Level 5 Leadership: The Triumph of Humility
From this article, my lessons learned are that level 5 leaders manifest the humility.
The leaders are provided credit to others, as well as they are also good luck for their
company’s success. When results are poor, they are blaming themselves for it. Level 5
leaders are acted quietly and calmly relied on the inspired standards, not inspiring charisma
and to inspire. As per Collins (2006), the leaders are shy as well as fearless at the time of
taking decisions. Therefore, most of people are considered it as risky.
The research gap in this article is that one time Collins talked about his own research
and next time, he talked about possible characteristics of the level 5 leader. I felt that this
article is quite interesting to know about five levels of leadership.
At the time of transforming the company from good to great one, then one should
think about a great personality to lead the entire business organization. Examples of those
personalities are provided in the article as Dunlap, Lee Iacocca and others. Based on the
article, it is seen that there are five levels of leadership.
First one is highly capable individual. At this specific level, it makes high quality of
the contributions with the work. It possess useful level of the knowledge and talent required
to perform proper job.
Level 2 is contributing the project team members (Caldwell, Ichiho, & Anderson,
2017). At this particular level, the leader should consider their knowledge as well as skills to
success the project team. There is efficient working, as well as successfully work with group
of people.
According to Collins (2006), level 3 is competent manager, those can organize the
project group efficiently to gain business goals as well as objectives.

Level 4 is effective leader is categorized as most top leader, in the organization to
meet with the objectives and business mission.
Finally, level 5 is great leader, having abilities to meet with four levels of the
leadership. The great leader has unique humility as well as required correct greatness. Level 5
leaders are considered as humble people.
Collins (2006) mentioned that a top attribute of the level 5 leaders are taking
responsibilities and roles for mistakes of their project team as well as failings. Collins
provided evidences of 11 companies had level 5 leaders to support the business history. It
helps me to understand the characteristics of level 5 leaders in better way.
Seven Transformation of Leadership
In the study, I critically review the article written by Rooke and Torbert which was
published in the year 2005. According to this article, seven transformational leadership is
survey related to development of leadership. The action logic of leaders are main factor in the
article as well as the author classified the leader in seven various categorises like opportunist,
individualist, expert, alchemist, achiever, diplomat and strategist.
According to Rooke and Torbert (2005), opportunists are being characterized by the
mistrust, manipulativeness and others. This type of leaders are winning the chance anyway as
they want. As per the result of the survey, 5% of leaders are opportunist.
Individualist’s leaders are irritating the colleagues as well as their bosses as they are
tend to ignore organizational rules along with processes. It is challenging work for the leader
as they are not providing practical value to the company.
Expert is considered as rational, as well as tried to exercise their control, by getting
proper knowledge. The experts are focused to control over their own behavior. Rooke and

Torbert (2005) mentioned that expert is great contributor while they are weak at the
collaboration with the project team. Team work is not going well as they are focused on
colleague’s feelings.
Alchemist is rarest one among all other leader categorization. They have capability to
invent themselves in other way, and are living at high morality. They are able to deal with
various critical situations (Kelly, 2013).
Achiever is other leader type where the leaders are supportive to create positive
working environment for the staffs. They are mainly focused on strategic goals.
Rooke and Torbert (2005) discussed that diplomat is loyal as well as compassionate.
This type of leaders are performing their roles efficiently and help the project team members
to achieve their goals. They are problematic, when working at top leadership role as they are
always avoiding conflicts as well as focus on point of self-destruction.
Strategist is creating a shared vision across various logic and creating personal
transformations. They are creating changes in the organizations by paying attention to both
national as well as international development.
