INTRODUCTION
Operations management refers to that area of business where management focus on the
activities of designing and controlling the process of production of goods and services. This
process is responsible for ensuring that all the available resources are efficiently used in order to
meet the objective of business and customers on time (Alderton and Saieva, 2013). The role of
operational manager is to formulate and develop the strategies and tactics to ensure the smooth
implementation of operations within the organisation. The actions of operations management has
impact on the customer service, product and service quality, technological up-gradation and
profitability margins. The organisation chosen for this report is Barclays plc. Barclays plc is
multinational investment bank established in year 1690. Along with investment company is also
providing financial services and dealing in four type of businesses that are personal banking,
corporate banking, wealth management and investment management (Ahmadi, and Rezaei,
2020). The topic covered in this report are the different roles and characteristics of a leader and a
manager, role of a leader and the function of a manager in different situational contexts and
evaluate different theories and models of approach.
TASK1
P1 Different roles and characteristics of a leader and a manager.
Leader is that important asset in the business who has the ability to look at different
actions and how they can be improved and ensure that employees move towards the better
vision.
Role of leader
Strategist: Leader's role in organisation is to develop the plans and strategies for the
business operations and ensure the proper implementation of strateies and mointors the
work of its team member (Kato and NEC Corp, 2012). In context of Barclays plc leader
performs the role of outlining specific goals according to the prevailing situations and
guide the employees to achieve them.
Communication: Communication is very important for all organizational leaders as they
need to communicate their ideas and methods to the employees in order to make sure that
operations are carried in effective manner. In context of Barclays, leaders have
established good communication with the employees and their team members to ensure

fast functioning. They communicate day to day procedures and ensure proper
participation of its team members in meetings .
Characteristics of leader
A focused approach: Leader is one who is responsible for dealing with the specific
vision and its implementation (Burns, 2018). In context of Barclays plc, leaders stay
focused in the organisation to ensure the team work efficiently and effectively towards
the objectives. The has build and developed their team in such a manner that in the
absence of leader, the team is capable to carry operations in the effective way.
A decisive mind: Leaders are involve in decisions at every stage of business operations
and without their approval the operations are not carried away. In context of Barclays
leaders are always ready and move fast in providing judgement calls and opinion on
where to move next (Edward, and et. Al, 2020). They are responsible to make sure that
decisions taken should be correct and provide benefit to the team members and
organisation at large.
A manager is that part of company who is responsible for managing all the activities in
the company that is manages whole company. The primary function of manager is to exercises
managerial operations and has power to make changes in functioning activities.
Role of Manager
Interpersonal Roles: Interpersonal role is directly connected to the formal position of
manager in the organisation. In the context of Barclays plc, the manager is consider as the
front head for his team and unit that is stand as a representre of legal authority.
Informational Role: The role of manager in organisation is very important as
information is the lifeblood for the functioning of organisation. In context of Barclays
plc, manager direct the members through meetings, conversations and documentation.
The information is formulated to the subordinates on daily bases and subordinates are
responsible for further activities. Moreover, manager has formed the connect with
employees and approach them directly to know the process and make changers if
required (Chevalier and et.al., 2015).
Characteristics of Manager
Resolve conflicts: It is important and essential element element in the functioning of
business operations that manager should be a good mediator. If two or more members of

the team have issues then in those cases manager act as the mediator to solve the conflicts
and responsible for maintaining healthy working environment.
Effective listener: It is one of the effective characteristic of manager where they listen to
the employees and consider their view points especially during performance. As it is
important for managers to know the availability to staff and accordingly provide support
and listen to their points.

