ABSTRACT
Event management can be defined as the process of coordinating, running as well as planning of all
the people, team as well as resources so that they come together for managing any kind of event.
Event management goes in a flow and if any of the work lacks, then it would highly affect the
event. Olympics is one such event that takes place in every four years. The same applies to London
Olympics that took place in 2012. The event was a success but had a presence of many risks and
innovative factors that were linked with the success of event. The present report thus discusses the
management of overall event being London Olympics 2012. It further measures risk and innovation
factors that operated during the event. Further, it also provides recommendations for managing risk
and innovation during the event.
From this report it can be concluded that event management in case of London Olympics
had a presence of equal effort by all the employees to increase its efficiency level. Further, the
management of London Olympics has played a key role in managing risk. Moreover, robotic
cameras were the best innovation which were used in London Olympics.
From the report it can further be recommended that it is very important on part of management to
have awareness regarding adopting innovation easily. it is very important for the managers to
clearly state the roles and responsibilities which each employees has to play while managing such a
large scale event like London Olympics. Moreover, there are many things which have to be
considered while managing risk. In addition to this, there are many things which have to be noticed
before adopting any innovation. If any sort of problems occur with respect to adopting innovation,
then it would affect the event and would also increase the risk.

1. INTRODUCTION
Event management is application of project management which helps to manage and operate
large scale events like festivals, sports, ceremonies, conferences, concerts as well as formal parties
at specific places (Tang and Musa, 2011). It is important for organisation or individual to manage its
event in an appropriate manner. In the London Olympics 2012, event management played very
important role for managing sport activities in United Kingdom. The present file measures the risk
and innovation issues in operating London Olympics in 2012. Further, it also provides
recommendations for managing risk and innovation during the event.
2. London Olympics
London got three times chance of hosting Olympics that was in the year 1948, 1908 and 2012. It
was in the year 2012 in London became the first city to host modern games thrice. In this event,
there are almost 28 sports conducted in which athletes around the world take part. It was in the year
1994 when the even got cancelled just because of World War 2. Olympics are held at an interval
four years (Rossi, 2014). Last event was held at London and they adopted latest technology and
innovation with the help of which they were able to provide remarkable services to the viewers,
participants as well as to the world. There were almost 301 events held and about 10500 athletes
took part. One of the best innovation which used in 2012 Olympics was robotic cameras. These type
of cameras were very helpful in getting close videos and photographs. Further, Nike also introduces
new type of track suit in which they used lightest fabrics which were very helpful for the
participants.
3. Analysis
This part of report will analyse the management and innovation which took place. This would cover
the steps which would be used by the management so as to provide better services to the viewers
and participants (Kerzner, 2013). Further, it covers the innovations which the management of
operations at London Olympics adopted.
3.1 Risks in operating in London Olympics
Risk definition
Risk can be defined as the possibility of losing something of value. Value can be explained
as reputation, social status and operational efficiency (Nickson, 2013). Event organizers identifies
these all threats and risks through risk theory.
 Identify the risk- Management of event organizers determined these threats through deep
analysis of situation of London Olympics event in the UK. They faced health related,
security, loss of equipments, financial and planning risks in the programme.

 Impact of risks- Generally, it was very higher which was occurred severe effect in London
Olympics. Employees faced heavy work load condition in the event. In addition to this,
public suffered many issues regarding service and facilities in the programme (McDonald,
2012).
 Were exiting controls adequate- In that time, exiting controls were not proper due to many
issues in management like lack of resources and shortage of staff members and equipments
etc. in the programme.
 Record- Event organizers did not record proper plan during the London Olympics event. So

 Review- Evaluation of event was not appropriate due to heavy work load on managers. Due
to this reason, leaders could not completed their roles and responsibilities during London

Sanitation of even place was not proper which created huge complexities for visitors in the
United Kingdom. These risks also created bad impact on the image of country. It generated

 Security risk- It was the biggest risk for event planners in the London Olympics event. Lack
of security of arrangement created fire explosion in the event place (McPherson and Pincus,
2011). In addition to this, event planners did not have proper security guard to manage
security for people in the ground as well as other areas. This type of thing generated huge
loss of public property and citizens. It also increased huge risks during the event. It also

instruments theft during live event due to lack security management system (Smith, Rahn

and Wang, 2010). This thing also created issues for event planners in the programme. In
addition, it generated loss for money for management which increased cost of event in the

swimming (Trkman, 2010). These cameras are capable of capturing photos or videos below or
above the water. Moreover, there is a camera which was designed in Japan which is very helpful in
capturing images above and below the water level so as to get a perfect picture. Earlier, it was very
difficult to take photograph of athletes when they were on to the competition. But improvement in
technology has helped in innovating cameras which are capable of taking picture even if athletes are
competing for any race. In simple words, it was very difficult to take motion pictures. But know,
with the help of innovation in cameras, London Olympics are able to take motion pictures and that
also above or below water (Arnold, 2011). Mostly it was difficult to take photos of swimming
competitions. But now with the help of innovation in cameras, they are able know how participants
perform under water as well.
Track suits: Nike have come up with suits which are lighter than any of the track suits. This
innovation done by Nike is very helpful for the participants to put on their full efficiency as they
need not to carry the weight which they had to with their old track suits. In addition to this, these
suit is helpful in providing the used of advantage of about 0.043 seconds. This difference can be
compared as similar with gold and platinum (Wheelen and Hunger, 2011). Earlier, these types of
suits were heavy and because of which the participant found difficulty in performing their race
properly. But innovation has helped them in solving their issue and in this context, Nike has
developed the lightest fabric which are very helpful for the participants.
No more false start: New blocking start has been introduced which are very helpful in measuring
the force applied by the participants. Earlier, they used to note down the movement made by the
participants which always resulted in false start, but now with the help of new device they are able
to have a perfect start.

Designing and architecture: They have design the stadium in such a way that they have shown all
the track with the finest material on which participants would be comfortable enough to participate
effectively. In addition to this, also for the viewers they have also focused on the sittings and
focused on providing the viewers to have comfortable and enjoyable moment (Shang, Lu and Li,
2010). They always make changes in their designing and architecture, but this time they have
completely changed the stadium and provided more improved and innovative stadium which would
be helpful for both participant as well as viewers.

of comfort to the viewers as well as participants. In addition to this, in London Olympics has used

To overcome from security risk, event organizers should use proper CCTV cameras for

of local police and military forces to manage higher security in the ground and other fields. There
