TASK 1- ESSAY
INTRODUCTION
The essay will cover the different domains of learning with the help of Bloom’s
taxonomy of learning followed by the analysis of how the learning theories are relatable
to the skill development in the healthcare environment.
DISCUSSION
EXPLAINING THE MANNER IN WHICH VARIOUS DOMAINS OF LEARNING
ARE APPLICABLE TO LEARNING IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE
The understanding of the way in which different domains of learning can be applied to
the learning process can be done from the Bloom’s taxonomy of learning (Forehand,
2010). It is basically a set of 3 hierarchical models that are used for classifying the
objectives of educational learning in various levels of complication and specificity. The
domains in Bloom’s taxonomy are-
Cognitive- This domain is also called knowledge-based domain which is further
classified into 6 levels of objectives which are knowledge, comprehending, applying the
acquired knowledge, analyzing which include the analysis of information in various
parts, synthesizing that involves building a pattern or a particular structure from different
elements and evaluating involving the presentation of the defensive opinions.

Affective- The skills in this domain provide the description regarding the emotional
reactions of individuals and their capability for feeling other’s pleasures or pain (Adams,
2015). In this domain, 5 levels are present from the lowest to highest order processes
which are-
Receiving- includes paying attention and remembering the learning
Responding- reacting to the stimulus and responding to it
Valuing- linking values to the acquired knowledge
Organizing- accommodating the values, ideas and information in a schema and
then connecting and elaborating on the learning
Characterizing
Psychomotor- This is the action based domain where physical movement and
coordination is being used and gives emphasis on the change or the development in
behaviour and skills. 7 levels in this domain are proposed by Simpsons (Adams, 2015)-
Perception- the capability of using the cues for guiding motor activity
Set- involves the promptness for acting comprising the physical, emotional and
mental sets.
Guided response- involves the trial and error in earlier learning stages of the
complex skills
Mechanism- the responses of learning are habitual and the actions can be
performed proficiently with confidence
Complex overt response- the motor acts are skillfully performed involving the
complicated movement patterns
Adaptation- well development of skills and the people have the ability to modify
the patterns of movement so as to meet special requirements
Origination- development of new patterns of movement for fitting to some
specific problems

ANALYSIS OF HOW THE LEARNING THEORIES ARE RELATABLE TO THE
DEVELOPMENT OF UNDERSTANDING AND SKILLS IN THE HEALTH CARE
ENVIRONMENT
The learning theories are divided into 3 categories namely cognitive, humanistic, and
behaviourist. These theories have a relation to the development of skills and
understanding for the individuals in the healthcare environment.
Cognitivism- This theory was developed from Gestalt theory. It gives emphasis on the
perception of people, their ability to learn and solve the problems and the other mental
processes. In the healthcare environment from the viewpoint of Gestalt theory, the care
provider perceives the situations from a holistic point of view rather than breaking down
into subunits. This changes their perception totally (Ertmer and Newby, 2013).
This helps the care providers to develop skills of understanding and perceiving the
information, interpret it and then recognize the correct information to be conveyed. For
instance, at the workplace, the cognitive theory helps the caring person to understand
and perceive the condition and thinking of elderly people, then interpret the information
they want to convey and finally recognize it.
Behaviourist- This theory gives emphasis to the behaviours that are objectively
observed and deducts the self-governing activities of the mind. In this theory, learning
is nothing but the acquiring of a new behaviour according to the changing environmental
conditions.
So the employees in health care place adapt to the changing environment and conduct
learning of skills and understanding them as per the needs (Jonassen and Land, 2012).
Humanistic- It involves observation of other's behaviour and their outcomes. The
individuals are themselves liable for their actions and are independent to change their
actions and behaviour. But the actions need to be conscious and rational, must be
controlled by the biological urges (Moon, 2013).

This is needed to be adopted and learned by care providers in the healthcare
environment the most as the care and treatment of patients involves much human
behaviour rather than reacting to instant stimuli.
CONCLUSION
It is observed that the domains of learning have been well understood from Bloom’s
taxonomy of learning and the learning theories are much effective in the learning of
skills and development of understanding in the healthcare environment.

TASK 2- CASE STUDY
1.2 EXPLAINING VARIOUS WAYS IN WHICH LEARNING CAN TAKE PLACE
IN THE WORKPLACE IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE
In the case study of Mr Smith who is deaf and old (90 years) and the care worker, Elma
she started learning at the very first stage of the Kolb’s learning cycle. This is explained
below-
Concrete experiences- Elma experienced that Mr Smith is not responding to her
questions and thus gave up that he will ever respond to her. She asked him about his
family but didn’t receive any response. This was her concrete experience (Kolb, 2014).
Reflective observation- Elma then decides upon the fact that she will not continue to
talk to Mr Smith. She then analyses the situation and understands the whole situation
and believes the fact that Mr Smith due to his deafness is not responding.
Abstract conceptualization- Elma discussed with one of the colleagues about the
situation and the care assistant tells her Mr Smith can do lip reading. She then realizes
she was not facing him while talking and therefore he could not respond.
Active experimentation- She then went again to Mr Smith and tested the hypothesis
made by her for talking with him by facing him. To her expectations and other’s
experience, he was now able to lip read and responded to the same questions about
family asked by Elma before (Kolb, 2014).
The different ways in which learning can occur in the healthcare environment are
learning through doing things which involves the active experimentation techniques,
learning through gaining experiences which comprise of getting the experiences
whether positive or negative and then learning through the experiences gained. The
other methods of learning are planning and observing of the activities that are taking
place in the work environment and learning through teaching and mentoring etc.

TASK 3- ESSAY
INTRODUCTION
A VAK assessment will be done and various learning styles will be investigated upon.
The influence of the learning styles will be discussed.
DISCUSSION
EXPLAINING CONCEPTS OF LEARNING STYLES
The learning styles are the different manner in which individuals organize, represent
and interpret information. So there are different types of learners and their concepts-
Visual – they prefer the images, graphics and maps to learn about new information.
Auditory- these types of learners get about the information through listening and
speaking. For instance, through lectures and group discussions.
Read and write- These individuals learn through reading or taking notes. They have
the ability to translate the abstract information into words.
Kinesthetic- they learn the information from the tactile representation of information.
They are the hands-on learners who learn through figuring out certain aspects.
Activist- they task risks and show impulsive behaviour. They like to learn through role
plays and games etc.
Reflector- These learners ponder upon the learning topic and analyze it (Pritchard,
2013).
EXPLAINING FACTORS THAT IMPACT EFFECTIVE LEARNING
DEVELOPMENT
The aspects that influence the learning development are given below-
Motivation- The factor of motivation has a major role in the development of learning.
The individuals get motivation in their workplace and get encouraged to learn more.

Environment- The external and internal environment in which individuals live impact
the most on the learning process. If the workplace motivates the employees, the will be
encouraged and if the work environment is negative they will feel less need to learn new
skills (Kim, et al. 2011)
Culture- The learning styles of individuals vary with the culture they belong to. The
teaching and learning styles keep on fluctuating and it may be difficult to interpret the
nonverbal communication on the basis of the distinct societies that have different
cultures.
Past experience- The experiences of the individuals in the past have a major impact on
the learning process. If the individuals have gained a good experience in the previous
organizations, then they will adapt to new learning easily.
Time accessible- the management of time according to the assigned tasks is an
important factor. If the individuals are successful in time management and administering
it, then the learning process will be simplified for them (Kim, et al. 2011).
