Introduction
The essay will highlight some of the skills and expertise that would be required by an individual
for a career in management. This essay would explain the skills that one needs to develop for a
management career where communication plays an important role. Hence a career in
management which would lead to a managerial position in the future would require an individual
to develop certain skills like their written and verbal communication skills, team working skills,
analytical skills, resume writing skills, job interview skills etc. Being a leader is not an easy task
and requires an individual to have effective communication skills. Communication skills develop
with the development of interpersonal skills, business writing skills, team working skills, resume
writing skills, job interview skills and oral skills. These are some of the skills that I would need
to develop for getting selected in a good position in a reputed company and the interpersonal and
communication skills for managerial roles would need to be developed throughout my career
(Locker and Kaczmarek, 2009).
A. Subjects for chosen career path
The subject that I would be discussing in this particular paper is business communication and
interpersonal skills which are two of the major subjects in the field of management since an
individual would never be able to succeed in a managerial role without interpersonal skills and
great business communication Skills. This paper would also study some of the professional
development theories. Professional development forms an important part of curriculum in
management studies since students need to develop their professionals skills like communication,
interpersonal skills, resume writing and team working skills in order to attain competitive
advantage in the professional world. Hence the main aim of professional development is
changing the professional thinking and professional development mainly aims at behavioral
component, attitudinal component and the intellectual component. The most important term that
has been associated with the concept of professional development is continual professional

development which helps an individual to engage in the learning process throughout their
professional lives. Professional develop also helps in improved learning, increased participation,
since individuals involved in professional development throughout their lives are likely to
participate actively in their profession and communicate with others in a better way (Jones and
Alexander, 2000).
For the Career that I have chosen that is management I would need to work on my interpersonal
skills and my communication skills. Some of the most important skills that I would need to
develop are resume writing and business writing skills. These skills would help me acquire a
good job as a resume and a cover letter are the first point of contact with a candidate thus a
resume should be impressive enough to catch the attention of the employers. While working in a
team one has to communicate, plan, solve problems and negotiate. Hence while working in a
team i would need to improve these skills for enhancing my communication and team working
skills. Some of the subjects that I would need to study for acquiring a degree in business
management are business law, economics, finance, Human resource management, marketing,
management information system, ethics, entrepreneurship, business communication etc. These
are some of the subjects that would prepare an individual for the path to success in the field of
management. However these subjects also help in the development of skills that are important
for a future in business management (Locker and Kaczmarek, 2009).
B. Identification and discussion of the key skills for the chosen career
The main skills that are helpful for professional development in any kind of profession are
interpersonal skills, communication skills, business writing skills, team working skills, job
interview skills etc. These are the very basic skills that an individual needs to develop for
professional growth and sustenance in any industry. Communication plays an important role in
professional development in any chosen career whether in a managerial role or in the teaching
profession. Individuals who have limited interpersonal skills are less likely to succeed in the
professional world. Similarly I would need to develop my business communication skills and
focus on personal development with these five life skills which are self belief, communication,
self management, team work and problem solving skills (Jones and Alexander, 2000).

Team working skills
Communication and team working skills are important in today’s work scenario since team
working is an inevitable element in today’s work environment where individuals need to work
and excel as a team. More over team working is also important for leadership roles since an
individual not experienced in team working would never be able to lead a team. The better an
individual works with others in a team the more likely is the team to flourish and succeed in
achieving its goals. Tasks and works need collaboration from team members for their successful
completion. Hence team working is an important aspect of personal development studies and
hence is focused upon from the very beginning in one’s career (Locker and Kaczmarek, 2009).
Schools also involve team building activities in order to help children develop team working
skills from the very beginning. By the time ones gets involved in professional courses
communication and team building becomes two of the major elements of growth and success in
the professional world. However the most important aspect of developing team working skills
among individuals is communication skills and interpersonal skills. Individuals lacking
interpersonal skills and effective communication skills are unlikely to work in a team
environment. Interpersonal skills are the skills that an individual uses in his/her day to day
interactions. These are the skills that are associated with emotional intelligence of an individual
which helps in managing one’s own and others emotions (Alshare, 2011).
Development of business writing skills
The next skill that I would need to develop would be business writing skill. This is a form of
non-verbal communication and is very crucial for professional development in any field. My
management degree would allow me to attain a job role in the management segment in any
company and hence I would be responsible for carrying on verbal as well as non-verbal
communication with my team members (Fordham and Gabbin, 1996). This would involve
business writing skills. In our business communication paper we would be studying the
importance of developing business writing skills. Business writing skill development starts with
removing any kind of emotions from our business writing style since this is altogether a different
skill from academic writing. In business writing one needs to separate information, substance,
content of a document from the actual information and content of the business writing. One must
focus on the information that needs to be passed on to the reader. In business writing one must

