1LINGUISTIC COMPARISON
Comparison between the text books
The two books namely Managing Communication flow Textual meaning-making and
Creating relationships Interpersonal meaning-making helps to understand the proper usage of
grammar within daily communication. The former book begins with the orientation of ‘nouns’
and ‘nominalization’. The first chapter helps the readers to understand the organizing of a text or
book. The chapter introduces the concepts of mode and metafunction infused within a text (Böck
and Pachler 2013). Textual metafunction is being understood with the deep looking at the
lexicogrammatical resources. Hence, the chapter introduces the importance of clause from the
textual perception that results into building various language development. Along with this, the
chapter provides the important role of language in daily communication. The concept of
packaging is delivered within this book. It is the way to measure the effectiveness of a text’s
ability to communicate the message to the readers or the reviewers. The book skillfully provide
various textual examples including ‘The Sea’ and ‘May in Ayemenem’. The second chapter of
this book delves into the discussion of lexical cohesion. The chapter provides ample example to
analyze the features for what a text can be considered as cohesive and coherent. Hence, the
chapter solely dedicated to differentiate the two terms cohesive and coherent. The book then
continues to develop knowledge on grammatical cohesion. It is the way to weave group of
meanings together. And the final chapter of this book helps to understand the thematic type of
any text. The theme is the process of organizing ideas and information together. The idea is
delivered with two versions of the book ‘Mary Reibey’ with the theme of history infused within
the entire story. On the other hand, the theme of biographical stories are different from those of

The second book introduces the concept of importance of interaction with others. The
first chapter is reflects the relationship of a writer and the readers for whom the text was
intended. The pillar of this relationship is some linguistic feature used by the writer considering
the efficiency level of the readers. This chapter introduces three aspects of tenor that includes –
social roles and relative social status, social distance, and positioning of the speaker and the
writer. The second chapter of the book describes the definition of a text (Leedham 2014). It is
demonstrated with three examples of texts. Here, the chapter provide the two aspects of tenor –
social roles and relative social status. Various speech functions and addressing terms helps to
strengthen the social role and build a strong relation among the community. The difference
between informal and formal language should be kept in mind regarding the speech function and
interacting with the society. The third chapter introduces the functions of positioning and
persuading. The chapter helps to understand that absence of modal resources can impact on the
positioning of the readers and listeners. There should be an exploring level of modalisation to
understand the semantic space among the polar meanings of the terms ‘yes’ and ‘no’. The final
chapter of this book, combines all the concepts of mode and tenor. Here the readers can
understand the depth of functioning of language and its link with meanings and purpose. Here
the chapter introduced the two different concepts of interpersonal metafunction and textual
metafunction. Hence, combining both the concepts of two books it can be said that there are
three key aspects of context for language occurrence that includes field, mode, and tenor.
