INTRODUCTION
Sustainability practices are very essential for the success of the business. This include activities
such as energy conservation, environmental conservation, waste material management and water
conservation. Organizations should formulate various policies to enhance the implementation of
sustainable activities within the organization. The policy should be formulated by the experts
who have a thorough knowledge in the business sustainability practices for effectiveness.

Initiatives for sustainability for Mac Ville
The company had committed itself in coffee retailing during its market penetration in the
beverage based market using its formulated strategies. The company was disappointed because
of lack of efficiency for the formulated strategies hence the company had to take an immediate
action to ensure that the formulated strategy was effective to enhance the achievement of the
formulated goals and objectives by the company.
The company commenced with the field of water management where the strategies formulated
were evaluated thoroughly to ascertain the effectiveness towards the achievement of the set goals
and objectives. The company evaluated the electrical department as well since water and
electricity are vital components for the effectiveness of operations within the company hence
they had to be given the first priority by the company. Furthermore, water and electricity is very
important for enhancing sustainable practices within the environment.
Bell& Morse (20 12) state that in order to achieve water sustainability the initiatives shown
below are very important:
 There should be a reduction in the water wastage.
 Water should be recycled.
 Water should be conserved for further usage.
The achievement of electricity sustainability requires the following initiatives which are
vital:
 Enhancing the usage of appliances that are save energy.
 Using the system of refrigeration that is energy efficient which implies doing away
with the old refrigeration system.

 Creation of awareness among the employees in the company on the effective use of
electricity especially using electricity when it is necessary and informing them on the
need to switch off the lights and other appliances that use electricity such as fans
when they are not in use.
According to Choi & Turk (2011) the sustainability initiatives should not only be stressed in the
field of water and electricity but should also be considered in the area in relation with: sourcing
of raw materials to facilitate production in the company, management of waste products and
avoiding environmental pollution.
The most important initiatives by the company include:
 Enhancing sustainability in agriculture through: reduction in the amount of pesticides
used in the production of raw materials, educating the farmers on practices which are
agriculturally friendly keeping in mind the economic gain which enhance an
improvement in the standard of living among the farmers. This is important because it
shall enhance sustainability in the sourcing of raw materials.
 Enhancing sustainability in the management of waste through the generation of biogas
energy from the waste rather than abandoning them to decompose without proper plans
resulting to environmental pollution. The biogas which is generated from the waste
materials usually facilitate sustainability in electricity. The company can place garbage
collection centers for various types of wastes from the company which might facilitate
the recycling process and furthermore some of the waste products might be used as
manure in the farms which enhances an environmentally friendly application of the waste
materials.

The models that are very suitable to the given industrial setting are: the three overlapping circle
model which is clearly discussed in the case study and the 3-nested –dependencies model.
The three overlapping circle model
This model enhances the resizing of the circles (economy, society and environment) in the
manner that is preferable by the industry and in its preferable mindset (Thow, Annan, Mensah &
Chowdhury, 2014). The economy is usually outlined as the biggest circle of all since it enhances
the organizational gain than all the rest. The society is represented by the next circle which is
usually smaller as compared to the economic circle and it comprises of the general consumers
and all the other important stake holders for the company. The smallest circle usually represent
the environment which is usually perceived as the most external component to the standard
model of the business.
The 3 overlapping circle model is the most efficient model that enhances sustainability of
business practices, however, it has one major limitation where there is possibility the
economy to depend on the society and the environment reducing the effectiveness of
sustainability practices.
The 3-nested-dependencies model
According to Grindle (2017) this model basically creates an emphasis on the issues raised by the
initial model. The model addresses the economic, social and environmental aspects of
sustainability which were also addressed by the 3 overlapping circle model and In addition, the
3-nested dependencies model perceives all the three aspects as equally important which are
interconnected for the efficiency in the achievement of sustainability in business.

The current policy used by the company has various limitations that need to be seriously
addressed with immediate effect. The limitations are:
 Lack of a clear code of conduct which is an essential component for a sustainable
organization.
 Lack of efficiency in the consumption of the available resources such as water and
electricity within the company
 Lack of robust policy which results to the poor management of wastes in the company.
 A sustainable organization has to collaborate with other organizations which is usually
effective through a formulated policy which the company do not have. This is usually
important it enhances purchasing decisions of the company.
 Absence of recycling policy which is usually a vital aspect for a sustainable organization.

From the discussions above, it is evident that the current policy used by Mac Ville in its
operations requires some amendments to achieve sustainability.
The new policy should address the following key issues:
 Cooperation with the farmers who use organic products to reduce the organic waste
environmental pollution during the agricultural activities for coffee beans production.
 To enhance the production of biodegradable products such as plates, cups and straws
making it an essential requirement for all the retailers in the country.
 Promotion of energy conservation practices such ass switching off the lights and air
conditioners when they are not in use, this practice should be made an essential practice
for all the employees in the organization.
 The organization should set the scope for energy consumption for each worker and
ensuring close supervision to ensure it is adhered to.
 Formulating good practices for managing the waste products such as effective disposition
of waste generated during the process of production and enhancing the recycling of waste
within the organization.

creation of an effective policy. It is usually necessary for the experts to have a thorough
knowledge during the formulation of such policies and address the following issues:

 The ability of the organization to train its employees on the sustainable business practices
