INTRODUCTION
Management and operations are primarily concerned to manage and supervise all the
functions of management for the smooth working of the company. In other words, business
practices of the organizations are administered in order to generate higher level of efficiency at
the workplace.
Morrison Plc is one of the largest supermarket chain in the world, was started by William
Morrison in Bradford, England. It offers its customers several products for their consumption
(food, clothing) and entertainment (books, DVDs).
This report explains the concept and operational management in detail by discussing the roles of
a leader and manager in Morrisons with the different situational examples, different models and
theories of situational leadership and contingency and importance and value of operational
management in achieving companies objectives and assessing factors in the business
environment.
MAIN BODY
P1. Comparison in Roles of Manager and Leader.
Leaders in Morrison are the one who defines the vision of the company in Morrison, they
motivate and engage employees to work and turn his vision into reality. Leaders are the those
people in the company who think beyond what employee do within Morrison. There main
purpose is to their activate workforce to do something bigger, he/she believes that the with the
high functioning teams Morrison can acquire more efficiently (Mitra and
Karathanasopoulos,2019). Leaders are one who bring and embrace change in the organization
and also are very innovative and expect uniqueness in the company at every stage by creating
brand which differentiate it from its rivals. They keep on trying and experimenting new things
for the company's success and do not worry about the failed attempts. Because leaders define the
vision, they stay motivated and think towards achieving the long-term goal of the company.
Leaders in Morrison know their stakeholders and spend sometime with them to build the faith
and loyalty of them in Morrison and deliver them their promise.
Whereas
Managers are the people who focus on setting goal for the company, measuring the status of the
goal and tries their best with the teams to achieve that goal. Managers control circumstances to

reach or exceed their objectives. They are concise with the best practice which works and but do
refine the structure and process to make those practice better. Morrison manager's imitate
capabilities and behaviours and observe others and practice the leadership style. They strive to
achieve short-term goals and seek accolades on regular basis. Managers in Morrison work
constantly to make their skills perfect and adopt the open and proven behaviour. They frame
proper structure and set the specific goals and try their all possible way out to achieve their
objectives and goals (Sumets, 2018). They focus on logical and analytical issues to make sure
that the systems are working properly to achieve the expected and desired outcomes. They make
everyone work together and ensures individual are working correctly to achieve goals of the
company.
P2. Examples functions and roles of manager and leader in distinct situations.
Situational Examples- Conflicts – This is most basic example which occurs in almost every organizations like
Morrisons. In the situation of conflicts, the function of the manager is to know about the
problem and resolve the issue as the conflict affect the work and manager is the person
who looks over the completion of task. So there is any problem which delays the work is
to be solved by the manager at any cost. Change Management – Whenever there is change in management, the manager defines
the process of change and leader is the person who takes the decision regarding change
management as he feels that there is the utmost need of changes in the Morrison gets the
valuable feedback from its team regarding the changes and with the help of the manger
decides the key factors what should be restructured. Leaders also informs and
communicate in appropriate manner about the changes that will be happening in the
company in order to make the workforce more flexible so that they can tackle any
situation at the given point of time(Cui, 2020).
Training – Whenever the new candidate join the company, it is the role of the leader to
provide him with the sufficient training before his hands on the actual tasks and
familiarize him with everything that happens in the company so that when the employee

P3. Diverse Theories and models
Morrison is using different styles and leadership measures to make sure that there is a good
working which is present in the organization. The competition is increasing the company will
have to use these theories to be able to operate effectively.

