Abstract
Listening skills need to be present in every individual in order to share and understand
information and make communication more effective. This report has explained about more use of
Zoom application by lectures to enhance knowledge of students so what are the strategies that can be
used to improve their listening skills. It has also suggested about various helps or steps that can be
taken by teachers so that students can easily learn through digital media.

INTRODUCTION
Covid-19 has resulted in more use of digital media and application by teachers to provide
information and knowledge to different student. Zoom was one of the most popular
communication applications that have been used by large number of teachers to provide
education to several students. There are lot of online classes, lecture by specialised and qualified,
knowledgeable professor are given to students so that they can learn new skills and knowledge to
perform different task in personal and professional career. Use of digital media is sudden
changed thereby it is difficult for every individual to learn and accepts. Therefore, this report
discussed about various strategies that can be used by student to improve their listening skills. It
has also explained the way teachers can support, guide and helps students to easily learn and
understand the given knowledge for their future growth and success.
Analysis and discussion of two questions
1Strategies that can be used to improve listening skills of students
Due to corovirus teachers has to change their teaching styles which involves use of more
digital media and innovative technologies such as Zoom application to distribute or share
information to students. There are various challenges that have been faced by teachers as well as
students while teaching student with Zoom app such as lack of listening skills. It is one of the
biggest challenged that student wants to overcome so that they can gave knowledge about
various subject and matter taught by teacher (Celik, 2017). Therefore, various strategies that can
be used by students to improve their listening skills can be illustrated as:
Avoid noise or interruption while listening: The best way to improve listening skills of
student is that they have to select a place in house where there is less chance of noise or
disturbance so that they can attentively listen to information’s provided by teachers. They can
also make of earphone, headphone in order to clearly listen to instruction given by lectures so
that they can learn new skills and knowledge for best future.
Asking question: It is another way or strategy that can be used by students to enhance their
listening skills is that they need to ask various questions to lecture related to subject so that it can
be made interesting. Student by asking question or putting their queries further is able to grab
lecture attention and get deep detailed about specific topic useful for their studies (Erlita, Nuran
and Saragih, 2020).

Eye contact: Students need to make eye contact with lecture and give priority to listen to them
rather than doing various other functions. By avoiding various other functions, activities that are
happening at home at time of classes students can able to listen and grasp more and more
information for getting best job opportunity in future circumstances.
Making notes: It is also effective method that helps in retention of information given by
lectures such as student by writing important points on paper, rough could able to learned and
reviewed whatever teaches by lecture during online class (Fisher and Frey, 2019). Therefore it is
one of the simplest and quick strategies that can be used by students to retained large number of
data, information for longer period of time.
Good knowledge of words: There are various words that are used by Lecture while online
classes so student must have better knowledge of meaning of such words so that there would not
be chance of confusion. But sometimes if student are not able to understand information shared
by lecture then they need to please her to repeat it again or explained it’s further.
Open Mind: Student while attending online classes need to be open minded or mentally free
they should not think anything else otherwise they will not be able to understand what lecture
wants to teach them (Marlina, 2018). Therefore student need not have to judge in advance or
concluded what might lecture may say as it will reduce there attention level to listen to
information.
Student need not to interrupts while lecture is teaching: It means student need to wait for
lecture to stop speaking or teaching in order to put forward their respective queries to avoid
interruption within online class.
2. The way teachers can helps students understand their lectures
Teachers are always there to helps, support and guide their students about particular task,
assessment and activities need to be performed. They also provide various information,
knowledge related to subject so that student can become success person in future career
(Wardhono and Spanos, 2018). But due to change in teaching student are unable to concentrate
and learn new skills, knowledge therefore teachers by improving themselves can helps students
to easily learn. Such as:

It needs to take feedback: It is main responsibility of lecture to take feedback from each student
that they have understood particular information or knowledge given to them or not. By taking
feedback teachers get to know number of student that have understand and other needs support
so that it can formulate effective strategies to enhance their listening and understanding skills. It
can also change its method of teaching or explained in different way that may be easily for
students to understand and learn through digital media.
Asks question related to topic: It can be stated that asking question or taking oral or written test
at end of online class helps student to remind and revise whatever they have learned during
specific lecture (Arshavskaya, 2020). Teacher through putting various questions in front of
students is able to forced them to attentively listen to lectures so that they can give answers in
more appropriate way.
Use of image, diagram to teach: Every student spend large amount of its time in playing online
games, watching videos etc so lecture can make effective use of digital media to enhance
retention power of them. Lecture by making presentation, using more charts, diagram and images
during online classes make students interested to listen to information taught by them (Gillespie
and Toner, 2016). Such innovative medium mostly attract attention of students and helped to
retained information for longer period of time.
Conducting activities: Teachers can help students to understand particular topic by conducting
online activities or providing them assessment to complete so that they make use of their skills,
knowledge and efforts to complete project (Norkunas, 2019). It is best method that have in
generating interest or motivating students to take active part in online class discussion and learn
new knowledge for bright future.
Teacher can make used of different features of Zoom: There are various features provided by
Zoom app to people so that they can easily connect with each other and share information. Such
as Thumb up and down is one of the feature of Zoom application that can be used by lecture to
ensures that number of students that are following or understand whatever teach by her.
Therefore, student by simply touching thumb up button state that they have understand
information provided by lecture (Du Boulay and Luckin, 2016). Another feature is polling which
allows lecturer to make multi choice questions for students in order to check their knowledge.

Speed up and down helps lecture to know whether students are able to understand or following it
or not thus it can change its speed so that students can learn in better way.
Recommendations
From the above discussion and analysis there are several suggestion and
recommendation that can be used by lectures and students to overcome different challenges that
they are facing while learning through digital medium. Therefore some of suggestions on basis
of above discussion are illustrated below:
 Teachers can randomly select specific students to explain particular topic that has been
teaches by lecture in online class (Leong, Singh and Sale, 2016). Thus, student instead to
paying attention to other activities will devote their time and energy in learning things or
grasp knowledge given by lecture.
 Student before online class should read particular topic that will be teach by lecture in
class so that they can have better understanding and share their respective doubts with
teachers. Therefore it can be stated that reading in advance helps them to easily learn
information and resolve their doubts, queries within limited time.
 Both student and teachers need to actively or openly, transparently share their respective
information, queries and problem to each other. As most of the student fear to share their
queries that resulted in poor communication between teachers and students and
ineffective understanding (Spataro and Bloch, 2018).
 Teacher’s needs to listen to student first to have knowledge about student behaviour and
attitude so that they can be provided support and guide lines the way they can learned
through digital media. Therefore, Lecture by personally knowing behaviour and
understanding level of student can easily make changes in its teaching method for better
outcome.
CONCLUSION
It can be concluded from above report that listening is essential part of communication
so individual must have this skill in order to get huge success in career. Increasing number of
online class have encouraged students to enhance their listening skills in order to pass and gained
knowledge. Therefore it can be stated that both students and teachers need to take active part in
online class to make it successful such as teacher should understand students and students should
actively listen to lecturers.
