Introduction
The purpose of this report will be to identify, discuss as well as evaluate a range of
selected management theories and concepts from management that the managers as well as
the organizations can use for future purposes to operate the business operations effectively
and efficiently. All these will help the managers to take prompt decisions so that it will help
to perform the business operations smoothly, so that the operations of the business can
perform well in the marketplace in the industry, and can take prompt decisions.
Role of the Manager
According to the case study, Frank Piechowski is a middle manager. A middle
manager can only get the instructions from the senior level managers like the Vice-President
in this case. It is the characteristic of the middle level managers to be accountable to the top
management and also become responsible to lead the lower level managers. They form a
pivotal role in the management level to convey the message between the top and lower level
management of an organization. The middle level managers can include the general
managers, branch managers, and department managers as well. They are answerable to the
top level management for performing functions to run the business operations. The middle
level managers spend more time to the functions performed in the organizational as well as
directional functions than the upper level management. The role of the middle level managers
need to execute the plans of the organizations according to the policies and plans as well as
objectives of that organization. They also help to define and discuss the information and
policies conveyed by the top management to the lower level management. Like in this case,
Frank Piechowski, the plant manager for a plant, has received instructions from the vice-
president that the plant need to hire 40 other workers on temporary basis through the help
from Cities Staffing, the local labor agency. The company is trying their level best to survive

and run the business operations in this highly competitive as well as mature industry (Too &
Weaver, 2014). The companies who deal in the appliances mainly compete in the market on
the factor of price. He is relying on the workers who will join the organization on temporary
basis in order to keep the labor costs low as much as possible, rather than increasing the
designation of the permanent employees. To inspire as well as guiding the people who would
be hired, like the Somali people in this case, as well as to the lower level managers and
helping them to improve their performances and to accomplish the objectives of the business
operations is one of the major role of the middle level managers, like Frank Piechowski I this
case study. They can communicate some suggestions as well as feedbacks to the top level
management, as the middle level managers are more engaged in the day-to-day operations of
an organization, where they can supply priceless information to the top level management,
that will help them to develop the overall performance of the organization by the help of a
larger and more strategic view (Farrokh, Kordnaeij & Zali, 2016).
Impact of External Organizational Environment
The external factors have a huge impact on the organizations, mainly to those
companies who run their business operations in other countries apart from their home
countries. The external factors help to shape the business operations as well as to frame the
plans and policies of the organization, which will help them to run the business operation in
the countries where they are performing. Like in this case study, the social factors play an
important part in the appliance manufacturing company. Though they are few in numbers, but
they have an impact on the operations of the manufacturing plant due to their hard-working
and responsible nature, and also to agree to work for the wages that Frank Piechowski are
ready to pay to them. He has established a healthy working relationship with the Somali
people, from whom he wants to hire the people to work in the manufacturing plant. The
cultural aspects also play an important part in the working environment of the organization

(Zaman, Afridi & Saleem, 2013). And according to that, Frank Piechowski has changed the
men of the cafeteria of the manufacturing plant just to help the Somali workers so that they
can have more options in the food menu in order to adapt the restrictions inn their diet cart.
He also allowed the women workers to wear the traditional clothes as long as they are not
violating the safety standards of the manufacturing plant. Frank Piechowski also set a
separate room, so that the Muslim workers can perform their ceremonial washing and prayers
that is required to do five times in a day during the working hours. They need to perform 15-
minute rituals during the break time and at the time of sunset. But it can hamper the workflow
of the organizations. So it can be said that the socio-cultural values of the people, like the
Somali people in this case, had a huge impact in the working environment of the people. Also
the wage on which they are willing to work is another socio-cultural factor that played an
important factor in the working atmosphere of the manufacturing plant. Frank Piechowski has
valued the beliefs and assumptions of the Somali workers, which has helped him to convince
Halima Adan, the main spokesperson of the Somali people, with whom he had a healthy
working relationship to work with. The Islamic religious practices inseparably interlinked
with the everyday life of the people. The economic factor also plays an integral part in the
environment of the working conditions of the manufacturing plant in this case study. The
wages paid by the Frank Piechowski to the Somali workers and making them happy is also a
factor which helps the appliance manufacturing company to sustain in the industry (Shah et
al, 2013).
Fayol’s Management Functions
Henri Fayol was the first person to classify the activities of the managers into specific
functions. He was also considered to be the founding father of the classical management
theory at the start of the last century. Apart of setting out 14 general principles of
management, he also described the 5 core functions of management. They are forecasting,

planning, organizing, commanding and controlling. According to the case study, the 2
management principles which is followed in this alliance manufacturing company are
controlling and organizing (Nhema, 2015). Organizing is the usage of the plan and
procedures to bring together the financial, physical and other available resources and using
them accordingly to achieve the aim of the organization. In this case study, from hiring the 40
odd Somali workers from their society, paying the amount of wages according to the norms
and standards of the organization, and setting up a completely different room only for them to
use for the purpose of washing and prayers is a commendable task. Being a middle level
manager, he has to perform all these on behalf of the organizing body and also for the senior
level management, who has instructed him to hire them. Frank Piechowski have to use the
information available about the requirement by the manufacturing plant and use them
accordingly to hire the labor force while arranging them and structuring their wages and other
benefits to be received from the appliance manufacturing plant (Uzuegbu & Nnadozie, 2015).
He has also paid much attention to the basic requirements of the Somali people and
respecting their values, so that it will help to the business operation of the firm both
efficiently and effectively. He also allowed the women workers to wear the traditional clothes
as long as they are not violating the safety standards of the manufacturing plant. Coming to
the controlling part, it can be termed as the final function of the management. This function
helps to assure the other four functions to be followed correctly as well as to push the
company towards its aims and objectives. In this case study, Frank Piechowski has to control
the Somali workers who are hired in the manufacturing plant on temporary basis. From
providing the wages to setting up a different room used only for washing and prayers by
those people, the middle level manager has beautifully controlled the people as well as giving
proper value to the beliefs and assumptions of the workers from Somali. This also helps to
run the business operations efficiently (Parker, 2016).

Recommendations
Apart from all the organizing and controlling part, the policy of Frank Piechowski
need to be rectified a little, as the number of people will increase who will leave the line for
prayers will increase after the inclusion of the 40 Somali people. It will hamper the workforce
of the plant and things need to be changed, but the risk should be calculated before and
proper plans, so that it will not divide the workforce and will not have any adverse effect on
the workforce on the plant (Karande & Kalbande, 2015).
Conclusion
From the above report, it can be concluded that proper management skills are
necessary in handling the operations of an organization, in any kind of industry. It will be
beneficial for the organization and will help them to perform the business operations to run
effectively as well as efficiently.
