Academic Article: The strategic pursuit of mix flexibility through operators' involvement in
decision making.
Journal: International Journal of Operations & Production Management.
Author: Corinne M. Karuppan, Sven Kepes
Year: 2006
Discussion Topic: “Management is the pursuit of flexibility.”
The main aim of this article is to understand the growing competitiveness in the
market and the need for flexible resource and appoint flexible and strong decision-making.
The article has exhibited the influence of speed and flexibility in the performance in the
organization, which is possible through a well-trained employee. Therefore, the article clearly
states the importance of flexibility and a strong workforce to survive in the current
competitive market (Karuppan and Kepes, 2006).
According to Quinn, Clair and Faerman and their CVF model, this has been analyzed
that in the organizations of today and their leaders have to be flexible and adaptable, it is very
important to have a strong control both internally and externally, along with a stable approach
(Quinn, Clair, and Faerman, 2015). The article has also exhibited the importance of stability
in the formulating decision in the organization and also for incorporating flexible new
approaches.
According to my past experience of working in a clothing outlet, I identified the need
of flexible approaches as each customer is different with a different set of needs and tastes,
therefore, it was crucial for me to alter myself according to the customers. From my
experience, I also identified that flexible approaches also help in managing the behaviors of

the customers, especially their mood swings and attitudes. According to all these aspects, I
also have to ensure that I follow the rules and guidelines of the organization and fulfill their
organization’s objectives. This experience of working in a clothing store helped me to
understand the need for flexibility for managing customers.
