INTRODUCTION
Management refer to managing and controlling different things of a company so that the
firm can operate and run in effective way. In context of a company, management is a process and
procedure to deal with the activities & operation and people of the firm. Operations management
is an activity of managing, scheming and dominant the process of manufacture and plan business
operations in term of manufacturing products and services (Bromiley and Rau, 2016). This
assignment is based on Corus group Ltd which is steel manufactures. This organisation was
developed in 1999 and headquartered in London. It operates its business in different nations with
the help of its products like electro plated, tubes, bars and others. This report will discuss about
role of a leader and purpose of a administrator. Further, will explain about different theories and
approaches of operations management. Different factor which make over effect upon
determination devising of leaders and manager will also describe.

P1. Define and compare the different roles and characteristics of a leader and a manager
1.1 Two academic definitions of leader
Definition of leader- According to Harry S. Truman, leader is a person who can
influence individual to do what they don't deprivation to do, or do what they are excessively
faineant to do and like it. Simply, leader indicate to a person who encourage people and
individual to do work which are not showing their interest to do work.
According to Grace Hopper, leader cannot manage people into battle, the individual
manage things and guide and lead people.
Characteristics of leader
Stewart Butterfiled is the founder of Slack and the characteristics of Butterfiled are
defined as following:
Hard worker- It is the important characteristic of Stewart Butterfiled as a leader. To get
learning and knowledge, Butterfiled joined Janson Classon's start-up,Grafinger.com. In 2013,
the person launched a team messaging application Slack with own hard work (Chiarini and
Vagnoni, 2015).

passion and dream in reality by launching Flickr, a photo sharing website and Slack a team

management theories in different situations of business operations which is operated by the
individual. For example, in different kind of situations Butterfield play different role such as
leader and manager as per the situations. They are as follows:
Rapid change- In market place there are various kind of changes occurred due to change
in taste and preference of customers. For example, to monitor the change and requirement of the
people, Butterfield develop Slack, a team messaging application to provide satisfaction to the
needs of individuals and organisation (Hitt, Xu and Carnes, 2016). There are various
applications which are helpful to share information but they are used for their normal
communication so the chance of sharing information with others are high. Due to which a
situation created leakage of information. With the help of leadership and management skills

Conflict resolution- It is another situation which is highly affect the business of
companies and individual also. If the leader and manager of a company share any information to
team members and any member of the team was not get information then there are high chance
of raising problems and issues (Mahadevan, 2015). So by using their leadership and management
skill Butterfield design team messaging application. Which is helpful to overcome conflict
resolution situation.
To overcome these kind of situation, Butterfield can use classical theory of management.
With the help of it, they can manage information regarding team members and share with the

There are various concepts that can be use by Stewart Butterfiled to manage and
influence employees of the company so that they can feel motivated and use their efforts and
effectiveness for the growth and development of the organisation. Different theories and models
to situations within to work environment are as following:

3.1Situational leadership theory- This theory is formulated by Paul Hersey to deal with
different situations. It mentions to an approach of leadership in which functions and actions
perform by leaders according to the situation. This approach involve four leading form such as
telling, selling, participating and delegating. With the help of it, Butterfield can develop plans
and policies according to the situation and provide a structured work in which employees can
perform effectively as per the situation.
Leadership role- In this leadership theory, leader play an effective role by developing
and designing plans and policies according to the situation so that they can perform properly to
attain objective of the company (Meindl, 2016)(Reid and Sanders, 2015).

manner as to be the part of organisation.
3.3 Fiedler's Contingency Model- This model and approach of leadership is developed by Fred
Edward Fielder to measured the competencies and encouraging the employees of the firm.
Butterfield can use this theory for the motivation of the workers of the organisation so that they
can make their participation to accomplish set objectives appropriately. This approach of
leadership can be used by the leader as per the situation and skills of the workers.

Corus to follow this approach (Uhl and Gollenia, 2016). For example, to manage the inventory

insure appropriate customer outlets accessible to purchase products so that they can manage the
stock. To manage waiting time, they can also use this approach and with the help of it they can

customers on time, they can minimise waiting time of customers. In this approach leader
establish performance measurement process to monitor the performance of employees. Whereas