P2 Examine the role of a leader and the function of a manager in different situational context.
The role of a leader and the function of manager are different but the ultimate motive is
same for both that is accomplishment of organisational goals. The decision is taken by them after
identifying and evaluating the market tends and situations. The organisation face various
situations in operation of tasks such as fast, slow and stable. Following are the different
situations where role and function of leader and manager are applied differently-
Slow
The growth and development of the company Barclays plc is quite slow as the decisions
are made after taking lot of time which leads to delay in project completion. Thus, due to delay
in the actions the company suffered decrease in the profit margins which result in slow market
growth (Hoang, and et.al, 2020). Therefore, slow growth and development has negative impact
on the functioning of company.
Stable
The growth and development process of the Barclays plc is stable that is changes in the
stable market are moderate. The changes in the market trends do not effect the growth of
company at large as according to market changes they(Barclay plc) are capable of making quick
decisions. These market changes helps in identifying and analysing the market trends in right
manner which provide platform to the company to be one step ahead from the market conditions.
Fast
Fast growing market has a great impact on the business of Barclays that is the frequent
changes in market trends brings new trends and innovation in the functioning of business. Where
as these changes also have negative impact that is wrong decisions are taken which leads to delay
in implementation and tasks are not completed on time.

There are many changes which arise in the internal and external business environment.
The changes in the internal environment are made according to the existing external environment
such as changes in strategies, policies, controlling & monitoring, machinery, etc. Regulating and
controlling of these factors helps in earning profit shares and strengthening the position in
marketplace. Some of the changes in external environment are not controllable by the
company(Barclays plc) that is legal changes, social changes, political changes, etc. These
changes have positive impact on the operations of business that is it brings new opportunities for
the growth and development in an effective manner. These environmental factors are identified
and analysis by leaders and mangers and decisions are taken by them according to the prevailing
situations.
In context of Barclay's, the different type of leadership styles are being used in different
situations in order to complete the task and projects in an efficient way. Mainly company uses
supportive leadership style as with the help of this style leader provide support to the employees
which lead to completion of work in an efficient and effective way. The decisions are taken by
the managers according to the needs and capabilities of the employees so that objective of
Barclays plc can be accomplished. Manager and leader both give priority to employees and
according to the skills and specialization, the projects and task are assigned to get the desired
outcome.
P3 Explain different theories and models of approach.
Leaders provide great support to organisation by guiding and motivating the employees
according to their needs and desires. Moreover, leader identifies the changes that are taking place
in the external environment and accordingly formulates the strategies and take decisions so as to
provide benefit to company (Barclays plc) from these changes. There are different types of
leadership styles which are implemented according to the different conditions (Kamel, Rezk, and
Abdelkareem, 2020). The following styles are been implemented by Barclays plc in order to
maintain efficiency in the workplace.
Situational leadership: The situational leadership is the leadership style which are used
by leaders in allocating the work and activities to its team member according to their
skills and the prevailing situations. Leaders are responsible for identifying and analysing
the market conditions and according formulate the plans and decisions are taken in the
organisation. This theory helps in business by evaluating the conditions and finding out

the best solution in order to achieve the results on time. Moreover helps in facing the
challenges that are taking place in the business environment and provide support to
business operations in dealing with slow phase. According to the internal environment
that is rise in team issues, conflict in team members, etc members are shifted and team
are changed (Kim, and Choi, 2020). These small small steps taken by leader helps in
solving the conflicts and completing the tasks on time.
System leadership: The system leadership is that style which focuses on the end result
insight of the steps and process involve in reaching at that stage. Thus, this theory
consider the results that are being obtain by the operations and focus on meeting the
stable phase(situation). These operational activities are planned earlier and the obtained
results are compared with the desired results and accordingly corrective steps are taken.
Barclays plc is one of the biggest investment and financial company consist of many
different departments and each department follow different strategies to accomplish
their own set goals and objectives.
Contingent leadership: This leadership style consider the different situations that are
taking place in the organisation (Barclays plc). The problems privileging in the
company are identified by team members and solutions are being found out by them in
order to meet the desire goals. Moreover, this style is used in the company in order to
find out various paths to provide benefit to company in achieving its goals and
objectives and focus on directing company towards fast growing phase.

It is concluded from the above report that operation management is important within the
companies to manage effectiveness of work. Leaders and managers helps in improving
efficiency and effectiveness of organisation. Overall performance of the company can be
enhanced by analysing the needs and demands of all operations effectively. Leaders responsible
for taking effective decisions that can lead to manage different business operations. There are
different methods used within the companies for improving quality of operations such as lean
