which manages things to achieve organizational goals through efficient uses of scarce
resources in changing environments. The practice of management is an integral part that
plays a significant role as an integral component of technical as well as a social process. For
example, the managerial role of homemaker is to manage the ingredients in managing the
home. She appraises the needs of the households for a period of a month and plans everything
she needs to constraints on these resources. She encourages, motivates all the members of the
family for improving themselves, and attains those goals. Management is a system and
essential part of organized society that manages from planning, organizing, controlling and
directing all the functions of the organizations. Management is the conduct of affairs to move
towards its main objectives through learning in a continuous manner of improvement and
optimization of resources (What is Management? Definition, Features (Explained), 2019).
Leadership
Leadership is a process where the executive directs and influences another behavior towards
the accomplishments of specified goals. It is an ability to induce the subordinates to work
with confidence. It defines as a capacity towards the realization of the goals. It is an
important element of directing functions of management. The leader stimulates what is best
and concentrates on what is being gropingly and shatteringly. To be a successful leader, the
manager poses the qualities to foster the foresight, initiative, personal integrity and build self-
confidence. Leadership is the ability for securing actions that are desirable from a group of
followers voluntarily who take several steps for themselves as well as for the organizations
(Rouse, 2019).

considered in the top 50 leaders worldwide. They are mostly branch managers, regional
managers or department managers who want innovation in their ideas and just implement
with the associated risks (How leaders influence employees’, 2019).
Task- 4
What have you learned about leadership from your own experiences, on this course and
elsewhere?
Leadership is a matter of courage and influencing others with a certain period. In an
organization where I was working, the manager always led others to perform their tasks with
a positive approach. The manager uses the transformational style of leadership where he
guides us to perform the required tasks in a better way with various skills. Transformational
leadership focuses on how leaders who want to change in other perceptions. James
MacGregor burns with the introduction of transformational leadership when he was in
workplaces and contributes to it (Transformational Leadership Theory, 2019).
The role of a manager is to affect the performances and increases the productivity of the
individuals with the organizations. He always carries the responsibility for aligning the better
performances of their departments and all their staff in overarching the development of
targets. A coaching style of leadership helps us to guide us for the new tasks and this shapes
the vital role in the culture of workplaces. This is the right approach, which followed by the
leader in the workplace as this result in the productivity of workplaces as well as
individualism. Positive environment and benefits always motivate the person to perform
better in the workplace. Appreciation helps employees to recognize themselves as well as a
lead in workplaces that he is superior and can perform with more targets to achieve them (5
Ways Leaders Can Positively Influence Their Staff, 2019). Morale, performances,
communication, perception towards new things changes and attitude of us is the main effect,
which I had observed. The strategy that the manager uses to adapt in the workplace where
employees get motivated is direct communication, influencing with the targets to achieve and
provide rewards for encouragement. In my past where I had worked, I was sometimes
confused but with this workplace manager and other team members led me towards the
positive environment and reward me for the performances, which I had performed in a whole
year (Miksen, 2019).
From this module, there is a wider distribution of the concept of leadership and management.
Leadership is a concept of influencing others and management is a wider concept of
managing things from planning, organizing, directing and controlling all the planned
activities of the organizations. Coaching, servant and transformational style of leadership had
used effectively in the organizations.
