1HEALTH CARE
1. From this module, I have learned about health disparities experienced by LGBT
population and this knowledge would help me to change my practice as an advanced
practice nurse practitioner and use appropriate skills to interact with such patients and
maintain respect and dignity for such patient. The module readings has developed my
understanding regarding current health status and unique health needs of the LGBT
individuals based on race, ethnicity, age, geographic location and socioeconomic status.
This will help me to change my communication style and identify appropriate health
needs for this population group while practicing as an advanced nurse practitioner.
2. As the LGBT youth disparities are going on increasing, my priorities for the adolescent
patient visit includes providing affirmative and inclusive care to effectively work with
LGBT youths. As LGBT youths are affected by stigma and discrimination which has an
adverse impact on their health, use of culturally competent and developmentally
appropriate strategies would help to maintain collaborative relationship with youths and
plan and maintain health equity regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation
(Hadland,Yehia & Makadon, 2016).
3. As lack of engagement of health care providers and poor attention to gender identity lead
to negative health care outcome, there is a need to use appropriate interview skills to
ensure patients are open with their gender identity. These include taking one-on-one
interviews with a focus on identifying all aspects of their care experience such as
accessibility, equity, acceptability and availability of services. Patient centered approach
is needed during communication so that honest and open interaction about health care
needs take place and patients are not afraid of disclosing their sexual orientation (Chin et
al., 2016).
