Literature Review: GCAA Flight Operations E-Archiving Project Impact

Effectiveness of the Project Management Process of the E-Archiving Project Introduced In
Flight Operations at GCAA
According to Ahmadi and Nazim (2017, p.53), electronic archiving improves the
effectiveness and security of digital repositories. Electronic archiving plays an essential role in
managing both private and public information records. Many studies have been conducted to
analyze the impacts of electronic archiving systems on individuals and organizations. E-
archiving majorly entails analyzing how information can be managed as well as how it can be
used to benefit organizations. Electronic archiving is one of the significant steps in
organizational transformations (Ahmadi & Nazim, 2017, p.54). This is because data archived can
be used to make significant corporate decisions. The primary purpose of this literature review is
to examine how the introduction of an e-archiving project will improve the effectiveness of flight
operations.
In a similar study, Shakir and Iqbal (2018) conducted research on digitalization and
Electronic archiving to ascertain how organizations can benefit from electronic archiving. By
analyzing data that they collected through a quantitative research methodology, it was identified
that e-archiving in essential for easy retrieval of information. These researchers concluded that
any document management project, whether public or private, needs to have a digitalized
information instrument to achieve the effectiveness, efficiency, and security of electronic files
(Shakir and Iqbal, 2018, p. 1270). Abdallah and Elhoss (2019) also researched to analyze the
need for electronic archiving in the aviation industry. The findings of the study showed that
aviation managers use electronic archiving systems to obtain data about maintenance records of
aircraft (Abdallah and Elhoss, 2019, p. 20). Besides, proper documentation and archival of

information in the aviation sector improve the relationship among different departments
(Karbasian et al., 2016, p.3000).
These findings support those of a study conducted by kar et al. (2019) regarding cloud
document management systems. As per the survey, e-archiving is essential since it caters to the
needs of airlines and other leasing companies (kar et al. (2019, p.1344). Besides, the findings of
the study also showed that electronic archiving offers search functionalities as well as intellectual
storage capabilities for organizations. Dominiczak & Khansa (2018) also highlighted other
benefits that are associated with electronic archiving projects. These benefits include improved
filling and indexing of aviation records, and improved regulatory compliance and audit quality
(Dominiczak, & Khansa, 2018, p.370). According to Abdallah and Elhoss (2019, p.21),
electronic archiving is an essential aspect of the airline industry for storing and retrieving
information about flight operations. The objective of this literature review was to identify how
the introduction of an e-archiving project will increase the effectiveness of flight operations.
Research has revealed that there are numerous benefits that organizations acquire by introducing
the project. Besides the identified benefits, the project also ensures that only authorized users
have access to flight information. Electronic archiving also enhance the traceability of the stored
data.
From the literature review, it is evident that GCAA will improve the effectiveness of
flight operations by introducing the proposed e-archiving project. Although the existing
literature has revealed that there are numerous benefits that an organization can achieve by
submitting an electronic archiving project, there are still limitations and gaps in the current
research. The major flaw is that very few authors have highlighted the disadvantages of
electronic archiving projects. Ahmadi & Nazim (2017, p.53) state that a company that adopts an

electronic archiving project must be prepared for extra costs on cybersecurity. Time and money
are required to ensure that information is well archived. This poses a big challenge to an
organization since additional funding is needed. Just like implementing an e-archiving system,
maintaining the system is also expensive (Ahmadi & Nazim, 2017, p.53). Moreover, it has been
identified that very few authors focus on the drawbacks that electronic archiving projects have.
This is a gap that needs to be addressed in future studies. One of the organizations that have
adopted electronic archiving project is GCAA. GCAA was formed in 1996 to promote aviation
safety, facilitate air connectivity and serve the aviation industry in a cost efficient and a
responsible manner. GCAA relies on archived data to make important flight decision. Owing to
this fact, there is need for a mechanism that will provide secure information storage and retrieval.
To achieve this objective, GCAA has adopted an e-archiving project for flight operations. The
current research supports the use of electronic archiving in both private and public organizations.
However, there is still a need for further research to be conducted with more strengthened and
consistent methodologies that will justify the need for such projects.
