INTRODUCTION
Management operation in which it is an area of management which is concerned with
designing and creating the process of production and also it help to redesigned the business
operation. The present study is based on Premier INN Hotel London which is a British hotel
chain and also UK's largest hotel . It was founded in 1987. it has 72,000 rooms and 785 hotels. It
operates in variety of location and it is famous for providing excellent services to its customers.
It will include the roles and characteristics of leader and manger and also it will examine the role
and function of manager and leader by applying in different contexts. Further it will include the
different theories such as situational leadership , system leadership and contingency leadership. It
will also include the key approaches of operational management and the role that leader and
manger play. It will also discuss the importance and values of operations management in
achieving business objective. And at last it will assess the business environment that impact
operational management and decision making by leader and manger.

P1 The different roles and characteristics of a leader and a manger
Leader – A leader is basically a person who leads the team and do all the possible efforts to
attain the goals of the organisation. He is the person who has the ability to guide and motivate
individual and also influence them in an positive manner. He is the one who convinces other
people and take decisions by discussing with its team members. Leader plays an important role
in the organisation as it give right direction to its member and focus them towards the goals
(Nordal, 2016)
Role – As leader of Premier INN Hotel London perform various role which are very different
from the manager such as -
Representative of the organisation – the first and foremost role of the leader is to
represent the organisation as it attend various seminars , functions , general meeting. As his role
is communicate the rationale of the enterprise to outside public. Also he represents its own
department as he represent in positive and affective way.
Create Vision – the second role that is perform by the leader is to create the vision as he
is the person who define where the team is going and how the team will achieve the goals and
objective of the organisation. This will help Premier INN Hotel London to the large extent.

Characteristics – There are many unique characteristics which makes leader different from
manager such as -
Positive attitude – The first characteristics is its positive attitude as leader is the one who
always think in the positive situation even in the worst situation. And also has the ability to make
the attitude of every team member positive.
Ability to inspire – the second characteristic is that leader has the ability to inspire each
and every team member and also motivates and form commitment towards the goals and
objective. Leader personality is so inspiring that every one behave in positive manner and show
extra affection towards the organisation.
Manager – Manager is the person who is responsible for a part ODF the company or he is the
one who manage and control the organisation. Manager is the one who perform all the
managerial function and also assign duties to the subordinate and set targets in the business.
Manager is the one who monitor and control day to day activities and also perform its function in
every level of organisation (Sadatrasool, Bozorgi-Amiri and Yousefi-Babadi, 2016).
Role – Manager of Premier INN Hotel London has various role that are perform by them which
help the hotel to the large extent.
Daily operation – The primary role of manager is ensure the daily function of department
and also monitor and control the day to day activity in an effective manner. This will help
Premier INN Hotel London to the large extent.
Set Goals – The second role of manager is to set gaols in the Premier INN Hotel London
as it set both short and long term goals and ensure that the goals are achieve in the efficient
manner.
Characteristic – the characteristic of manager make him to work in the effective manner such as -
Time management – the key factor in being a successful manager is time management. It
helps to achieve all the goals in the organisation.
Communication – it is important to have effective communication skills as it help to
communicate with the team in the effective way and helps to increase the result.
M1 Differentiate between the role of leader and function of a manager
The role of leader is very different situational leadership theory as it perform very
flexible function and leader believe that there is no systematic way to solve any problem and take
the decision accordingly. On the other hand the function of manager in situational theory is to to

(Amanchukwu, , Stanley, and Ololube, 2015).

According to (Chen, 2015) the situational leadership style is the style which is depend
upon situation to situation and also it is very simple and easy to use style. On the other hand
According to (Podgórski, 2015) contingency leadership style is the style which claim that
there is no best way to organise the organisation or to take decisions. It is the most flexible style
and helps to increase the productivity of the Premier INN Hotel London.

