The concepts which I will choose in order to analyze the film Lost in Translation are:
Participatory Culture
The Film Lost in Translation depicts the participatory approach to its viewers as Bob and
Charlotte, the hero and the heroine of the film depicts the sense of motivation among the young
minds to stand by the choices that made by them. The participatory approach is evident in the
bonding that is created between Bob and Charlotte as both their love story raises a feeling of
ownership among its viewers and results in the empowerment of the entire community of people
across the globe. The characters depicted the inherent problems that lies within the different
layers of our society and its underlying solutions in order to resolve those set of problems.
The solutions depicted to the underlying problems has been able to increase the chance of
the implemented solutions that will be used by the people in the society. This involves the age
old systems that are for long perceived to be most inconvenient and also finds difficulty in the
operation measures or in other ways they will not be able to correspond to the different needs
and the preferences of the characters who are adapted to the societal risks that they face in their
day to day life. The participatory approach of the film Lost in Translations have been able to
bring to together the representatives of the local stakeholders of the community.
Flow
The Film has reflected a smooth and a steady flow of the ideas of the director one after
the other. The film is set around the plot where Bob has the background of being the aged
American star who has arrived in Tokyo for his advertisement project for Suntory whiskey. On
the other side the heroine Charlotte is an young graduate whose solitude is clearly depicted in the
way in which she sits bored in a dull hotel room after her husband, John is away from their home

for an assignment in Tokyo. As time passed, Charlotte became unsure of her future days with her
husband John as she felt detached every time from her husband John due to their lifestyles which
led a disillusionment in their relationship. The background of the film itself has depicted a swift
flow in the ideas where the background situation will make both the characters read for a new
relationship in their life. The plot also said that after Bib arrived in Tokyo each day he
encountered Charlotte in the hotel room and both of them suffered from insomnia. The problem
of insomnia between both the characters reveal that both Bib and Charlotte are unhappy and
restless about their current life from which bit needed an urgent break.
Cross Cultural Flows
The cross cultural flow is the central focus of the film and this is the main reason why the
film has such a title ‘Lost in Translations’. The hero Bob is the Japanese director and the young
college graduate Charlotte are both lost in the alien nature of their Japanese culture. In their
individual lives both of them are lost in their own lives and relationship problems that they have
faced where their feelings have been amplified by their displaced location and the emerging
blossoming friendship with the growing level of connection between Bob and Charlotte. The
film has also depicted the conflicted feelings between both the characters (Rodgers, 2018).
As described by Murray, at the initial stage Bob knew that it would turn dangerous if he
went too close to Charlotte. But his feelings are in continuous conflict because at the same time
he realizes that he is lonely in his own personal life and an affair could save him from the
melancholy situation. This reflects the element of balance between the attribute of being
affectionate and at the same time being respectable to oneself. The film has refuted the concept
of modernity in which Tokyo is that region of the world which is ‘floating’ in terms of its
fleeting pleasures that will be amoral to facilitate the cross cultural flow in the society.

Embodiment
The Film Lost in Translations depicts the main idea of crossing the cultural and the
societal barriers in order to search for happiness among the individuals. It also sets a barrier
against the concept of modernity that prevails in the modern day Cinema. As this film is set in
the background of post romance that offers the negative attribute towards love romance or sex or
the concept of dating among the young people. So the characters in this film has stood against
the idea of the idealized love or the monogamy that two people have to face on a lifelong basis.
In fact the idea that the plot of the film is in Tokyo has highlighted the idea of audiovisual
metaphor as Tokyo is the contrasting element to the ideas of Bob and Charlotte in this film. The
calm ambience of the city of Tokyo represents the never ending desires of Bob to the secured
and the undisturbed manner in which the most energetic atmosphere of the city has represented
Charlotte’s desire to engage with the outer world. Therefore the film is said to reveal that the
clear visual expressions in order to support the element of romance among the main characters of
the film (Elliott, 2020).
One to many or many to happy
The film has beautifully highlighted the journey of both Bob and Charlotte to find inner
peace and individual happiness amidst the chaos of society and that of the outside world. Their
initial bonding starts in Tokyo after both of them spend a night together in fun and gossips and
share an intimate conversation about the personal troubles that Charlotte has faced in her life and
Bob shared about his married life problems. A few days later Bob and Charlotte reconcile each
other and expressed to each other on about how they miss each other. The film was based on the
theme of on point connection. Their love story is based for the brief timeline during which they

realized that both of them stay happy with each other in their life. However die to certain
compulsory circumstances both of them had to depart from each other at the end of the film. The
story is more about the fact ‘I just can’t` tell you that revolves around the entire plot.
Though the feelings between both of them were conflicted and had to end at last.
However in the short span of time, both Bob and Charlotte have found out their ultimate love and
joy of their lives (Guneratne, 2016).
Horizontal and the Vertical Integration
The film of Lost in Translations has also depicted the concept of chiaroscuro which refers
to the art of the application of strong and deeper level of contrasts between the light and the dark
themes in order to support the basic theme of the story. The dominant aspect of the film revolves
around the lighter tones of humor and romance that is contrasted with the darker tones of the
underlying feelings of despondency. The film has also covered various aesthetics attributes like
those of dress that Charlotte wears which is a light pink attire that has been compared on various
occasions to the painter John Kacere. This comparison brings the significant light to the existent
level of the language differences in the context of the prevailing complexities that are involved
around the characters who speak multiple languages. The comparison marks an obvious appeal
in the potential form of eroticism and the subtle appeal embedded in the artistic qualities of both
