LINUX IMPLEMENTATION PROPOSAL
Introduction
The proposal is created for implementation of Linux for Sphynx, LLC that have
created a new research group for the development of new methods of electronic parts
fabrication. The project proposal is created for the migration of the windows platform to
linux operating system for sharing data and files with the research group. Currently the
company uses a Microsoft Active Directory Domain an the new system is needed to use the
domain for getting different services such as DNS, DHCP, File services, Printing and Web
service. The employees working in the company have sound knowledge of using Linux
operating system and they are moved to the new group and thus there is no need of extra
training session for using Linux.
Research and Justification for using existing computer hardware
The existing hardware that is used for the current desktop running Windows XP can
be used for the installation of Linux operating system because the recommended system
requirement for running the latest version of Ubuntu is dual core processor, 2 Gb Ram, 25 Gb
HDD space and display resolution of 1024 x 768. No new hardware is needed for running
ubuntu as the Linux operating system. For running the 64 but version of Ubuntu the 3Gb ram
is needed which is also available for using the current computers running the Windows XP.
For using ubuntu in the GUI mode 4 gb of memory would be utilized and it can be used for
providing visual effects and since the machines are not older than 10 years it would be able to
run all the versions of ubuntu.
Planning from migration from Windows XP to Linux
For the migration of the data for the selected platform a second hard disk should be
installed with the system which should be installed with Linux and it does not requires to
using the windows installation. The Linux operating system can be used for accessing the old

disk and backup the files and data in the new disk and use the old disk for getting backup for
the other computer. The data that is needed to be backed up should be identified and the data
should be saved for using it in future. The Linux operating system should be installed in a
new partition and it would not erase the existing files and this can cause no data to be lost.
Determining the version of Linux and Explanation
For replacing the Windows XP with the Linux operating system Ubuntu is a great
choice because windows XP uses similar hardware as Ubuntu OS. Ubuntu is selected as a
replacement since here the applications can be installed easily and there is no need to surf
internet for getting different software application. The software can be found on the Ubuntu
Software Center, there are different popular programs and alternatives that can be
downloaded freely and it can be installed in a single click. The ubuntu is selected and has the
largest base of user and offers a GUI for management of multiple application.
There are different options available for installation and it can be installed using
CD/DVD, USB Memory stick, Network, Hard Disk or supported storage systems. Before
starting the installation the existing documents and data should be backed up and the booting
media should be selected and the language should be selected for starting the installation
procedure.
Methodology for users logging into the system
The users would log in into the ubuntu system using the domain user account and the
root access to the normal user should be restricted. The domain controller should be used for
the management of the access of the user to use the system.
Systems receiving IP address
For getting the Ip address automatically from the Windows server must be configured
with DHCP service and it can be found from the Ubuntu system from the terminal. The

command “dhclient -d -nw eth0”, can be used for getting the details of the server providing
the IP address.
The Windows server installed in the network is needed to be configured with DHCP
service and a DHCP pool should be set with the range of IP address that is needed to be
assigned to the host connected in the network. The ubuntu host gets the Ip address from the
server by requesting for the IP address.
Accessing of DNS by the new departments
For accessing the DNS service the windows server 2016 is needed to be configured
with the DNS service and it should be configured with a friendly domain name.

The web browser of the ubuntu operating system should be used for reaching the DNS
server. The IP address used for the configuration of the Windows server should be mapped
with the domain name such that the computer connected in the network can use the URL for
accessing the service. For accessing the DNS server the address of the DNS server should
also be inputted in the DHCP pool such that the host can reach the server using the address.
Explanation of files on the network being accessed
For accessing the file from the ubuntu operating system the files application should be
used from the “Activity”, overview and the option other location should be selected from the
side bar. Any computer connected in the network would be discovered from the local area
network and the destination computer should be selected for accessing the files.

LINUX IMPLEMENTATION PROPOSAL
For accessing the files residing in the server the “Connect to server” option should be
used and the address of the server should be inputted in the URL form and the files should be
listed. The listed files can be browsed similarly as the own computer.
Securely sharing file within the user group
For securely sharing the files with the other users connected in the network the user
should be made the member of the group. The folder permission should be changed for
sharing and it can be changed by right clicking on the folder and looking for group
permission and changing the permission to read and write. The users who are given the
permission to access the files should be added from the group and the group of the folder
should be changed to the group intended to share the files and the permission should be
adjusted.
Handling printing
In ubuntu it is a challenging task to configure a printer and for setting the printer
CUPS manager can be used by selecting it from the system > preference menu and then

selecting on the printing option. The selection of the option would open the printer window
and if no printer is listed it should be changed and new printer in needed to be added and the
setting should be modified. The application is also useful for monitoring the existing jobs in
the printing queue, disabling or restarting the printer.
Encryption of data
There are different encryption tool available in ubuntu that can be used for the
encryption of data. The entire disk used for the installation of ubuntu can be encrypted or
separate files and folder can be encrypted and it is selected depending on the security level
needed by the organization. The research information should be encrypted such that the
blueprint cannot be accessed by any third party individual for gaining monetary benefit.
VeraCrypt software is an encryption software that can be used for creating encrypted
container and storing the data under the container.

Using GUI based tools
Since the user are migrating from Windows XP to Linux the use of the GUI based
operating system would be a suitable choice. The graphical user interface would help the user
to interact with the devices using visual indicator rather than text and command lines. It make
the accessible easy as there is no need for the user to memorize the commands intended to
perform specific operation. Thus ubuntu operating system is selected which have a GUI and
can work using terminal for making the user familiar with the migration of the operating
system.
Conclusion
From the above proposal it can be concluded that with the deployment of the ubuntu
operating system as a replacement of the Windows XP would help the organization to
increase the security and efficiency in management of the network. The software licensing
issues can be resolved with the installation of ubuntu and since the support of XP has ended it
has become obsolete and become vulnerable to different ransomware and viruses.
