Personal reflection through Gibb’s reflection cycle
Step 1: Description
As a Nursing student studying under XYZ University I was working on a general ward
while on a placement during my 3rd year. My mentor had asked me too research on a drug on
which I was unsure about. While I was researching on the drug, I had been requested by
healthcare assistance to assist him to deal with a patient who was lying on a soiled bed. I decided
to help him as the priority since researching on the specific drug was for my own learning as well
as knowledge development as well as not that urgent. After helping the healthcare assistant I
revived to my work of researching. Soon my mentor came and asked me if I completed
researching on the specific drug or not. When I stated the scenario to him, he suggested me that I
need to improve my own time management to be an efficient healthcare professional.
Step 2: feelings
Initially, I got perplexed and the whole situation left me questioning whether the need of
the patient should be my priority or my own professional learning should be given more
importance to during that point of time (Wu et al., 2015). I felt annoyed with myself due to the
fact that I was unable to express my opinion in front of my mentor. However the fact that I need
to learn more about the drugs that are unknown to me in order to enhance my knowledge so that
i can provide effective care to the patient in future also had striked me.
Step 3: Evaluation
As a result of this confusion, I decided to research on the concept of time management in
order to obtain a vivid knowledge of how to develop the same. I also decided to research on

whether my action of selecting the patient concern over my personal learning is justified or not.
After researching, I selected assisting the healthcare assistant who needed help from me for the
cleanliness and comfort of the patient in the mentioned scenario. As per NMC (2008A), an
healthcare professional may make the care of healthcare service users to be their first priority,
along with treating the individuals with respect and dignity (Cherry & Jacob, 2016). However, I
also understood the perspective from which my mentor had explained the importance of
researching the drug. As a registered nurse, It is highly crucial for me to know the usage of
different drugs. I eventually realized that , in the given scenario, I should have helped the
healthcare assistant and then quickly return to my work s that both the task could be done within
the stipulated time.
Step 4: Analysis
The concept of time management is highly crucial in each and every profession including
the profession of nursing. According to Lúanaigh, (2015), the importance of the time spent by a
nurse with the patient completely depend upon his or her time management. Considering the fact
that the nursing profession involves a good variety of tasks to be handled within a very limited
amount of time, it is highly crucial for the nursing students to develop the skill of multitasking.
This skill can only be developed by developing the skill of time management. Time management
is found to go hand in hand with efficient priotization skill, effective decision making of
priorities and planning the tasks to be done keeping accordance to the stipulated time as well as
the priority (Wu et al., 2015). According to researchers, effective time management skill has the
potential to reduce stress in both professional as well as personal life and enhance the
productivity of an individual.

Step 5: Conclusion
From the above discussion, it can be concluded that I need to develop effective time
management skill in order to fulfil the purposes of my professional life. Time management can
be considered as a dynamic process that tends to go hand in hand with effective prioritising skills
(Fong, 2016). Lack of the later will result in wasting valuable time, this in turn has the potential
to increase the stress level of an individual along with his or her fellow team members.
Step 6: Action plan
In order to enhance my time management skill, I will perform the following acts.
1. I will break down my day in order to find out how long it will take for performing certain
tasks.
2. I will write down the list of work on the basis of the priority and cross of each task after it
has been completed.
3. I will delegate tasks to other members of the team where necessary.
