Lorde’s narrative is significant because to date the African Americans still face
discrimination on the basis of their skin color. The racists tend to think that just because a person
is black it is obvious that they do not fit in the society. The racists feel superior and no matter
how learned a black person is such society will still look down on them.
The narrative significantly encourages African Americans to remain strong when they
face discrimination knowing that they are not alone and this has nothing to do with their
personality. It also reminds them that the discrimination doesn’t make them lesser people. It
significantly points out to the black people that the problem does not lie with them. It definitely
lies with the mindset of racists who can’t seem to get out of their own bondages of racism,
(Evans, 2019).
This narrative also points out the fact that the color of one’s skin cannot be an obstacle to
great achievements in life, for instance, Lorde’s family was still able to travel to Washington D.C
despite being left behind by the school bus because of her skin color.
Racism is a disease that is still eating up many parts of the world. It’s not just the skin
color that people discriminate; there are a lot of things including language and ethnicity among
others that people discriminate. Lorde’s narrative significantly points out that the person being
discriminated has nothing to do with this, instead, the discriminator is to blame for their mind
set, (Levy, 2013).
I also think that the American people should be fair enough to know that no one chooses
the color of their skin. It is something given to you by your creator and there is nothing one can
do to change that. That should be reason enough to make a racist think twice before
discriminating a person based on their skin color. I also think that there are several Africa

Americans that are much smarter than the Americans hence there should be no reason at all to
discriminate such based on the skin color. Americans should be fair enough to embrace people
from different backgrounds.
