Listeria Background information
Listeria is a kind of bacteria that can cause serious illness like listeriosis in adults, new
born, pregnant ladies etc. it mostly occurs because of eating contaminated food
Physical Information
Source of the bacteria: These bacteria is mostly found in water and soil which can further
lead to contamination of food or vegetables. Other than this it can also carried within animals
as well and because of which it can also be found in uncooked meat or unprocessed food as
well.
Symptoms associated with the bacteria: it can affect any part of a human body but most
common symptoms of Listeria are fever and diarrhoea which are common to other foodborne
germs or bacteria due to which diagnosis of this bacteria becomes rare. But these symptoms
might vary depending upon whether the person is pregnant or not.
Symptoms of pregnant women: pregnant women normally only feel fever and other
symptoms such as fatigue, muscle aches. It is one of the most dangerous disease for a
pregnant lady as it can lead to miscarriage, still birth, premature delivery, life threatening
issues for new born.
Symptoms of normal person: Such people can feel symptoms such as headache,
confusion, loss of balance, stiff neck, muscle ache, headache, convulsions.
These symptoms starts within 1 to 4 weeks after eating the contaminated food and many
times these symptoms starts as late as approximately 70 days after exposure or many times it
has occurred same day of exposure.
Food in which Listeria can be found are:
Raw milk and dairy products
Refrigerated smoked seafood
Raw fruits or vegetables like sprouts
Soft chest that are mostly made of unpasteurized milk
Guidelines to control these bacteria
Listeria can be controlled or prevented in many ways such as:

By thoroughly cooking the raw meet before eating.
Washing fruits and vegetables completely in a better manner before eating.
Uncooked meat should be kept separately from cooked food, ready to eat food or from
vegetables.
Raw milk should always be avoided or any kind of milk made from raw milk should also be
avoided.
Always wash hands after handling cooked or uncooked food in order to avoid contamination.
Diagnosis and treatment
Listeria is mostly diagnosed when Listeria grows from body tissue or fluid like blood. Its
treatment is provided according to the person who is infected such as:
If a pregnant lady gets infected then then antibiotics are provided to her so that new-born
baby is not infected.
Other adults are provided with a combination of antibiotics after its diagnosis
Babies who are suffering from this disease are provided with same medicines that adults are
given.
If proper treatment is not provided to the patient of wrong treatment is provided to them then
it can result in patients death.