also learn to reflect on the words that are used in the expression of the information. Hence in
order to develop my business writing skills I would need to learn to define the audience clearly,
state the purpose of the document clearly, and arrange the information in a logical format. In
business writing one must understand that the most important information should cover 90% of
the business document and other irrelevant information should be removed. The main reasons for
the development of business writing skills are the overall improvement of workplace
communication skills. In the workplace communication plays an important role since it helps in
demonstrating business intelligence of an employee and helps them to boost their professional
career. Business writing development would also enable companies to build a solid web presence
in the market which ensures growth of a business in today’s challenging business environment
(Alshare, 2011).
Development of Oral skills
Oral skills or public speaking skills form an important part of personal and professional
development programs. Oral skills form an important part in business communication. Oral
communication can be best defined as the spoken interaction that takes place between two or
more individuals. Effective oral communication skills help team members as well as leaders to
convey business messages and their personal views regarding business. More over an effective
communicator is also likely to communicate confidently both in a professional and personal
environment. Hence for being successful in a formal work environment one needs to develop
verbal communication skills. A career in management would require me to develop my oral
communication skills. Sales presentations, team presentations, motivational speeches etc would
need an employee to develop great communication skills and that also oral communication so
that he/she can convey important messages to the target audience. Being in the management field
I would need to develop great oral communication skills so that I can convey important messages
to the targeted audience during team meetings and presentations. However for developing great
communication skills I would need to pick up the right content and organize the presentation so
that I can present the ideas in a better way to the targeted audience (Conrad, 2011).
Analysis and presentation of basic information
Document Page
This is an important skill that helps an individual to present information in a better way. In any
job role and mainly in a managerial position one needs to analyse and present basic research
information to the target audience and without proper presentation skills one would not be able
to acquire the desired results. I would be needed to conduct research on various subjects even in
my academic courses and would need to present information. My subject business
communication would help me in learning the way information is presented in a formal and
analytical way. Analytical presentation of information would also help an individual to progress
in his/her career path (Jones and Alexander, 2000).
Resume writing skill and job interview skills
Resume writing skill is the first thing that one learns in business communication since it helps a
candidate to present information about self in a formal way and since it is the first point of
contact with an organization a resume should be well structured with the correct information.
Resume writing is a part of business communication as it helps in communicating in the first
place. A well-structured resume will help me to introduce myself to the target audience. Job
interview skills need to be attained by students of management and any other discipline. Some of
the skills that would make me ready for a job interview are work ethics, positive attitude, time
management skills, communication skills and self-confidence (Fordham and Gabbin, 1996).
Team working skills
This is an important aspect of interpersonal skill. Development of interpersonal skills would help
me to work efficiently within a team and share cordial relation with all the team members. A
team consists of different roles according to Belbin’s theory which describes that a team has a
shaper, implementor, completer, coordinator, team worker, plant monitor and specialist. Hence
top work in a team efficiently I would need to take on any of the team roles or roles in order to
help the team achieve its objective. Hence for assuming these roles I would need to work on my
communication and interpersonal skills which would be the most important part of my personal
development plan.

Conclusion
Thus the paper highlights some of the important business communication skills that need to be
achieved by individuals for career progression. All the skills developed here are business
communication skills that help an individual to communicate freely in the business environment.
However development of business communication skills in the very beginning requires one to
listen, hear and understand before one embarks onto the journey of learning professional skills
for communication in the business environment. Hence all the skills that would be required to
prepare an individual for the job market have been discussed in detail in the paper.
