A. Values, mission statement and strategic goals of Sydney Local Health District
(SLHD):
SLHD plays a role in delivering health care services to people living in inner west of Sydney
and beyond. The main vision of SLHD is to achieve excellence in health care for all. The SLHD
is based on the values of collaboration, openness, respect and empowerment. This value is
reflected in the culture of SLHD as they focus on delivering patient and family centred care
(NSW Government, 2018). Patient centred care (PCC) is based on the values of respecting
patient’s preferences and needs, coordinating and integrating care, promoting physical comfort,
emotional comfort, continuity and transitions, access to care and information and education. The
patient centred values are aligned to the values of the SLHD and this reflects their success in
improving patient experience and empowering patients during care. Pulvirenti, McMillan &
Lawn (2014) argues that patient centred care is strategy for empowering patients to effectively
critique and provide feedback on quality of care. This also promotes engagement of patients in
care process. Hence, SLHD is likely to achieve the mission of excellence in health care as
adapting PCC is an approach to improve to meet individualized needs of patient and enhance
quality of care.
The strategic goal of SLHD involves delivery of well-balanced, value based, health and
well-being network integrate with community and social care sectors (Sydney Local Health
District, 2018). This goal is in relevance with the mission of the hospital as promoting equity and
high standards of performance will help to achieve the goals of excellence in health care. It is
also in alignment with the values of the organization as PCC will help to provide integrate care.

B. Research priorities of the SLHD:
The main research priorities of SLHD are to conduct world class research in the area of
understanding of disease and illness to better inform health services. The significance of
prioritizing this research area is that it will support leading edge research on education and
medical field. The special focus is on conducting innovative research to continuously learn,
evaluate and thing in new ways to counter disease and illness. The significance of this SLHD is
that the culture and business processed of the LHD favours and support research and innovation.
SLHD is renowned for being wide recognized institute for supporting research role with leading
research groups in the area of biomedical, population health and public health research. The
organization is also supporting research opportunities in nursing field (Sydney Local Health
District, 2018). This is likely to help new nursing students gain innovative idea regarding the
ways to promote health and improve health outcomes of diverse patients with diverse illness. It
will support delivery of high quality community care and inculcating skills required for the same
in nurses. Nursing research would create the pathway for new aspirants to effectively review and
respond to the needs of client based on changes in health care system and patient values. It will
enable developing scientific and practical competencies to excel in nursing practice (Ildarabadi et
al., 2013).
