ANALYSIS OF “THE WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION”
Characters and the plot of a novel of a story often undergoes a change while
adaptation from the pages to the screen. The character of Romanie had undergone quite
strange changes when the story had been adapted to film. In the short story, there has
been a realization on the part of Mayherne because of Romanie and the part that plays by
showing a foreign gesture. The version of the film provides Mayhew a larger place for
which the characterization of Romnie differs to a large extent (Gale). Moreover, the calm
and less calculative character of Romanie gets change in the adapted version of the story,
the film depicts her as a cold character and provides an impression to the audience that
she is more intent to survive.
Not only in the characters, but there also had been a change in the plot. The actual
story involves the meeting between Emily French and Lenard Vole, and then the murder
of Emily in retrospection. According to the discussion of Robson, however, the
adaptation of the story into the film has a change in the plot. The film includes flashbacks
and incorporates them to engage the audience. There has been utilization of the
flashbacks which clearly report that there had been an interaction between both of them.
In the actual story, the readers rely upon the narration of Leonard. However in the film,
the audience do not have to rely upon his word.
