Changing face in the Canadian families

In the last two decades there had been a
gradual change in the families in Canada,
where individuals are preferred to stay
single rather than starting a family. As
people in the present days are more career
oriented, therefore the first preference of
every individual to achieve their goals and
objectives (Browne et al., 2018).
Another major family issue in Canada is
In the last twenty years, there is an increase in
the common laws unions and conjugal
relationship has become one of the major
things in Canada.
Apart from this, with the increase on the rate of
divorce, there has been a higher rate of re-
marriage also. As per the recent data, it has
been found that 9% Canadian children fewer
than twelve years of age are living in a step

the increase in the number of single parent
families. As per the recent data, 83% of the
single parent family are run by women
(Wallace, 2017).

that in the modern days, more children are
growing in blended families.
With the higher number of divorce, there has
been a recent trend of blended families in
Canada. Sometimes children face difficulties in
adjusting in their blended family and as a result
they are not been able to create a strong

With the increase in the number of effective
contraceptives, there had been a delayed in
childbearing among Canadian women. Moreover
women in the present days are much more career
oriented, so they do not feel the urge to start a
family at an early age.
Research observed that the main
reason related to child bearing is
because of the change in women’s
status in the society that is job, career,
and opportunities. As per the report by
Statistics Canada, it could be seen that
52.3 babies are born to women
between ages thirty-five to thirty-nine
(Teatero et al., 2015). With this latest
trend in the child bearing process in

In the present day, women tend to deliver their first
baby at least after age of thirty-four. This has
changed the family system in Canada and has been
a major issue of Canadian families (Mitchell, 2017).
Canada, there are fewer children and
older mothers in Canada.
Another factor that has a connection
with delayed in child bearing is the
easier access to divorce for couples
affects the birth of the child and that
result in lesser number of children in
Canadian families.

Functions of the Canadian Family

The functions of the Canadian families are
similar to that of the functions in the US
families and most of the families are nuclear
families consisting of one or two parents and
their kids. In the twenty-first the functions
among the Canadian families have changed,
there tends to be more common-law families
than a proper family (Mallya & Fiocco, 2017).
As per the data, 15.9% children tend to live
with common law parents and in the present
day, the number has tripled (Masten & Monn,
2015). Accordingly with the legalization of the
same sex marriage in Canada, there has been
diversity in the families of Canada.
Family consist to be an important
socialization process mainly for the children,
as children tends to learn values and traditions
from their family.
In the present day as families have shifted
towards more single parent and common law
families, children are not being able to learn
the basic social values from their family.

It is important to note that in the recent time,
with the changing nature in the family structure,
pressure of workplace and increase in social
networking have created a gap between the
relationship of the parent and child relationship.
As per the recent report, it has been showed that
children do not get the unconditional love and
support from their parents, therefore they tend
to seek love and support from other person.
This has widened the gap between parents and
their kids. As per the ranking of the World
Health Organization, Canada in terms of parent-
child relationship ranks at the bottom.
As both the parents in the family are
working parents, therefore children do not
get time to share their feelings with their
parents and thus this has widened the gap
between child and parents (Styles, 2016).
Apart from this in the present day, parents
do not believe in the traditional parenting
styles. According to the modern Canadian
parents mixing with their kids as friends
will tends to provide positive outcomes.
This is not true, besides being friends;
parents should also teach their children the
right values and sometimes need to
provide restriction to their freedom.

With the increase in large number of people
from different cultures and traditions in
Canada, the Government is facing problem to
hold to a particular tradition and culture.
From 2011 to 2016, approximately 2.6 million
immigrants have settled in Canada that has
contributed to diverse and linguistic culture in
Canada.
Moreover, people in Canada are getting
influenced from different cultures and this
turned Canada into ethno cultural place. As
a result families are not being able to teach
particular culture and tradition to their
children (Mallya & Fiocco, 2017).

Subject: Advice regarding Parenting Issues in Canada
Respected Sir,
This is to bring to your notice that in my previous letter I mentioned the parenting
issues and as a result parents and children are not been able to communicate with each other
freely.
Therefore, parents should change their parenting style in order to reduce the
communication gap between parents and children. Parents could implement authoritative
parenting styles that would keep a balance between the desire of their children to be
independent and the desire of parents to be listened to. As a result, children in this style are
considers as the best adjusted children. Hence, this style of parenting can help to address
parenting issues in Canada.
