Creativity and Innovation Module: SCAMPER Letterbox Design Solutions

This assignment explores the redesign of letterboxes using the SCAMPER technique, addressing the decline in traditional mail and the rise of online shopping. The student analyzes the existing letterbox design, generating ideas for improvement across seven categories: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, and Reverse/Rearrange. The solution proposes innovative features like digital locks for security, hybrid messaging systems, parcel storage, and integration with technologies such as intercoms and cameras. The assignment emphasizes the importance of adapting letterboxes to meet the evolving needs of consumers in a digital age, ensuring their continued relevance and functionality.

Part A
SCAMPER was developed to help in catching fire creativity and handle all conflicts at the time
of brainstorming sessions. There are 7 techniques in SCAMPER that represents [S] Substitute,
[C] Combine, [A] Adapt, [M] Modify, [P] Put to another usage, [E] Eliminate and [R] Reverse or
Rearrange.
SCAMPER: Hybrid and Large Letter Box
S – Substitute
The substitute for the letter box can be direct mailing of letter to the specific place where one can
collect their own. There are so many personal messages and letters, which keep so much privacy.
For this, the information regarding personal message and letter can be sent to the person via
phone or message. This strategy is different, by which a person can collect letter or mail. Along
with that there should be permission criteria in which the recipient can allow other delivery man
to visit their place in order to deliver the letter on specific time (Jeong, Moon, Ha & Jung, 2016).
C – Combine
Connect the letter box with message recorder as well in which the sender can record the message
for the receiver in case of super urgency. This message will pop up in the phone’s message area
of the receiver, which would be helpful in getting instant information to the receiver regarding
emergency mail.

It could also have the large parcel box which can consume a little space for parcel. The
combination can be the planter with parcel box in which the storage for parcel will contain at the
place of pot which can be opened. This strategy could be helpful in not covering a lot of space in
the garden or outside of the house because this place would be useful for both purposes such as
planting and parcelling (Surat, Faridayu, Kummin & Baharudin, 2018).
A – Adapt
The term of adaption can be applied in the letter box strategy by taking consideration of the
involvement of the communication which could be possible with the help of the intercom.
M - Modify/Minify/Magnify
Bigger is better which could be applied in the letter box to put large parcel at home. The
procedure for sending messages or parcels can be change by making change in the letter box by
putting digital lock along with hybrid message. The modification in the letter box could have
brought change in sending letters to the selected person.
P - Put to another Use
The letter box can be used for different purpose as there can be bird feeder with systematic
manner that could be supported to make healthy environment (Serrat, 2017). Along with that
there should enough space for the birds so that they can get shelter in rainy season.
E – Eliminate
The same colour of the letter box and huge stand are being the reason of bareness which can be
fulfilled by people to decorate or put some motivational message on the letter box with different

colour by which one can get motivated though this approach. Along with that the huge stand of
the letter box can be used for different purpose such as planter and bird feeder.
R - Re-arrange
Re-structure the letter box position and size to make them large can be taken into consideration
for multiple uses. Involvement of intercom with modify communication strategy though which
sender can convey his message to the recipients in case of urgency. Along with the position of
the camera can be placed over there to avoid any unwanted situation.
Part B
According to my point of view, the best idea come from the aspect of Modify in which one can
put digital lock in their letter box for the purpose of safety. The large letter box can become the
parcel box in which the sender can keep the parcel with hybrid message. This can be brought
with instant messages delivery by which the receiver can get instant update about the messages.
In general term when one moves outside or on a trip, they would obviously want to know about
the instant message so that instant action can be taken. I found in the context of hybrid letter box
that It is the technology that help in writing message on the sheet and insert in the letter box and
the recipient after putting digital lock can get message in his phone along with given screen
within the letter box. This would be helpful in getting instant information about the parcel or
message by the recipient, no matter where they are. I think that camera facility should be there so
that the receiver can get image of the sender for future concern. There are so many things happen
in the world which come under corruption and to harm others. With this advanced technology
one can get instant image of other person so that any misuse could not occur. With the help of
the hybrid letter box, the message can transformation in to analogue input into digital data and

this would be first access points which have been designed for the infrastructure of the
neighbourhood. This technology would be helpful in filling the gap between the digital space and
the physical space (Hussain & Carignan, 2016). Along with that according to me there should be
proper space for keeping parcel of the receiver. The trend of online shopping has been increased
day by day and people prefer to but things without going anywhere and for this they use various
applications even for grocery items as well. The digital lock will safe their item from theft and
keeps them safe until the authorised people could not open the lock. The expansion of idea in the
form of keeping digital lock for online products and camera to recognize the person would be
helpful in making perfect letter box.
