Literature Review: Database Search for Elderly Depression Studies

This literature review outlines a systematic approach to searching the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Professionals (CINAHL) database for relevant articles concerning the impact of physical activity and exercise on depression in the elderly (individuals over 70 years old). The search strategy involves using keywords such as 'Elderly,' 'Physical activity,' and 'Depression,' combined with Boolean operators to refine the results. Filters are applied to limit the search to specific publication dates (2008-2019), academic journals, and English language articles. The review also incorporates intervention-related keywords and study designs like randomized controlled trials to further narrow the search. Ultimately, the process leads to the selection of six key articles, whose abstracts are carefully reviewed, and their referencing details are meticulously recorded, providing a foundation for further research or analysis on the topic. DATABASES

Part 1 – Go to the Cumulative Index of Nursing and
Allied Health Professionals database
 For searching 6 articles CINAHL complete database was chosen.

Part 2 – Run your search using the keywords
you have developed
 Then using following keywords numerous articles were searched.
 Elderly, People over 70, Physical activity, Exercises, Antidepressant drugs, Fitness,
Reducing depression, Improving quality of life
 Then Boolean operators were used with key words for searching results, such as:
 ( Elderly OR People over 70 ) AND ( Physical activity OR Exercises OR
Antidepressant drugs OR Fitness) AND ( Reducing depression OR Improving quality
of life)
 In this step 250 results were identified

Part 3 – Add some new intervention search
keywords
 Then for limiting search results new keywords were that are:
 (intervention OR program OR programme OR evaluation OR campaign)
 With the help of this new search 185 results were searched

Part 4 – Use filters and limiters
 In order to refine results new filters were applied:
 First of all, results were refined by publication date to 2008 to 2018/19 and with this,
69 articles were identified
 Then order refine more, next filter applied was to identify academic journals only and
with this, 80 articles were identified.
 Lastly filter applied was to select English language journals only and with this, 20
articles were identified

Part 5 – Change ‘All Fields’ to ‘Title’ only
 Next step was to narrow down search results and for this, intervention keyword search
box was changed to title only was used for searching and narrowing down results. With
this, 18 articles were filtered
 Then health outcome keyword search boxes was changed to title only for narrowing
down search results even more. With this, 10 articles were narrowed down

Part 6 – Use one more filters and limiters
 Next part was to change age group filter by narrowing down it to age of 70 years and
older. This provided 6 articles research results now.
 But sill for the remaining results of 100 articles, new keywords were added to search
box

Part 7 – Add key types of study designs used
in intervention research
 Next part was to limit studies as per the required study design in intervention research.
 This was limited to randomized controlled trial OR experimental OR cohort OR
controlled trial. This further limited search results to 29 articles.

Part 8 – Read the title and abstract and choose 1 article
(up to 6 if you can) and download or order them
 In this step abstract of all the articles refined till now were read for selection of
appropriate articles so that 6 important and relevant articles can be selected.
 In this steps after reading abstract, only 6 articles were selected and remaining were
excluded

Part 9 – Referencing details of 6 studies
 This was the last step in which referencing of all the selected articles were done with all
important details.