P2 The role of leader and function of a manager in different situational contexts
The role of the leader and the function of manager in Premier INN Hotel London for the
improvement and changes in the operation of the company are varied depend on the leader and
manager. There are many situations in the organisation such as -
Stable Situation – it is the situation in which there are no changes in the future in which
the market is stable and no scope for in stable condition in the hotel. In this situation the role of
leader and the function of manger remain the same ion any given situation as there are no
changes and no drastic changes which affect the hotel. For example in the market there are no
changes arise including inflation, rescission, competition etc. and there are uniform condition
present in the market then it will not affect the hotel and situations are in control (Miner, 2015).
Slow to Moderate changes- These are the changes which are slow to moderate changes
which also affect the organisation to the large extent. For example Premier INN Hotel London
decides to change its organisational structure to flat structure to tall structure as the employees
are increasing so the board of directors decides to change its structure. So in this situation the
role of manger will be to motivate the employees to adopt the new structure and influence them
in the positive manner and shows them the positive aspects of the structure. On the other hand
the manager will coordinate and mange the employees to set in the new organisation structure
which help Premier INN Hotel London to the large extent (Anderson and et.al, 2017).
Fast changes- This are the changes in which rapidly changes in the organisation and also
influence the organisation. For example the pricing strategy of Premier INN Hotel London is
rapidly changes. And the organisation has adopt different strategy then the role of the leader is to

motivate the employees to work in the fluctuating situation. And the function of manager to
manage the time and monitor the employees that work are manages on time.
P3 Different Theories and Models
Situational Leadership – Situational leadership are the leadership which are develop by Kenneth
Blanchard and Paul Hersey. It refers to the leadership style in which the leader and the manger
are very flexible and adjust according to the development of the organisation or it depend upon
the situation to situation. In situational leadership style the leader continually changes to meet the
goals and objective of the organisation. It suggest that no single leadership style is best . It is
better to depend upon the situation and apply the strategy accordingly. It is believe that the most
effective leader are those who adjust according to situation or adopt their style to the situation
which help the organisation to achieve the goals and objective in the effective manner. As there
are four primary leadership style such as -
Telling – In this the leader people tell their work what to do and how to do in the proper
manner .
Selling – In this the leader crate the roles for other and also they shows positive response
and ready for the suggestions. As they sell their creative ideas to other.
Participating – In this the leader leave the decision making process to their followers and
make them feel that they are important.
Delegating – In this the leader provide guideline to the followers and help them to find
solution of the problems. And help the employees to the large extent.
System Leadership – System leadership style is the style which has been developed by Dr lan
MacDonald in which it enables the leaders in an organisation to create the conditions where
people at all levels can work productivity to their potential. It is consider as complex system in
which organisational functions are been carried out accordingly. It also provide tool which help
the leader to predict the human behaviour in their organisation. This leadership theory help
Premier INN Hotel London to the large extent. As it provide set of principles which need to be
follow in the given situation.
Contingency Leadership – it is the theory which states that there is no best way to organise a
corporation , or to make decision making and to lead the team in the systematic manner. In is the
style which applies their own style depending upon the right situation. It is the most flexible

increase the productivity of the organisation and also it help to increase the profit of the hotel.
And most important it help to utilize the resources in the effective manner (Antonakis, and Day,
eds., 2017).

P6 Factors within the business environment that impact operational management
There are many factors within the business environment that impact operational management
such as -
Economic factor – Economic factor impact the operational management of Premier INN
Hotel London as in 2008 financial crisis dropped the UK into recession it causes many
problems . So it is very important to have proper knowledge of the economic factor as it will
impact the operational management to the large extent .
Technological factor – This factors plays an important role as the increase use of
computer, internet and rise of social media and online marketing has lead to target more
audiences. So it help Premier INN Hotel London to take advantage of new technology.
Political factor – In this factor there is grater demand of political factor and influence the
organisation to the large extent. As by the corporation tax has decreased over the last few years
which has seen rise in profit. Also political factor causes negative impact if the policies are not in
favour of Premier INN Hotel London (Molchanov, 2016).
Social factor – As Premier INN Hotel London relies heavily on tourism , holidays such as
Christmas , New year , Easter etc. are all important dates by which Premier INN Hotel increase
more no . of profit .

impact . It is important to have proper knowledge of the factor and understand each and every
policies so that it doesn't hinders the business and its working.

According to (Storey, 2016) operational management helps the organisation as it monitor
the day to day working of the business and also it gives right direction to the business. On the
other hand according to (Gomez and et.al, 2015) there are many factor which impact on the
wider business environment as impact in the negative manner as there are many factor such as
political , economic , technological,social ,CSR , legal etc. which must be consider in taking all
the major decisions.

The above case study is base on operational management which helps to create and design the
management . In this study it has been concluded that roles of leader and function of manager. It
has also apply different situation and also applied various theories. It also articulated the key
approaches of operational management and also the value and importance of operational
management. And lastly it has been concluded the different factor within business environment
that impact upon operational management and decision making by leaders and managers