Leaders of Morrison are experienced and knowledgeable therefore they are being able to
operate effectively. Styles which leaders are using in Morrison is very friendly but when the
changes come in the organization then styles changes which is going to make the performance
level of the employees be implemented. Right framework has to be used at the right time so that
there is going to be higher standard and recognition which Morrison can gain in the market
which would be good for the overall development of the company.
Systematic leadership
There has to be good systematic working which has to be present in the market of the
leaders and the workforce must be able to match the standards and expectations of the company.
Systematic leadership is going to get a higher sense of working and proper responsibilities for all
the workforce which is present in the company so that there is going to be higher operations
which are going to take place (Karlsson, 2016). There are a lot of problems which rise in the
company therefore it is important for the leaders to have a structured way of working so that the
changes in the company can come in easily.
Contingency leadership
There is not particular style of leadership which is going to be present in all the situation
therefore it is important for the organization to use the right measures and methods. Different
circumstances come up in the market in different times and leaders of Morrison are experienced
enough to make the right measures and functioning so that there is going to be higher
performance and standards which the company can have. In this theory a leader is going to be
effective in one situation but ineffective in the other situation which is not going to be good for
the development of the company in the market.

possible. The following discussed below are the approaches which are used by Morrisons: Business Process Redesign It is the business management technique that focuses on
evaluating the and designing employees and workforce and the process within the
Morrison. The basic goal of the behind doing the BPR is to help company is restructure
Morrison from the ground level. The role of the manager is to achieve the quantum
performance that to with attaining the objective set. The role of leader in this process is to
focus on acquiring the change in the organization by acquiring the technology and
making the company adapt it. Six Sigma – It is the key technique that determines the quality-control. This approach was
developed and adopted by the company so that they complete the work faster and with
only fewer chances of errors (Orlova, 2019). This technique is focused to meet the
customer requirements and improve the Morrison customer retention. In Morrison, the
role of leader is to ensure that the employees working are motivated to complete the task
as by being motivated there is reduce chances of errors and manager in this technique
ensures that only the skilled and interested people are involved in these team of quality
control.
Lean Manufacturing – It is the systematic approach which works for eliminating the
waste that happens while manufacturing. This theory emphasis about the waste that is
created from uneven workloads. Leader in this approach takes care that the resources are
wasted by employees and eliminate expenditure as manager monitors all the activities
related to this.

Operation management is a process where the managers and leaders can effectively manage,
control and monitor the goods and services, create the plans for manufacturing the products and
service delivery (Slack, Chambers and Johnston, 2010). The managers and leaders of
“Morrisons” industries taking care of the development , design, manufacturing , promoting,

selling of their product so that they can build their brand name. Some of the key benefits or
importance of an effective operation management are as -
Product Quality- Through operation management the company ensure the quality of the product
and the service they are providing to the customers. As the product quality can be measure with
two aspects i.e., reliability and durability which means the company Morrisons make sure the
quality of the product is being trustworthy and the ability of a product to remain functional
without maintenance so that the customers can rely on.
Order capture- The Retailers focus towards the demand of the customers so that they can
develop their business and increase the market share. Morrisons fulfil the demands of their
customers as the trends are changes on daily routine the company produce the goods as per the
changes occurred and determine the accurate demand of the customers.
Customer Satisfaction- The Morrisons provide a appropriate product to the customer and ensure
the need of the customers to to fulfil by them and provide better service so that the customers are
satisfy and the company operates good management.
Revenue Increase- Morrisons operates a good quality of product with that the customers are

Morrisons is to produce high production and should not conflict with the corporate objective.
Finance- The operating managers and leaders take decision to involve significant investment
cost. This factor having an impact towards the operation management as the financial position of
the business directly affected to the choices available.
External factors influences the operation management-
Economic Environment- The changes in demand having an impact towards the firm on capacity
usage and in manufacturing the product (Lesjak and Vehovar, 2005). The operational managers
observe the changes in interest rate and this having an impact on the cost of financing capital
investment. The business must pay attention towards the income.
Technology Environment- This factor having an huge impact while operating a business. The
business facing an problem with changing technologies which are difficult for them to utilise the
techniques. The managers need to observe the changes in technology and formulate a strategy so
that they can adopt a higher market share.
CONCLUSION
It can be concluded from the above report that there are different roles of leader and the
functions of managers and how that roles and functions are applied in different situations by
adopting the theories and models which include situational, systems and contingency leadership
and take appropriate decision to improve the efficiency of operational management by
identifying the importance and values of a operation management to successfully complete the
objective of business and define the factors that are impacting upon the management and
decision-making by leaders and managers to analysing the business environment.
