Beginning of the poem
This is to integrate her mother tongue with her immigration language and by this she indicates
that she is torn between the two languages constantly trying to make a place of her own. By
beginning the poem in Bikol, the local language of Philippines, she tries to integrate that women
are bounded by ethnic backgrounds and this ultimately affects their belongingness to themselves.
Repetition of words
There are certain repetitive phrases like “this is where it begins” and “under my skin” “shiver”
etc. All these words and phrases denotes that how she repeatedly emphasizes on the similar
aspect that since she was small, all the important people in her family often told her things that
made her feel something new i.e. some new sensation which ultimately made her question her
faith and beliefs (Birns, Moore and Shieff, 2017).
Reference to ghost
The ghost here refers to the fear and chilling sensation that the author is experiencing when she

Once author completes all the personal instances that happened with herself, she quickly

states that these instances have happened with all the story tellers and hence the experience is
common for all the writers (Daymond and et.al., 2018). This indicates the fact that she associates
herself with all the remaining storytellers telling that they experience similar sensations.
Identity and culture
Identity and culture can easily be associated and linked with the language that the author is
using. She has begun her poem by writing certain lines in Bikol which indicates that how she can
never leave behind her culture and values instilled in her birthplace i.e. in Philippines despite her
immigration to Australia now. This clearly reflects the constant struggle that she faces and the
consequences that arises out of it.
Storytelling and culture
This poem indicates that how storytelling and its art does not belong solely to the writers’ mind.
It is borne out of the ideas and thoughts that are instilled in them by the older storytellers that are
borne before them (Wilson and Lokugé, 2019). This poem also indicates that how culture
