1MANAGEMENT PRACTICE AND THEORY
The term effectiveness denotes the degree of success of something to achieve the
desired goal. The management of an organisation set the goals and objective for more
significant achievements. The effectiveness of an organisation depends on these objectives
and to what extent they address the needs and demands of target consumers. The health care
industry is a complicated sector as it has several purposes in its context. This is the sectors
that have the requirement of the most skilful employees who have the utmost aim of serving
their patients.
Recently I got a chance to be associated with the Royal Melbourne Hospital for my
professional need. This organisation is located in Victoria, Australia and have two branches
in the city. This organisation is devoted to serving the patients at their level best. The scope
of the operations in the hospital varies from patient care, medical care to research in medical
science. This hospital has a well-developed infrastructure, which is one of the most important
aspects of these sectors. What I observed in this hospital is that the doctors and other staffs
here are quite disciplined and skilled. The ICU department of any hospital is the place where
critical are offered. The doctors of this hospital have achieved several awards for their
services and educational qualifications.
The effectiveness of this hospital lies in its patient care services (Lenthall et al. 2018).
For me, the root objective of any hospital should be their sincere and quality health care. The
professional of this hospital are skilled and served their purpose on time — fast services and
availability of care increase the effectiveness of this hospital.
The definition and criteria of effectiveness could be different for different
stakeholders. If we take the example of the owner, the hospital could gain effectiveness if the
profit number is satisfactory. Profits in the health care business depend on the quality of care
that is provided to the patients. Their brand name would build depending on the

infrastructure, environment, service and behaviour of the professional. Therefore, the owner
would put more importance in these aspects of the business to gain more profits. Again for
the customers, fast and quality service is the yardstick of effectiveness (Brakenridge et al.
2016). The consumers in this sector are the patients and their relatives who visit it for health
care. How fast the hospital is providing the services and how that is working for the well-
being of the patient is the criteria of effectiveness for the customers.
The Royal Melbourne hospital has been in the news several times for both good and
bad reasons. There are researches schemes going on in the hospital for the development of
medical sciences. As I have a chance to visit this organisation, I have experienced some
aspects of this hospital personally (Sharif & Zainuddin, 2017). Generally, hospitals are a busy
place. These organisations are known for extensive work pressure and extended work hours.
The Royal Melbourne Hospital is no exception in it. The number of patients is high, and
those get higher during some holidays, natural calamities or accidents in the town. The
healthcare professionals are devoted to their duty of serving the people at their level best
(Haigh et al. 2015). Other than the regular days, they also have to work extra hours if there
are some big and sudden emergency cases. The hospital topped in Australia
The interesting fact about the hospital is that it gives good importance to the
inventions in medical science. This hospital had won several awards for its contribution to
research works. Generally, management in health care sectors does not show much interest in
medical researches as they are expensive and time taking. This hospital in Australia do not
solely concentrate on business making but also contributes to the development of medicines
and preventive methods.
My conception of hospital staff dedication towards the patients and their family has
quite changed and evolved after I witnessed the services of Royal Melbourne Hospital. The

staffs of this hospital have to work for extra hours that is quite stressful. This is the common
scenario of the health care sector. The hospital management is concerned and well-informed
about this. Often it is thought that hospitals pay handsome money to their employees, but it is
also the fact that the nature of the job is quite tough and strenuous (Brunetto et al. 2015).
Therefore, the money paid in this sector is worthy.
The hospital is well-equipped with new and trendy machines. One cannot get the idea
of the advancement of medical science if they do not know the effectiveness of these types of
machinery. In my opinion, the types of machinery not only have cut short the treatment time
=, but they are at the same time live savers. Another important thing is the attitude and
behaviour of the doctors in this hospital. Usually, doctors are considered to be rude and short-
tempered. I have a completely different experience in this hospital (Redman & Maples,
2017). The doctors are friendly, and they treat really well the families and the patients.
Effectiveness of an organisation is a matter that could have a different meaning to people
according to their role and interest in that organisation. Stakeholders of a hospital could have
different criteria for assessing the effectiveness. I think some of the time; the perspectives
clash with each other. For the customers, the price of a service is a criterion of effectiveness.
They would like to get the best service at the lowest price. Whereas, the owners, shareholders
and authorities would like to gain the utmost profit from a venture. There has to be a balance
in terms of their interest. The organisation that would be able to manage this contrasts could
establish itself as a highly effective organisation. Likewise, the effectiveness of the hospital
like Royal Melbourne lies in that fact that it provides world class health care services to its
customers. At the same time, it is doing its share in research and invention. This is gaining
profit to the owners of the hospital and also satisfying the patients.
